The Life of 2 'Older' Lesbian Moms and Our Family

A look into our world. 2 lesbian who have been together for over 20 years, 3 kids - Our daughter - Age 13 and our sons age - 11, my 83 year old mother. Can't tell you what life will bring us tomorrow but this is not what I thought we would be doing when we started dating in 1993...life was just a party then.... oh the good old day!

My wife and I scheduled a tattoo appointment for today and I was supposed to get a 9-11 memorial tattoo that our tattoo artist Andrew drew up last time we were in. Well this morning the universe has other plans for me. I woke up thinking about 2 of my aunts who past away over the last 18 months and when I went to shower and get ready for the appointment all I could do was think of them and butterflies. It was so strange. It was like they wanted me to change my tattoo to the one I was planning next. I knew I would eventually get something for them but hadn’t figured out what it would be yet. So as soon I I got out of the shower I started to look up real butterflies that would best represent each of them.

My one aunt was my godmother and the matriarch of our family. She was one tough cookie who would give you the world but don’t fuck with her because you would pay dearly and she would never let you forget. Her favorite color was yellow. So I found white/black badass butterfly with a yellow underside that had heart shapes along the outer edge. Perfect for her. It is placed above the Celtic knot that I have on my are so she will always watch over the family.

My other aunt lived with me my entire life. She was a funny, kind, loving, quirky woman who as she got older developed dementia. Life with her was always fun and full of laughter so her butterfly had to be quite unique. She loved animal print clothes and one blouse in particular which would never stay buttoned. Found a tiger/leopard butterfly that reminded me of that blouse. Her butterfly is on the font of my forearm so as she was there with me my whole life so will she be forever.

Andrew at Scott Hill Tattoo in Closter NJ did an amazing job on both butterflies. These were real butterflies and he did an amazing job on the little details. I love them.

Now I will have my aunts with me to watch over me forever….as I know they always have.

While we were there my wife got 2 of her tattoos retouched and they also look amazing!

When you realize you are doing a good job raising your kids

Sometimes as a parent...well as a lesbian parent you wonder if you are doing a good job and if your kids are okay with the fact that you are gay. Yesterday was our local gay pride celebration. First of all we are lucky enough to live in an area that is welcoming and has a gay pride celebration. Next, they just recently opened an amazing LGBTQ+ Center for our area adults and youth. We can't wait to see what programs and events will be upcoming. Ok....so we weren't going to go to the yesterday's celebration but the kids begged us. They said they like to see families like ours and love being around more gay/lesbian people. (Who knew? They tell us nothing. Lol ) Five seconds after getting there one of our sons bought a rainbow 🌈 wand. He carried it everywhere we went for the rest of the day. Son #2 bought a rainbow ring to go with the ring he took from my wife that had female symbols on it. He has been wearing that one for about 4 years and never takes it off. Our daughter bought a trans flag to go with her rainbow flag that she has at home and also bought a Rockland Pride 2017 t-shirt to wear to school today. Then as we were walking around #2 son stops us and declares that he thinks he only likes gay and trans people because he (who likes very few people) feels very comfortable here and really likes all of these people. The people in the booths we were standing in front of declared their love for him and clapped. He bowed and thanked them. I think they are all okay with having a family that is different than other families and may even be better off than some. If we were all the same life would be boring. Love the life you have. Love the ones in it the best you can.

When you don’t have time to get yourself a haircut because of life….take out the trusty Wahl and have at it. Risky….I know! Quick trim and it didn’t cost me almost $100 to look questionable like last year. You all remember that lovely cut. 😩 What do you think? Wahl with #3 & 4 in back and 1 & 2 on sides. Didn’t touch the top. Now I can wait another month.
