part of being an adult is figuring out what eveyone else's definition of "going crazy" is. to you it is not sleeping for 60 hours, writing 80k words in one sitting and expiriencing enough anxiety to kill a horse. to beth from accounting its buying a ticket to Columbus, Ohio. and to your friend its consuming so much ketamine you lose all of your posessions and wake up with five broken bones in a ditch somewhere and then proceeding to do it again the next day. to your other friend its writing a letter to their favourite actress about how much they appreciate her work. to your neighbour its laughing loudly in a grocery store whilst in pajamas. maya from uni hears the voice of her dead father making jokes with no punchlines and she considers that to be quite normal - to her going crazy would be hearing her husband instead. your downstairs neighbour will take night walks naked sometimes and claim there is nothing weird about him. there are literally no rules to life and all meaning is in the eye of the beholder.
long distance friendships are terrible what do you mean I can’t hug you or sit with you or lay on your floor when I’m bored what dO YOU MEAN
Here's an idea about why kids are so anxious and depressed all the time...the environments kids are in most of the time are very stressful and don't fulfill their needs for play, rest, proper variety of foods, positive social opportunities, and freedom from fear pain punishment etc
They. They forgor
They were opened in AUGUST 2001. Oh my god. That's both hilarious and tragic.

The fact that part of why Carol’s story is so horrifying is that she’s a victim of childhood abuse now essentially being forced to be a child again now experiencing similar abuse yet again. Or at least the threat of it. And just experiencing all the horrors of being a child. Like as a child your parents when you eat and what you eat and where you get said food. They decide what you get to have and what you don’t get to have. And they can force you to do whatever they please as long as a larger power doesn’t categorize it as abuse. When you’re a child and you don’t understand what’s happening around you you just have to trust the information adults around you give you and hope they’re telling you the truth. (They aren’t always) and if they aren’t telling you the truth you can’t do anything about it. And worst of all she’s experiencing the threat of the same abuse she faced as a child “We don’t like who you are and we are gonna force you to change it” Imagine if you were a 54 year old victim of child abuse who’d escaped your family and the general horrors of being a child only to be forced to be a child again and face similar abuse. Once again by people who claim to love you. And just like being a child. You can’t escape it any way other than just….waiting until you finally can.
You ever hear that old chestnut about how most people neglect the part of the story of Icarus where he also had to avoid flying too low, lest the spray of the sea soak his feathers and cause him to fall and drown? You ever think about how different the world would be if Icarus died that way instead? If the idiom was to Fly To Close To The Sea? A warning against playing it far too safe, about not stretching your wings and soaring properly? You ever think about how Icarus died because he was happy?

These days, lots of public libraries have a "library of things" collection where you can check out kitchen appliances or yard tools or toys, and, as a children's library assistant, the most popular library of things item that I handle regularly is a plastic scepter thingy called like "unicorn princess magic wand". And whenever I check it out I make a big show of looking at the little kid and being like "do you solemnly swear to use your unicorn princess magic powers only for good and never for evil?"
And pretty much without fail, the little kid will get the world's most mischievous grin and go "I'm gonna use it for EVIL!!!"
sometimes I look at my friends and I am just overwhelmed by the sheer luck of it. the universe is so violently massive and terrifyingly empty, but somehow, against all odds, my brand of weird gravity pulled in your brand of weird gravity. we are just ghosts haunting the same corner of the internet, sharing a brain cell, and keeping each other tethered to the earth.
I see so many arguments over what is and isn't "good queer representation" that really just boil down to "y'all are actually arguing over matters of taste and genre preference, which is incredibly subjective and personal."
Worldbuilding where being queer is normalized and queerphobia has no impact on the plot? THAT'S FINE. Worldbuilding that includes queerphobia and tackles the effects of it as part of the story? THAT'S ALSO FINE.
Low-stakes queer romcom where the characters are fluffy and cute? THAT'S COOL. Messy queer drama with toxic people who fuck each other over and clash repeatedly? THAT'S ALSO COOL.
Stories that center the characters' queerness, show a trans character's transition, and are about the queerness as much as the rest of the plot? AWESOME. Stories where the characters' queerness isn't treated as a big deal, and have trans characters whose transition happened before the story entirely? ALSO AWESOME.
You may PREFER one thing or another, but it is actually good to have all these things. It's about variety. It's about queer characters being allowed to exist without censorship. It's about queer artists getting to make things without being told we're a "niche issue" or "adult content." It's about having as many goddamn cakes as the bakery can produce.
At the end of the day, I'd prefer a media landscape with fifty pieces of problematic queer representation over a media landscape with one single piece of queer representation that's trying (and usually failing) to be 100% perfect for everything and everyone.
