Silly #Letterman story. When a guest would cancel last minute, Marv Albert was a reliable last minute fill-in. It was noticed by a writer and a bit was born. It may have been Who Asked For It or something similar. The idea was that backstage, there was a glass booth that Marv was in that said break in case of no show or something like that. In rehearsal, I was the stand-in for Marv. (I was writers’ assistant at this point) While I was in the booth, I thought to myself, “what is Dave going to say to me? I gotta have something funny to say back to him.” I racked my brain and thought of exactly what Dave would say. He came backstage to me in the booth and said, “Hey, Marv. You got enough air in there?” I replied with a resounding, “YES!” Like Marv would say when a Knick would sink a jumper. Dave cracked up. Steve O’Donnell told me after rehearsal that it really tickled Dave and they told Marv to respond the same way when the bit appeared on the show. It’s the oddest little things like this that would give me a rush and the encouragement to pursue being a comedy writer. Like I said silly. But making Letterman laugh is one of my biggest accomplishments.
