Whatâs up with âe.g.â and âi.e.â?
There are four important points to clear up regarding e.g. and i.e.
They are not the same thing, nor can they be used interchangeably.
You should never add âetc.â after either one.
They donât need to be italicized.Â
You should put a comma after e.g. and i.e.
In case youâre wondering, e.g. is short for exempli gratia, and i.e. is short for id est. Theyâre both from Latin.
