ok but the way he's still kind of getting outcunted by the guy on the left
Me only scrolling down enough to see the first photo: they should fuck about it
Scrolling down further: oh they are fucking about it. Excellent!
in light of Trump's inauguration speech declaring multiple national emergencies that require him to take god-knows-what executive actions immediately, I'd like to remember this chapter of "On Tyranny" by Timothy Snyder:
"it was in 2020" oh so like a year or so ago. a couple years. im sorry 5? did you just say five? five years ago ?
Food for thought
Yeah, this sort of stuff serves several purposes, including:
Confuse the masses as to what the actual law is
Get people to obey in advance
Demoralise the opposition
Signal intention to supporters
^^ I was thinking, like, "surely we all remember this from last time," but then I thought about it again, and realized that there are people who voted this year, who wouldn't even have been in their teens during the previous Trump rodeo.
So yeah, if you weren't following it last time, there will be a lot of Executive Orders that get walked back, struck down, or, once subjected to even mildly rigorous legal interpretation, turn out to have little or no effect.
When you see that Trump has signed an EO about something that seems drastic and scary, take a breath and wait a few hours, then see what the experts are saying about it.
At least two major artists (Lady Gaga and Chappell Roan) making a point to vocally support trans people the Grammys is a big deal in this political climate.
Also I think it's worth highlighting that they are both cis women, because bigots want us to believe cis women and trans women/trans people are at odds with each other.
Lady Gaga has ALWAYS been like this and ALWAYS been in our corner.
She used to be slandered as a trans woman tricking the public back when she debuted, and her response was literally "and so what if I was? Would it be so terrible?", rather than the expected "no I'm not but I support them!" or honestly the more normal for the time "I'm not a freak, Ew.".
This was at her debut, btw, so when her star power was at its weakest. And she still stood by us completely unflinchingly.
Lady Gaga has ALWAYS been like this. I fuckin love her.
Yes thank you for bringing this up!!!
I would also like to point out a few things.
Both women are queer. Lady Gaga has stated that she's bisexual numerous times, and Chappell Roan is an open lesbian.
Lady Gaga has toyed with gender in the past. Both with a male persona (featured in the "You & I" video) and by asking a person how they identified (in 2011!) and then saying that she "probably" identified as a woman more than the person she was talking to. Chappell Roan often toys with gender presentation.
Chappell Roan has identified as a lesbian for a long time, but a lot of her early work features men. She thought she was bi and realized she wasn't.
These women aren't just allies to Trans people - they're a part of our community (LGBTQIA+) and they're doing the work even though no one would blame them for choosing to protect themselves. It's a scary time and femme queer people are at a heightened risk for violence, but they've chosen to take a public stance, because it's the right thing to do.
Can we remember that when the dust settles? Please?
as things get harder and harder for transgender people, i find its important for people to share this link
vital resource
reblog + save + share as much as you can
i appreciate that i saw both of these on my dash within about five posts of each other. we’re gonna need both moods going forward, tbh.
If you want to feel a little hope, consider dropping by r/fednews. They're getting angry and sharing the emails and memos they've been getting.
This sub helped change my mood from despair and anxiety to hot flaming anger and resolve. Another refrain from there is “I ain’t fucking going anywhere!”
This is delightful, thank you for sharing.
The amount of "I was thinking of quitting, this is so disheartening, but now I'm mad as hell and they can pry my job out of my cold, dead hands" is just...inspiring.
We survive through spite, folks.
I finally watched The Sound of Music and like I get it now, I get it.
It’s a beautiful two hour love story of a strict man finally opening his heart again and then a fifty minute public service announcement to hate the nazis. Brilliant.
You’re not wrong there…
Reblogging this version cuz those two gifs show the sexiest duality a man can have.
