Nam Jihyun, how did you get prettier like that these days?
“It’s because my hair dye came out well.” A very honest answer. “I trained my muscles a lot with pull downs and leg presses. Only doing ballet doesn’t develop my muscles. I do ballet to train my posture and exercise in gym too.”
As a leader, Nam Jihyun is closer to the kind and wise type. Rather than leading with strong charisma, she’s the type to emphasize close teamwork and communication. If there’s a thesis about the topic “Girl Group Leadership”, it needs to study Nam Jihyun. We are curious about her secret, leading that ‘strong’ group for 7 years with that innocent look.
“At first I didn’t know that I would become the leader. Compared to the other members, my trainee period was the shortest. Before debut, the president called us to the meeting room and said, ‘From today on, Jihyun is the leader.’ I was taken aback and said, ‘I don’t have the confidence to do it’ but he said, ‘Then I don’t have confidence for you girls as well.’ Even after I became the leader, it was hard for a year. I even went to the president and asked whether it was possible to change the leader.”
This is the era that favors ‘female leadership with emotions and an open mind’. Even though it looks like it's only solicited when needed most, if there’s really a leadership like that, it's really needed even if we need to buy it using money. However, it’s not easy to find a new style of leadership in the midst of the authoritative man’s leadership.
Then is it an exaggeration to say that we can see a new leadership from Nam Jihyun?
“It’s not like that. It’s simply because all 5 of us have the personality of always giving in to each other first, so we have great chemistry. The members have always been understanding of my lacking points. There’s only one thing that I did. I didn’t classify higher or lower position according to each member's age. I always stressed on peace and equality instead. Apart from that, I learned from the members the most. I’m not above them but I’m at the same place as them. I think it’s best for everyone to take leadership of their own life.”
She said it modestly. However, Nam Jihyun did sacrifice something for 4minute. The popular concept these days is ‘Girl Crush’ and 4minute can be seen as the original Girl Crush group. They maintained the concept that aimed for girls more than boys and always carry the image of strong and confident women without any regret. It feels like for the color of the team, Nam Jihyun sacrificed the innocent and feminine image that suited her more.
“I heard that I was the member that suited the team color the least. (laughs) But, of course it’s something that I personally need to work hard on to match with.” The leader that suits light makeup and long straight hair rather than a female warrior concept. However, it's because they have that kind of leader that 4minute’s color doesn’t get dull.
We got curious about her school days suddenly. Did you use to be the class president?
“In my first year of high school, I was the head of physical education… I was the vice-president of the class when I was in elementary school, but I said to my mom that I hated going to school and she told me to withdraw next time. She also said that I needed to grow up myself. I don’t like to step up by myself. But I’m a little bit different if it’s something that I like. I entered dance club in high school and I always participated when there was a competition.”
Talking about school life, of course we can’t leave out dating. What was it like when you were in junior and high school?
“I think I acted coy and cold. I attended an all-girls school so I didn't have any male friends. Though sometimes there were a few boys who asked for my number when I was outside…” Looks like it’s not a few. We asked for a more detailed story.
“Even though we finally ended up dating, it was more like a messenger friend. We exchanged messages like, ‘It’s math class. Boring’, ‘Lunch time now, the kimchi is really delicious’. (laughs) Then, one day a message came: ‘I don’t know whether you really like me or not’. I was flustered and said, ‘What should I do?’ and we became awkward and broke up after that.” The editor who listened to it got angry. The boyfriend should have been more patient at the time.
Is the color of 4minute affected by the leader’s experience in her all-girls schools? It has lead me to think that the man who likes Nam Jihyun will have hard time. It feels like whether you two date or you just have a casual ‘some’ together, you’ll be having a hard time to share a table with her friends. Then how many men will be able to handle her friends? It’s possible that you’ll get questions like, ‘How did you make your move?’ ‘You dated her because of her body, right?’ which will make you drip cold sweat.
“We look like a bunch of bad girls, don't we? It’s really like that actually. We make our male manager sit and play jokes on him. That’s why we don’t have friends from boy groups. Because even when they try to get close and come to hang out in our waiting room, we make them sweat instead. (laughs). We simply joke around. People often say, ‘It’s hard to get close to you girls’. Because we simply have too much fun between ourselves.”
From a man’s perspective, it even makes me want to break them apart. Since it feels like they don’t need a man at all. “Even though we don’t have that many female fans, the number remains stable. There are also fans who have continuously come to see us for 7 years, without change. But it feels like these days male fans are starting to like the girl crush concept too. If I was a man, I think I’d be attracted to that kind of girl. Wouldn't it feel like we could spend time together longer, just like friends? (From a man's perspective:) "It’s boring if it seems like I always need to take care of everything by myself.”
Nam Jihyun’s words are somewhat quite persuasive. They made me suddenly realize that it’ll be alright for her to remain as 4minute’s leader. “I’m planning to go get my puppy and take her to a dog cafe. It maybe that since I’m busy and I can’t play with her often, she’s bad at socializing so I need to bring her to various places.”

Hyuna We celebrate the member's’ birthday every year, and I keep on getting surprised every time we are putting on candles. Yesterday was Jihyun unnie’s birthday and the candles were really a lot. You reached this point without any much trouble or member changes. Earlier Jiyoon said that everyone is honest and blunt so there aren’t many fights, is there any other reason for it?
Sohyun At first we were trying to be considerate of each other and ended up paying attention to a lot of things, however as we spent a long time together, we became comfortable. Actually, I don’t even care what my oppa is doing outside (laugh). It’s possible because there’s trust.
Jiyoon It’s not that we matched together from the start. We fought and clashed and gained understanding (of each other).
Hyuna Now it’s that we don’t even bother to fight (laugh).
Jiyoon Maybe because all of us have brothers, we have easy going personalities.
Instead, a relationship where you can’t have a fight is unhealthy. While spending time together, it looks like you already understand ‘On times like this, we shouldn’t bother her’. Because sometimes there are times when you are sensitive.
Hyuna Right. But it’s fortunate that all of us have different periods. Because there is no time when all of us are sensitive at the same time (laugh).

