Beginner Tips/ Steps for Wicca (more in depth and better)

Hello! Welcome to my 2nd blog over Wicca/Witchcraft tips for Beginners!

1. Research! Always do research FIRST! Don’t get into something you don’t know about.

2. Learn the threefold law. It is: 1.What you give out comes back to you 10 times.2.The sins of the fathers are carried forward for 7 generations (for those who don’t believe in reincarnating and reaping it in future lives).3.What you do to others will be done to you. Etc.

3. Find the path you want. If it’s kitchen magick, tea magick, herb magick, astrology, Etc. All are welcome and equally awesome!

4. Find a patron/matron God/Goddess. This is important on so many levels! Some people choose theirs, and others wait for a calling. I’d say you can do it either way.

5. Build your altar! It’s important to build or set up any form of altar. It could be super simple, or very complex! You should always include something for the elements, your path and especially an offering/dedication to your patron/matron God/Goddess.

6. Keep a Book of Shadows (BOS). You can store all your findings and information you’ve come across throughout your journey! It is also good to include an ‘all about me’ page, informational pages, and specific things that you have found about yourself on your path.

7. Learn spells. This will take a long time to master! Do not expect to wake up one morning and be able to be the best witch in town! It won’t happen. That being said, practice makes perfect! Keep practicing! It is also best to make your own spells once you get more advanced. Sure, finding online spells is quick and easy, but a handmade spell is much, much more effective.

8. Meditate. It’s not 100% necessary, but it will help you in many ways! However, I’d recommend meditating in a peaceful, quiet setting.

9. Be careful. Be really careful when talking about your religion. Some people may get upset or offended. Often people are close-minded and don’t want to listen to what you have to say. Just ignore them. There’s no reason to pick a fight! Besides, what you give out will always come back to you! Also, if you have Christian parents (I do too, sorry guys! It sucks!), be extremely careful. Especially if you think they could kick you out of the house or hate you and shun you. If you feel the need to tell them…go ahead! It’s your choice. But be careful about what you say and do.

10. Practice many forms of Wicca/Witchcraft. There’s only one way to tell what you’re best at! Practice everything!

11. Tarot Cards. I personally use regular cards (but I’m working my way up to getting a fresh new pack of Tarot Cards!) for Tarot Reading. I have just started learning about Tarot (so don’t come to me asking questions. I won’t have answers.) and it’s very fun so far! I think it’s a good experience.

12. Crystals. Buy some crystals! Especially if you are a witch that prefers to work with crystals! Yea I know they can be pretty expensive…But hey! It’s totally worth it! Before buying crystals, research the uses for each and know when, how and why you use them. Don’t ever misuse things like that. 

13. Herbs/plants. Decorate your house in plants, especially if you’re a witch with a strong connection to nature! It will help you feel more earthy! If you’re a Kitchen Witch, herbs are necessary. And helpful!

14. Clothes. You don’t have to wear anything specific to be a witch! Sometimes, it’s better to dress ‘normal.’ Especially, if you have a school/family/friends that would react negatively. Maybe just wear a pentagram necklace.

15. Celebrate the Holidays! Witches have Holidays too! You could search for ways to celebrate the Days such as Samhain or Imbolc Etc. Do it!!! It’s important!

Beginner Witch Tips

Read. Before you even think about practicing magick, you need to study. It sounds tedious, I know, but witchcraft is not a trivial undertaking. 

Start a grimoire/Book of Shadows/Journal. You’ll need a safe place to keep all of the information you’ve gathered safe, and a grimoire (as I call mine), is essentially a notebook for that exact purpose. It doesn’t have to be fancy (though you’re welcome to make it as ostentatious as you like), – it can be a bullet journal if that’s easy for you. Within your grimoire, you should keep all gathered information, spells, failures, successes, records of work you’ve done, etc,. Anything that pertains to your craft.

Don’t put pressure on yourself to pick a path. You might see a lot of witches who class themselves as one thing or another, e.g., storm witches, kitchen witches, elemental witches, spirit/divination witches; green witches; cosmic witches, and so on.That is cool and their prerogative, but you will also see witches known as eclectic. Eclectic Witches, are simply witches who choose to practise many different types of magick and forge their own path, instead of following only one, or following a pre-established path. Basically, there is no need at all, whatsoever, to label yourself. With many of us, our paths found us in time. 

Research paths, secular witchcraft and religious witchcraft.Witchcraft alone, is a practice. However, some paths are indeed religious, such as Wicca. Make sure you know the difference before you begin actively practicing and before you decide on your path, if you do choose to do so.

Carry a little notebook on your person.You can’t always carry your grimoire with you, so I personally like to carry a tiny little notebook with me, for those moments when inspiration takes me, or if something captures my imagination or attention. You can add it to your grimoire/BoS later.

Oh, and one more thing: don’t ever stop learning and reading and recording. Witchcraft is a path of continuous learning.

Things to Research:

Crystals/gemstones/minerals

Herb and crystal correspondences, e.g., such as color and planetary.

Sabbats (also known as “Witches Sabbaths”) and esbats.

The basic tools of witchcraft.

Altars (if you’re so inclined).

Lunar phases.

Divination, e.g., tarot, runes, pendulums. 

Witchcraft and deities (if you’re so inclined).

Traditional witchcraft practises, such as circle casting.

SAFETY! What is safe to use/burn/touch/ingest. There are lots of poisonous and potentially fatal plants and ingredients out there.

Easy/budget magick/witchcraft.

The history of witchcraft, including lore, myths and tales.

The importance and use of the elements in magick

Research cultural witchcraft. Make sure that your practice does not steal from closed cultures. 

Easy Practices for New Witches:

Grounding – grounding is the act of centering your energy and focusing it within yourself. You can ground yourself by being out in nature and using visualising techniques that tie your energies firmly into the ground (very traditional method), or by finding a quiet place that you are content in and meditating.

Meditation.

Visualisation/visualising.

Sigil crafting/creation.

Dream interpretation.

Charging jewellery/crystals/objects/sigils.

Using glamours in makeup/cosmetics/everyday wear.
