Dear Service dog âpoliceâ
Dear service dog âpoliceâ, No, he is not a fake service dog and no, it is none of your business what my disability is. It is not your right to ask me why I have a service dog, and nor is it your right to tell me that I am A. too young to be disabled,B. too pretty to be disabled or C. donât look disabled. The fact that so many SD handlers have gotten used to being attacked by fakes to the point that so many of us immediately assume another SD is a fake is ridiculous and needs to stop. When Hero makes a mistake and I immediately correct him, and he falls back into my side, you should not scoff and assume he is a fake SD or that I am not disabled. I have put over 200 hours of training into this dog and I expect him to behave but he occasionally does have a bad day or messes up and sniffs someone. I have never let him get away with it and immediately correct him. I do not want to be judged for how I look, the gear I choose to use, or his breed, because it is none of your business to know that. I am always willing to educate, but sometimes I just want to simply buy my bag of Apples and go on with my life. It is not your business to know that I have spent the last 2 years being bounced around to different Doctors and told different things, nor is it your business to know my diagnosis or feel sorry for me. My dog is my lifeline, and to automatically assume that I am a faker is rude, and ridiculous. Get off your high horse and treat other SD handlers like they are human. You donât know my situation. Leave me alone. Sincerely, NJ and Hero PS: I am not condoning fake SDâs or inappropriate behavior such as barking ,attacking someone, or disturbing customers.
For an individual to qualify for a Service Animal they must have a qualifying disability under the Definition of the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) (The definition for disabled under the ADA is not the same as the definition for Social Security)
An individual with a qualifying disability who has a dog does not automatically make that dog a Service Animal. Its just a dog.
If an individual with a qualifying disability has a dog that has been task trained to help mitigate the individuals disability then that dog is qualified as a Service Animal under the definition guidelines set by the ADA.
If a dog has been task trained but its handler is not disabled the dog is not qualified as a Service Animal and will not be covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act.
