For me, the choice that changed my life was the decision to leave Omaha and go to school in London. The thing that fascinates me the most is just how much that choice changed my life.

He met her in the summer of '12. Liam Payne, 18, was a member of One Direction, which at the time, was a popular boy band that had sung their way into the hearts of thousands everywhere. He was from England. She, Ava Fife, 17, had nothing but dreams. So off she packed her bags and sailed across the ocean, eventually securing a job working in a concession stand at a beach. She was from Scotland. It's safe to say that when he met her for the first time, she was unlike anything or anyone he'd ever known. He was sure he had met the One. Suffice to say, she taught him lots of things. Things like tying knots and getting lost in books. And heartbreak.

"I'm so sorry," she said, voice trembling. She came towards me a little bit, her solitary suitcase aloft in a hand. I couldn't say anything. The pain was too much to bear at the sight of her leaving. Against my own will, my mouth opened and the two words that were choked out were, "Don't go." She looked at me with tea green eyes and softly kissed my forehead, and then she turned away and walked out my life. And that was the last time I ever saw those red locks and green eyes again. I sank down onto the bed and cried. My first real heartbreak.

I blinked away the tears so I could see again, expecting to see Hebe's weak smile again. Instead I saw her eyes closed and her head flopped backwards onto the pillow. "Hebe?" I panicked. She didn't respond, clearly having slipped into unconsciousness again. I cast around, looking for the button to call the doctor when a loud beeping started up. One of the monitors Hebe was attached to started flashing something on its screen, accompanied by an ear splitting beep.
The door flew open as a team of doctors rushed in and immediately started fiddling with the machine and attaching a breathing mask to Hebe's face.
"Son, can you wait outside please?" one of them asked me.
"No! I can't leave her!" I protested, unwilling to let go of Hebe's hand.
"You need to wait outside, please son it's for the best."
"Please don't make me leave!" I was still crying without even realising it, Hebe's hand gripped in my own when it was wrenched away by a doctor who was attaching a monitor to her fingertip. "No! Hebe!"

Sunny held up the BOP magazine in her friend's face excitedly as Lily finished reading the article. Or perhaps better said, contest. Honestly, the girl didn't know what to think of it all. It was exciting, wondrous, marvelous but…
A frown marred Sunny's face as she noticed her younger friend's brow furrow. "What's wrong?"
Lily glanced at her best friend's concerned look and apparently something in her gaze said it all. With a groan of frustration, Sunny exclaimed fervently, "No no no no no, nuh uh. You need to take a chill pill and your pessimism needs to kick it in the backseat for this."
The curly haired girl looked away and didn't respond. She knew Sunny was right, but…
Sunny rubbed circles over her temples and closed her eyes as if to relieve her irritation. "Before you say anything, just think of this."
Lily sat attentively but kept eating the food on her plate. She rolled her eyes at the situation. Here they went again, Sunny brimming with optimism, Lily preferring to be a realist – or as the tall girl liked to call it, an aguafiestas or a person who rained on the parade.
"Listen girl. This is just for fun; if it one of us wins we win and have the best fucking time of our lives. If we don't, sucks for us and all the other girls who entered, but we tried. Whatever, we'll have another sleepover and pretend we don't give a damn."

"Feeling confident?" Simon asked the group at large.
There was a series of nods and agreement as we all stood holding our mics, wanting to get started.
"Good." Simon looked pleased and he nodded to Matt to start playing. As the first few chords sounded, we exchanged smiles and I gave Liam a confident nod which he returned before walking forwards to sing his line.
"I thought I saw a girl brought to life, she was warm she came around and she was dignified, she showed me what it was to cry."
But you couldn't be that girl I adored, you don't seem to know, seem to care, what your heart is for, but I don't know her anymore."
While Liam was singing, I psyched myself up for my part that was coming up next, taking a deep breath before my line and waling forwards to join Liam.
"There's nothing left, I used to cry, my conversation has run dry, that's what's going on. Nothing's fine I'm Torn!"
At this point, Louis sang with me in harmony as the other three boys performed backing vocals and we all gathered at the front of the performance area.
"I'm all out of faith, this is how I feel, I'm cold and I am shamed, lieing naked on the floor. Illusions never change, into something real, I'm wide awake and I can see the perfect sky is torn! You're a little late, I'm already torn."
"I'm already, I'm already torn." Zayn sang.

The way she laughs at everything stupid I do," I began and Earhart cut in by saying, "She must laugh a lot then." I scowled and then continued. "Erm, the way she finds everything fascinating. So she takes a picture. Says it's to keep the moment immortalized or something. The way she can't cook." Here, I laughed. "I remember cooking spaghetti with her and she accidentally put in dishwater. The way she reads thick, thick books. Or the way she carries Hazza around the loft all of the time." I took a breath. "I even love her tattoo. The words."

An inelegant snort escaped Lily as she stood next to the bundle of sheets on the bed that was the drowsy form of Sunny. The room was dark what with the shades of the window barring light from the room. Lily tapped her foot impatiently with arms crossed as her friend tried to find the land of slumber that had escaped her.
"No pity here, I'm waking up before seven for the rest of my life, Sunny."
The tall brunette harshly muttered something from under the sheets, unfortunately Lily caught her words. The short girl just raised an eyebrow and smirked. She silently strode over to the window, loosening the shades so they let in the light and skipped over next to the sleeping girl with a mess of dark curls bouncing around her.
Suddenly a pair of quick hands pulled away the striped sheets, exposing Sunny's face to her namesake – mister blazing Sun himself. Sunny – who had been slowly stretching herself awake underneath the sheets – immediately closed her eyes and buried her face into the pillow, shouting various Spanish swear words at her best friend.
Lily sat on the bed laughing. "You know, a simple ah, the light would have sufficed."

"We worked something out today actually!" Liam said happily. "It sounds pretty good… to us anyway." He added, with a laugh.
"Can I hear it? Please!" I asked, really interested to hear them all sing together, having only heard Harry sing before.
"Only if you sing for us afterwards." Louis said and Harry shot me a panicked look.
He started speaking. "You don't ha-"
"Deal." I cut him off and he looked shocked but pleased. I'd been singing my audition piece so much for the last few days and the only people I could perform in front of were my mum and Grace. It was the perfect opportunity to let someone else hear, and I didn't feel scared. I wanted to do this.
"Okay Lot, if you're sure."
"Of course I'm sure. You go first though." I said and the boys exchanged looks before visibly switching from the crazy mood they were in to more serious expressions.
"We haven't got any music so we might be a bit off." Liam explained; I was already getting the impression that he was really enthusiastic about the music side of things.
"Okay, ready?" Harry said to the others and they all nodded, preparing themselves to sing. Niall counted them in then Liam started singing.
