In a nutshell… The majority of my adult life was spent in relationships. I surmise the cause of this was simply because “i ain’t had no daddy around when i was growing up!” (TEAIRRA MARI)…AKA growing up in a fatherless household. It wasn’t until I was in my early 30’s (single mom, divorced and recently out of [go figure] a relationship) that I realized I needed a break from the mens’s….well from relationships at least.
While I thoroughly enjoyed the single life, there were many, many….mantee tales I shared with friends who were thoroughly humored by my plight as well as intrigued by my short luscious journey’s through Cougarville.
Once during one of these conversations with a good friend we’ll call Howard…through his hearty laughter, proclaimed “you’re a cold piece of work!” Now this wasn’t the first time I heard these words… especially from a man. Usually I’d hear it from a future fall off, and it’d go a lil something like thiiiiiiiis…
YoungThang: Ummmm…. I think we need to be monogamous
Young Thang: Yeah… I want it to just be you and me… I wanna be in a relationship with you
Me: Oh no darling, that wouldn’t be fair to you. I’ve experienced life, marriage, I have a child and have been in several relationships… You’re only 23, in school, & need to sow your oats… I don’t want to hold you back… it’s not you, it’s me
Young Thang: Yeah…whatever man
Me: So can I still come to the dorm tonight?
In hindsight THAT was some cold shit….but he was trying to play me. I’ll delve into that story at a later time…but what does a 30 something single mother say to some isn like that?