2 things a man should do
Look at me like he can’t believe I exist
Hate nazis
ya’ll were really gonna let me live my life in ignorance thinking mr. rogers was straight???
oh whoops, did we forget to tell you? there’s a quote in The Good Neighbor where Mr. Rogers talked about being attracted to both men and women
FRED ROGERS I LOVE YOU EVEN MORE
WOOOO
Added to the pantheon of Holy Bisexuals, right next to Freddy Mercury.
Of course Mr. Rogers loved everyone equally.
having a cat is great. there's a small little animal wandering around. effervescent
EATING MY CHARGER
Adjusting things in prison.
Other things he has done while in prison:
He has given gifts to the other inmates for Christmas using the donations people sent his commissary account.
He appears to have attempted to communicate through flashing his cell lights to show his supporters outside that he could hear them cheering for him (this exact light flashing is what inmates at the previous prison did to communicate to the news that they were in support of Luigi, so he may have learned it from them and taken this form of light communication with him to MDC.)
It is rumored he is paying for the other inmates' healthcare using donations to his commissary account.
Inmates who shared time with him at the Penn prison say he 'gave them a voice' when they 'had never had one before' (in reference to the collective shouting 'Free Luigi' the inmates did.
He is writing back to supporters and is alleged to have informed one supporter that he is warm, taken care of, and will be okay. He does not want people to stay up at night worrying about him.
Just a reminder, we still don't know he's not the shooter, but waow based
What part of "innocent until proven guilty" are we losing here
seeing all the 14-17 y/o queer kids who don’t know what v for vendetta is…. u mean the blockbuster film written by two trans women about a masked vigilante who decides to singlehandedly take down a fascist alternate version of england set in the distant year of 2020… and his driving force was getting justice for a lesbian who he never met but whose diary he found, who was separated from her wife before being killed by said fascist gov…. and it stars natalie portman…. okay
the movie is great, with amazing acting:
and the original graphic novel is phenomenal:
I highly recommend them both
and they’ve never been more relevant
“People shouldn’t be afraid of their government. Governments should be afraid of their people.”
There’s strong subtext that V is a trans man and A)the lesbian from the diary or B)her wife.
frankly I prefer the movie over the comic, for three reasons:
1) lewis prothero as a rush limbaugh/glenn beck/bill o’reilly type is both more applicable and way funnier than a 1940s radio propagandist
2) it has stephen fry as gordon detriech, and makes him explicitly gay and pretending to be attracted to evey as part of being closeted than actually attracted to evey and having sex with her while she hides in his home.
3) the movie came out in 2005; that is, only four years after 9/11, while the Iraq war was still in full swing, and while xenophobia and Islamophobia were not just acceptable, but tacitly encouraged by the administration at the time. which makes the following exchange even more poignant and sweet:
Evey: [seeing a book in a glass display case] What is that? Gordon: It’s a copy of the Qur’an, 14th century. Evey: [shocked] Are you a Muslim? Gordon: No, I’m in television. Evey: But why would you keep it? Gordon: I don’t have to be a Muslim to find the images beautiful or its poetry moving.
just… the easy acceptance of it. the idea that a religion that he doesn’t believe in and that has been explicitly outlawed in-universe is a source of beauty. I’m not Muslim, either, but that particular moment really stuck with me emotionally.
Love this movie
“…I remember how different became dangerous. I still don’t understand it, why they hate us so much. They took Ruth while she was out buying food. I’ve never cried so hard in my life. It wasn’t long till they came for me.
It seems strange that my life should end in such a terrible place, but for three years, I had roses, and apologize to no one.
I shall die here. Every inch of me shall perish. Every inch, but one. An Inch, it is small and it is fragile, but it is the only thing in the world worth having. We must never lose it or give it away. We must never let them take it from us.
I hope that whoever you are, you escape this place. I hope that the world turns and that things get better. But what I hope most of all is that you understand what I mean when I tell you that even though I do not know you, and even though I may never meet you, laugh with you, cry with you, or kiss you. I love you. With all my heart, I love you. -Valerie”
SOBBING
Thi movie changed me so much. So so much.
