The photobook "Hong Kong Summer: Double Suicide" by Chan Wai-Kwong resonates deeply with me. I appreciate this work because it reflects my home city, and I can see a narrative in each human portrait through their facial expressions. Overall, the photobook is aesthetically pleasing. I find inspiration in the way he presents the stories and the dynamic, blurry photos he captures. I intend to incorporate some of these techniques into my own work.

"Portrait of Hong Kong"- Fan Ho
"Portrait of Hong Kong" by Fan Ho features black and white and colour photographs taken in the 1950s and 60s. I chose this photobook because it represents Hong Kong, and as a member of Generation X, I am eager to learn more about the city’s past. Looking at this familiar place, I realize there are still aspects I don’t know or feel uncertain about. I appreciate the photos displayed on the website, they evoke a sense of familiarity while also feeling foreign to me. I resonate deeply with this photobook and am drawn to it. I aim to learn from Fan Ho’s storytelling techniques in capturing old Hong Kong, particularly his use of light and shadow, which enhances the emotional depth of his images.

"Hong Kong 2019" - Takehiko Nakafuji
"Hong Kong 2019" by Takehiko Nakafuji, a Japanese photographer, captures his views and memories of Hong Kong during a time of intense protests for democracy. I deeply resonate with this photobook as it reminds me of the significant events that unfolded during that period. I appreciate how Nakafuji documents the journey, transitioning from normal street snaps to images of protesting masses, evoking memories of what Hong Kong was like before those events. His use of black and white tones enhances the feeling that the real Hong Kong has disappeared. I plan to apply his storytelling techniques and use a similar black and white approach in my own work to create a sense of nostalgia and memory for viewers.
