Before episode eight premieres tonight and advances the story and characters in whatever way, I had a question for The Amazing Digital Circus fandom. Specifically for those who believe Jax will get some kind of redemption and/or improve himself as a person.
Why do you think that? What in the show leads you to believe Jax will get some kind of positive character development in these final two episodes?
Because to me, it seems like the opposite is happening. I see Jax adamantly refusing to change his ways and clinging to his self-destructive coping mechanisms, and nothing about the show (particularly episodes six and seven) suggets to me that Jax will or wants to change for the better.
But at the same time, I do acknowledge I might be biased since I'm more sympathetic towards Jax’s victims than I am to Jax himself, which might be clouding my judgment. And to be clear, I'm not here to attack anyone for their opinions or try to change anyone's minds. I genuinely want to hear from people who think Jax will be redeemed to see what I might be missing.
I can only speak for myself, but I think it is the fact that Jax is so deeply unhappy.
It has been shown that although he thinks poking people and watching their reactions is entertaining, he genuinly wants connection. Love, if you will. He needs people, even though he tries to not care - because, as you know, if you love someone you will inevitable be hurt. It leaves you vulnerable. (But: What is life without love but hell?)
Jax is very, very scared. He probably has been hurt too many times, lost too many people, or just doesn‘t trust them not to kick him if he ever shows weakness.
(Which I honestly can’t blame him for. Ragatha has told him straight up that she, like, hates him and is only nice to him because she doesn’t like conflict. Zooble is just as mean to Jax as he is to them - if not more, because the watermelon scene was malicious, in my opinion. And also behind his back. Personally, I‘d rather you attack me up front than resent me silently until I have turned my back and then push me. It’s also the problem I have with Gangle: She literally wimpers and doesn’t show any backbone, but gives Jax over to Caine for “training“ (which was basically torture) and puts him in that maid outfit (which was extremely humiliating, as those maid outfits are often sexualized. She could have almost just as well have stripped him naked or put him in lingerie).
I think those are his victims you refer to?
Jax does pretty well if you just defend your boundaries (e.g. Pomni) or if you don’t care much (e.g. Kinger). Which I suppose is harder for some people than others, so I‘m sorry if I sound insensitive.)
So! Do I think Jax is a jerk? Yeah. Do I think he is a horrible, irredeemable demon who should die in a ditch? No. Even bullys and jerks are human and therefore worthy of love. Don’t forget that, please.
I don’t know if the show will end well for him. I don’t even know if the show will end well at all.
But I know we still have two episodes left, and Jax is in conflict. He is purple (red + blue) for a reason: If the problem is solved or ends in a catastrophy remains to be seen, but both are on the table.
He is still refusing to change his ways, yes - but we have already been shown that he struggles. He has been bullying much less in the later episodes - as I said, he thinks people are interesting. They entertain him. Keep him from abstracting. I don’t think he wants to actually hurt them.
But he needs to let them in. Trust them. And they need to try and be there for him too. Because without love no one in this show has a reason to live on.
And if the show ends with betraying Kinger’s “the worst thing you can do is make someone think they are not loved“ I don’t want it. And I don’t think they will do it.
What I think could happen is a sacrifice - as the show is based on I have no mouth and I must scream, where the paranoid jerk is the one to sacrifice his death for the others. He is the only one left with the cruel AM. That can either be Jax (would fit best with his character and also solve the problem if he can’t go back to the real world) or Kinger (because as a creator he bears that responsibility) - or it ends with Pomni (as the one character without a strict parallel) causing another chain of events to happen. Butterfly effect and all that.
Conclusion (because I tend to ramble a lot):
Jax is a very complex charachter and I think it would cheapen him and the story if he either suddenly plays nice with everyone or just falls back into his “cartoon bully“ persona. I think he will play a central role in the resolution (if Caine doesn’t crash the Circus before that), and his backstory will be the deciding factor if he can have a future (outside or not) or will end in absolute tragedy.
Whelp. I don’t know if that was in the least helpful, but those are my thoughts! ^^
It's insane to me so many people believe it that it was really just Caine's game all along. To me it obvious it wasn't. Of course the AI is gonna say he planned everything when you press the "continue game" button.
So, like, spoilers, I guess. Also very incoherent.
I must confess: I didn‘t suspect that it was fake. I should have, with how Abel was weirdly interested in Caine‘s wellbeing and with how the pacing felt off. It was too sudden, too much, too little exposition.
Also, Abel was so human. He felt sorry for Caine. His beef with Kinger. “Make the right choice“. Two times. That intonation. Are we sure the mannequin at the end was the same one? Are we sure it won‘t come back? It could very well be an NPC - but an old one. It was too smart. Or too good. Or I‘m compensating and paranoid. Anyway.
It‘s interesting that Jax had flashbacks of a road at night. Was he in a car crash? Did he run from home? If no one is waiting for him, something happened.
Also: WHAT were those hands in Jax‘ room?!? I‘ll have nightmares. Wah. Anyone notice it resembled a child‘s bedroom? He couldn’t be that young, though, someone would have noticed.
But I‘m so glad Jax crashed out at the end.
I was very scared he‘d lose his mind and - more importantly - hope. The whole episode, he was panicky and just so lost. Like he didn‘t care anymore. Depressed = abstraction, right?
I prefer the anger. It proves there is still some kind of fighting spirit left. He hasn‘t given up.
Probably applies to the rest of the cast as well - they’ve been reminded of the real world. Of the abstractions. That it is wrong to be trapped. That they should fight it.
Hope dies last. This adventure has hopefully (heh) awakened it: They‘ve gotten a few answers, that lead to more questions. They know they need to talk to Kinger, they know they need to find out more about Caine, the Circus, the circumstances that led them there.
They need to talk about abstraction.
(I‘m actually surprised they have not talked more. Stuck and trapped, but with other people as company? How can they not care! Why don‘t they try? Yeah, they all have issues, but still.)
Sooo… anyone notice how we‘re getting Pilot Alastor back?
The „I want to watch the scum of the world struggle to climb up the hill of betterment - Only to repeatedly trip, and tumble down to the fiery pit of failure!“ one? Bc that’s what Vox is doing, isn‘t he? Attempting an impossible endeavour?
