The Testaments S01E09 "Marat Sade"
CANON GILEAD LESBIANS CANON GILEAD LESBIANS
Chase saying Agnes doesn’t really even understand queerness she just knows she loves Becka 😭
The Testaments (2026) // The Children’s Hour (1961)
THE TESTAMENTS 1.09 "Marat Sade"
THE TESTAMENTS 1.04 "Green Tea"
THE TESTAMENTS 1.02 "Perfect Teeth"
daisy trying to be there for becka and let her know her feelings are perfectly normal in that godforsaken country that brands gay women as gender traitors 😭
Beckagnes Stocks are UPP!!!! People
The concept of Hannah having a lust vs. Love situation going on in regards to her feelings for Becka and Garth. The concept of her realising this through how far she is willing to go to save Becka’s life. The way she describes her feelings for Garth have always been very physical, and not very emotional, in a way. She realises that what she feels for Becka is much stronger than that, more spiritual. She would go further for her and all together would die for her in a way that she wouldn’t for Garth. Which must be a very conflicting and somewhat scary thought, that surely has shaken her worldview like crazy!! Can’t wait to see where this going in season two🥲!!
I was delirious watching the finale late last night and it is only hitting me now how big a deal it was that Agnes begged Garth to marry Becka. Like obviously we know she has feelings for him, but now that her engagement has been broken off, you would expect her to want Garth not to go through with it so they have a chance to be matched in the future. Hell, she was begging Becka not to marry him even when she knew she herself was supposed to be married off to someone else, which logically made no sense and tbh was an awful thing to say because marrying Maddox or a colony commander would have been horrible for Becka. She was prioritizing her crush over the safety of her best friend.
But now, something has shifted. Idk if it’s because seeing Becka get taken by the Eyes made her realize how much she means to her, or if Becka destroying her life to protect her inspired her to do the same, or quite possibly both, but either way, she stepped the fuck up. Not just by throwing a wrench in her own marriage plans (to her, Weston would look like a good match even if she didn’t want him) to save Becka, but by prioritizing her afterwards. Previously, she was choosing Garth over Becka, despite everything they had been through. This episode, she chose Becka over Garth.
That kiss was so satisfying because it felt earned. Not that Agnes “earned” the right to kiss Becka, but that she did the internal work necessary to get her to the point where she would. I think the combination of what Becka did for her and almost losing Becka made her realize how much she loves her, even if she’s not sure what kind of love that is. She looks a little confused during and after the kiss, but also certain. She looks like she does want it, even if she’s not sure what it means.
Ngl the show really outdid my expectations here. While Agnes was obviously very attached to Becka and afraid of losing her in episode 1, she was clearly unaware of having any feelings for her until recently, and I was afraid the show would go the tired route of the yearning gay best friend getting rebuffed and continuing to suffer with something totally unrequited. I had a hard time cheering for this ship early on because I truly did not expect them to go there, and so early on too! But damn, now I am truly invested. Agnes going from kissing Becka (her first kiss!), to having to watch her marry the boy she’s been pining over only minutes later is absolutely wild, and it sets up a very interesting season 2 where the two people she has feelings for are in a loveless marriage to each other. The drama is juicy, and a queer awakening storyline in Gilead is terrifying but extremely interesting, especially with Agnes being one of the narrators. As a queer person who grew up in Evangelicalism, I can’t wait to see where this all goes. I was already attached to the story for the catharsis even if I expected it to be only pain, but now that there’s a chance it could go in a more happy direction, where maybe the whole thing is not entirely doomed? Sign me the fuck up.
(I am crossposting this btw, so if you see it elsewhere I am only plagiarizing myself).
Btw it is criminal how very little beckagnes fics I found on ao3 can anyone recommend me some? 😭
Propaganda I will not be falling for:
Agnes/Hannah kissing Becka out of pity
Agnes/Hannah being in love with Garth
Agnes/Hannah kissing Becka because of Platonic Friendship
Agnes/Hannah being straight
Agnes/Hannah + Garth endgame
Agnes/Hannah not realising her feelings for Becka
Agnes/Hannah + Becka not being endgame
Agnes/Hannah + Becka not living happily ever after outside of Gilead
I feel like a lot of people are missing the point that these girls live in an ultra-fascist patriarchal society where they are viewed primarily as future wives and breeders, and where religion dictates nearly every aspect of their lives. That's what Gilead is.
People keep discussing the kiss as if it happened in our world, where a kiss between two girls might not carry the same weight. But this isn't our world.
In Gilead, being queer isn't merely frowned upon. It's dangerous.
That's why I find the "it was just a comfort kiss" interpretation interesting. Because even if that's true, it's still a kiss. In a society built around controlling women's bodies, relationships, and sexuality, that kind of intimacy means something.
I'm not even saying the scene proves they're destined to be together. What I'm saying is that the choice itself matters.
The writers could have given them a hug or a conversation. Instead, they chose a reciprocated kiss in the final stretch of the season finale.
Whether the moment was romantic, symbolic, or something in between, I think it's meant to have consequences. Otherwise, why choose a kiss at all?
If Agnes were a boy, fans would be going absolutely wild. Why is it that when a man kisses a woman (or vice versa), the moment is almost immediately framed as passionate or romantic?
Fans would already be rooting for them to run away together and start a new life far away from Gilead if this were a guy/girl pairing. Honestly, even if they were both boys, the fandom reaction would probably be very different.
“ Oh, it was just a comfort/pity kiss.”
I love my friends dearly, but NEVER in my life have I kissed a friend just to comfort them.
I understand the argument people are making, but if I were Becka, I would absolutely feel some type of way after that moment. Maybe for her, this truly is a closing of their 'relationship', but is risking that level of emotional and physical vulnerability really worth it if the relationship is meant to stay strictly platonic?
And honestly… if the kiss is never brought up again in season 2, was it even worth including at all instead of a conversation or a simple hug?
If it's platonic, why doesn't it look platonic?
Becka out there representing all the real yearners out there
Out there exemplifying for all loser lesbians with straight girl crushes, doing fantastic work. I bet she's writing poems and buying agnes' perfume to sigh over.
God speed comrade.
Agnes returns Becka's feelings (evidence compilation)
I believe the subtext of The Testaments foreshadows Agnes being in love with Becka too. And the 2 eventually escaping Gilead together.
Maybe it’s another queer bait (even though the 2 kissed) . But in terms of the whole love triangle between Agnes/ Becka and Agnes/ Garth . People forget Garth is an adult man, and Agnes is underaged . It’s weird everyone ignores that, and ships her with him . It would kind of go against the themes of the show to have her get with him when the show explores how adult men exploit/ groom young girls. 😩 I’m pretty sure Garth only cares about Agnes in a non romantic way (since he's her "guardian").
