Hello to all the new followers!

Just so you know!  This is a sideblog, so unfortunately Bucky can’t follow you back directly, but you will see a follow from my main @specialagentace - who is a SHIELD OC and open to new interactions.

This is a low-activity blog at the moment as I try to get back into the saddle of writing/RP. I’m living my best ADHD life and the stress of living in this *gestures at the world*   whatever the hell is going on right now... has my swiss cheese memory more full of holes than ever. 

FYI:  I don’t drop threads (on purpose).  If there’s something that we’ve gotten started and you haven’t seen any activity in a while, please feel free to give me a nudge!! You aren’t bothering me, I promise! The ‘Out of sight - Out of Mind’ is STRONG in this one. 

I also enjoy talking with my followers/mutuals and making new friends. Even if you don’t want to RP - I’m open to just saying HI!

Sterling tilted his head as he watched his charge practice alone. They'd been trying out a new move but there was just no substitute for testing on a live guinea pig. He stepped forward, the clicking of his dress shoes echoing slightly in the wide space.

"Want to try that on a person? I know I look like an accountant and I'm not invincible but I don't break easy."

Without even waiting for confirmation, he began shrugging off his suit jacket and unfastening the buttons of his sleeves.

James Buchanan Barnes wiped the sweat dripping from his forehead with a towel he'd wrapped around the forearm of his prosthetic vibranium limb and stepped away from the dummy he'd been practicing on. He grabbed one of several large sports bottles and took a deep swig, before setting it back down and dropping into a seat next to where he'd thrown down his gym bag. "I think they might take issue with the death of their newest Handler so soon after he started." James offered Sterling a wry smile, but kept his eyes locked on the 'accountant's frame. Assessing. Mapping out the way he moved. Stockpiling information and filing it away for later. Old habits died hard.

The agent scoffed playfully.

"Death seems a bit harsh. Full body cast and a five year coma, maybe." He grinned, striding up to the much older man, hands now shoved in the pockets of his dress pants after he was done talking with them. He was so used to signing with Clint that even when he wasn't signing his hands stayed fairly animated while his mouth was moving.

"One weird thing about me is I like to spar with people way out of my league. It's how I learn. I will never turn down an opportunity to get my ass handed to me. Now, if you'd rather not, that's fine, but I would love to be able to tell people I got beat up by a 100 year old man."

Sterling, as a handler, seemed much more personable than he was as a department head. He not only cared about the mission getting done but the physical and mental health of his agents. He cared. Part of that was learning their humor. How they coped. Trying to seem a little more playful.

The interaction almost made him feel like his old self. Before Merc.

James had heard a lot about Agent Sterling. Some good, some bad - but he'd heard glowing reviews from one of the few people on the planet (or off of it for that matter) he trusted implicitly with character judgement.

Natasha had been trained since she was a child to read people. To analyze them and use their weaknesses against them. If she said the man in his pristine suit and tie was more dangerous than he looked, James trusted her word on that.

It wasn't just her word that piqued his interest, though. Sterling moved with a confidence that most people lacked. The 'accountant' had switched gears visibly and James could 'see' the training he'd done under Romanoff in the way he moved. Sterling wasn't anywhere near the cat-like prowl of the trained assassin, but James could see the body-awareness and the distinct traces of the kind of grace only one person in the world possessed. James knew her better than anyone else - and she knew James. Which meant there was a very high likelihood that whether the man in front of him knew it or not, he'd been trained in techniques that were detrimental to James' well-being.

There wasn't going to be any taking this man lightly, but James already knew that from the encounter that put them in this Handler-Asset situation in the first place.

"You sure you want to ruin your duds?" James gestured at the crisply ironed dress shirt, the pants with the perfect break at the ankle and straight fold-lines. "I'm sure your dry-cleaner has you on a watch list."

"I might be a little old fashioned, but - text them?" He suggested, waving off the gratitude. "Last thing both of us need is S.H.I.E.L.D. knocking down the door."

Bucky leaned back against the couch for a moment, contemplating his next move. He knew the kind of exhaustion his companion was feeling a little all too well. It reached every nook and cranny of your being. Every cell.

Well.. He would save Sterling the hassle of dragging himself off the couch to check if the bedroom door. "Well, there's no way I can leave without meeting Stella... mind if I check the bedroom door?" Bucky half-hoped it would prompt the man melting into the sofa to stagger torward an actual bed.

"That's the least old fashioned advice you could have given me." Sterling chuckled half heartedly. "SHIELD knocking down the door would be a pretty fitting end to the night for me, to be honest. But yeah, you're right." He pulled out his phone to text his friends but when Bucky suddenly got up to find Stella he felt compelled to his feet. He left the phone on the couch and got to his feet to follow the man.

He didn't know why he felt such urgency in following Bucky. It wasn't as though his bedroom was messy and he was embarrassed for someone to see it.

Perhaps he just didn't want to be alone.

"She's a Devon Rex. They're supposed to be pretty hypoallergenic. My sister was allergic." He explained as they reached the bedroom door. When it was opened they discovered the slender creature with large ears and an almost nude appearance to her short white fur curled up on his bed. She stretched and got up with a little chirp as the two men entered the room.

"Probably didn't even realize I was gone. What a nut." He grinned.

Bucky tensed for a moment when Sterling jumped to his feet. He'd meant to save the man the trouble of getting up off the couch - but that hadn't seemed to go to plan at all.

He was quite suddenly standing remarkably close to Sterling, in his bedroom and had only enough time to feel awkward about it for a moment when the slinky, graceful movement of a feline caught his attention and made him forget everything. She was beautiful - a slender goddess draped in the most chiffon-soft coat of fur.

"She's beautiful.." He felt the warmth in his voice touch his cheeks. Just a little. He could crush a car with his bare hands, but a cat could melt him to a puddle. "Stella is a very suiting name for a very regal lady." He spoke to her - half aware of Sterling still standing there. He let her come to him, if she so deigned. But also, this was Sterling's bedroom and he'd just sort of invited himself in - he didn't want to breach that privacy any further by just trodding on in there.

Bucky: How could we possibly get into this much trouble in one day?

Yelena: It didn't take us the whole day.

Bucky's eyes scanned the room again. Sterling's words, for a moment, turned his thoughts dark. Had he just given a ride to someone who'd locked a person in a bedroom? Why would He be looking under the couch for them..?

It struck him a moment later.

It wasn't that he'd missed the cat tree. The toys. The food bowls and other obvious signs of a feline resident - it was just that he hadn't registered them as important. He cleared his throat and tried not to think about what color his face might be turning in the moment.

He sank down into the cushions a bit more heavily than he intended. Where had the days when he had been the playboy and all-around heart-throb gone? They seemed impossibly distant, anymore. He was just a big ball of awkward, now. Sam's words. Not his.

"Uh.. black. I take mine black, thank you. " He hesitated. "Stella?"

Sterling filed that away for later. You never know when you need to bring someone a cup of coffee just like they like it for a pick me up or a peace offering.

He picked his head up curiously as Bucky said the name.

"Oh! My cat! She should be around here somewhere." His heart no longer seemed in trying to find her. From the moment he had sat down on that couch the exhaustion settled there as well. He leaned back against the cushion, rubbing his face with his hands again. "Thank you. Again. For the ride. I'm kind of all over the place tonight. I didn't even tell anyone goodbye at the bar. I just... left." He loved that his friends were worried about him and checking on him but he hated the way it made him feel babied and small. It was something he needed to work on.

Concern didn't mean people thought he was weak.
