marinette grows into the role of the new guardian of the miraculous. she passes on the mantel of hero to her team, but retires the ladybug and chat noir miraculous. (it hurts to much to even think of using them again, to even entertain the possibility of a new ladybug or chat noir).
but every now and again, when she’s at her lowest
she takes the peacock out of its box, and greets duusu like an old friend. she looks at her with a sad smile, says a few words, and then she’s called into the miraculous.
marinette takes something- an old blue scarf, a charm bracelet from long ago, a ring she doesn’t touch otherwise- and lets her amok settle in.
she puts in all her energy, all her feelings, all her thoughts into making him
into making a new adrien, or maybe a new chat noir
and she’s not sure if it’s because of how she makes him, or if it’s just how the miraculous works, but he remembers her each time he exists again, and lets her sink into his arms, lets her tears stain his clothes
sometimes he’ll say something, try to comfort her
but in the end, he can’t stay
the miraculous is still broken, after all- she never figured out how to fix it
so she’ll pass out in his arms, the miraculous taking its toll on her
and she wakes up alone, struggling to move, to breathe, to stay awake
until, one day, she settles against him
and he lays her back into her sheets, leaving a kiss on her forehead, his eyes sad for her
and the transformation drops
