When the children were growing up, their father would take them to Coney Island. Daniel recalls that the area is not what it is today.

“When Dave and I were younger, we used to go on the weekends and we’d go-kart,” said Daniel. “We used to play Ski Ball. [Our father was] unbelievable at all those games because he used to work there.”

One fond memory that Laurie holds dear is the nightly ritual that her father would perform for her.

“He sang me, every night, a song by Louis Prima called ‘Robin Hood,’” she said. “And that’s what I sing to my two kids.”

“He had a great eye and ear for detail,” Blauner recalls. “Everything in his writing was keenly-observed, and he was committed to his work. Perhaps above all else, he was a very versatile writer, equally at home and deft writing about the comic, the sad, the sublime, and the downright bizarre.”

One of the most heart breaking things about the X files is when you see scenes with Mulder and his parents and you realize that growing up this kid looked after these two dysfunctional adults. The way he soothed his father when he was trying to explain his role in Samantha’s abduction is one of those clear windows into their dynamic. There are definitely signs Mulder was the child of an alcoholic, particularly the way he gravitates towards codependence. Or the way he is with his mother after she’s had a stroke and it’s so clear this isn’t the first time he’s had to take care of her. So imagine a kid has grown up and has boundaries with this parent he felt responsible for, and then instead of telling him she’s terminally ill, she commits suicide while he’s in the middle of an emotionally draining case for him. The woman didn’t even give him a chance to say goodbye or tell him that she loved him, total parenting fail.

Both his parents also let Mulder blame himself for his sister’s abduction. Plus, when Samantha was ‘returned’ his father knew that was a clone and still blamed him for picking Scully over her! These people suck, no wonder it took Mulder and Scully so long to get together, she had to do a lot of work at reprogramming the ingrained dysfunction.
