Hi! I’m a POC writer but I don’t necessarily write fics with a POC main character. I always try to write as though it can be anyone because as a POC myself I know how important representation is. Would I qualify to be on your directory? Or in a list of POC blogs?

We'll absolutely include you as a writer in the directory. We'd like to highlight stories that have POC characters as the main or side character and reader-insert stories don't always fall into this category. But this is also a space for POC writers, so we'll be happy to include you if you submit yourself as an author.

Diversity and representation is something that has changed a lot over the years, which thankfully is on it’s way to being for the better. Obviously there are still many cases where it is far from equal, far from the justice and recognition that people truly deserve, but showing support and encouragement is something we can do to help get to that point in the mean time. Whether it’s through physical things in the outside world we can do or sharing posts online to help raise awareness, there are always numerous things we can do to help.

In the world of fanfiction, the support and diversity has continued to grow more and more over the years, which is absolutely fantastic to see. And here, in this list, I’m here to showcase all those wonderful fics who have a leading lady that is not your typical white character. This time last year, this list would’ve been half the size, so it’s bloody great just how much representation there is these days, though, as always, it can always be better. Make sure you let the authors know what you think of their stories, whether through a review, an ask or a message, because even the slightest bit of feedback can go a long way. Enjoy x

hey @1dffpocdirectory !! sorry for the weird message via reblog but i couldn’t message you and links via ask are confusing but i thought this list i made a couple of years ago on my old blog would help with the directory you’re making since there’s a bunch of new and old ones linked and ready to be added all in one location. however, some of these i think were on 1dff only so not all will be able to be added from tumblr. hope it helps!

Welcome to the 1DFF POC Directory!

Hello all! We’re incredibly excited to be launching the official hub for POC writers in the One Direction Fanfiction community. We hope to be a resource for writers of color and writers who wish to include characters of color in their fics. For those stories that aren’t told, for those characters that aren’t represented as often--we want to be a space of encouragement and inclusivity for all.

Some of our features will include...

A directory of fics written by authors of color and/or featuring OCs of color.

Quote of the Month: we will accept submissions for your favorite quotes!

Monthly Author Spotlights: we hope to host interviews with authors of color to talk about their process, their reasons for writing their particular story, and what diversity and representation mean to them.

Monthly Wrap-Ups: a comprehensive list of updated/new POC fics each month.

Resource Nights: we hope to spend some time reblogging and posting helpful links about writing diverse and underrepresented characters in fiction.

We can’t wait to build upon the great strides that have been made in encouraging diversity and inclusivity in the 1DFF community. Watch this space as we continue to announce projects in the next few months!

Hello. I would like to include more poc in my stories, but I am not sure how to describe skin tones without seeming racist. Do you have any advice on how to do that?

I am not a person of color, so I cannot personally speak for them. However, my common sense is telling me that if you’re just describing the color of someone’s skin and not comparing that person’s skin color to something that could be offensive or attaching stereotypes/derogatory terms to their skin color, then It would be hard to argue that you’re being racist. 

It isn’t attacking someone’s skin color if you’re describing it. I found a really good blog that is all about writing people of color @writingwithcolor, so I definitely recommend you check it out. I won’t say much more on the topic because I am definitely not a professional, and I’m a primarily non-fiction writer and therefore don’t have much experience with it.