Hyuna Just like before, we added 4minute’s unique color to naturalness.
Gayoon I think there are various colors in this album. Both the style as well as the music.
Unlike other groups, 4minute always does something different and experiments on things. You need to meet the expectation yet need to be new. Because you shouldn’t become boring. You must have lots of pressure, which part do you focus on?
Jiyoon We wanted to focus on every single thing but since the time doesn’t allow it….

Sohyun We always exclude that (from our focus).
Jiyoon Because we know the reality. Other girl groups are better than us in that part (laugh).
Gayoon More than anything, the most pressure is in the song. Because the previous song ‘Crazy’ was really good, both the song itself and the choreography.
Sohyun We really thought a lot about how to express something different but still within our unique color.
You keep on saying that other girl groups are pretty, but 4minute is pretty too. It’s just because the stage is powerful so your beauty is less shown.

Sohyun Kendall Jenner! She’s pretty, her body is nice too. She has charms even when a girl look at her. When the same sex looks and thinks she’s cool, doesn’t it mean she’s really cool?
Jihyun For me, it’s Jennifer Lopez who doesn’t change since 6 y.o. When I look at her, I’ll automatically say, ‘Awesome, cool’. Her performance is flashy and she acts well too. She’s just downright cool. .

Gayoon I don’t want to show you an imperfect image. We became more senior and there are lots of rookie groups. When we come out after a stage, we want to hear the words, ‘Wow, it’s indeed 4minute!’, we don’t want to make people tilt their heads.
Jiyoon The same for me. Should I say I becoming more cautious? I think it’s about time that we hear something like, ‘They have break off from the idol mold, now they exude an artist feel’.
4minute is still giving a fresh feeling, makes it hard to believe that you’re already on your 8th year. I think it’s simply because of your cool appearance that makes you lead the girl crushes. You are talented. I feel excited watching your harmonious performance. I’m curious how much you practice normally to be able to reach that point.
Jiyoon How much should we answer it? hahaha. We learn and memorize much faster now compared to before. So compared to when we were rookies, our practice time is much shorter now.
Hyuna We’re able to use our time efficiently.
Gayoon Our concept is becoming more distinctive so even the composer can get the feel well when they hear a ‘4minute song’. I think you feel that we’re still fresh because we often do new challenges.
Hyuna I like it, something new.
Jihyun 4minute doesn’t really follow the trend.
Sohyun We’re more of the type who do something that we like until we’re satisfied.
Gayoon Fortunately the members are evenly spread between the early and mid 20s so sometimes what we want and the trend tallies together. We talk about it between ourselves and then tell the company.
Which song can you dance right away even when you just suddenly woke up from sleep?
Jihyun Of course, ‘Hot Issue’.
Jiyoon We sang ‘Hot Issue’ uncountable times.
Gayoon We can even do it without rehearsal.
Jihyun Even though there are other songs that we practiced during trainee days, but we had to sing it as our ending song for 7 years.
Jiyoon We did it at an ice rink, during snowfall, we have sung the song through all hardships.
Personally, I like ‘Muzik’. If someone asked me to explain 4minute in one word, I’ll say ‘Muzik’.
Jihyun It’s the same for us. At that time, many singers wanted that song (laugh). After that point, many electronic songs came out.
Jiyoon It’s doesn’t even feel tacky when you listen to it now.
When you entered 2016 from 2015, what did you have in mind?

You said that you’re goal is to hear the words, ‘Indeed, 4minute’, should we talk about it more clearly? What do you want for people to pay attention to from this album.
Hyuna Someone said this. When she listens to ‘Crazy’ while walking, a confident expression and attitude come out unknowingly. I think it’s nice how other girls our age can sympathize and feel satisfied (with the song). I think this is how you communicate through music. I hope people can release their stress with our song this time too and I wish that there will be another thing that can be sympathized by other people (from the song).
Jihyun As example, people can release their anger by watching our performance. It makes me curious about the title of our song (laugh).
Gayoon It’s not as strong as ‘Crazy’ (laugh). People always pay attention more to 4minute’s performance, but on this album, the voices of the members stand out more. I hope you will think, ‘This member has a really nice voice too’ when you listen to the songs.
Jiyoon For me, I hope people will look at us as an artist through this album. The era when we do something out of order has ended, now we are making our album independently so we feel a great responsibility. Everyone is finding the parts that they have confidence in (to do it). I hope people will see it. “Wow~ 4minute is doing this too? As expected from 4minute!” like that.
Sohyun Just like what Hyuna unnie said, I hope people will be able to feel satisfied and sympathize more. The thing that you can sympathize with from the lyrics is even broader this time. If you feel a distance because of our strong color all these time, hopefully that distance will become shorter through this album.
I just realized, all of 4minute’s songs are all about the mind, you don’t convey much story.
Jiyoon Right. If our songs were all about first person view, it’s not like that this time.
Hyuna You will able to satisfy your thirst from that gap..
My expectation for the new album keeps on rising.

Heo Gayoon asked, “People say this, that everything becomes real after turning 27. Is it really like that?”
Heo Gayoon was concentrating. There was no barrier between her and the camera lens. She stared at the hemline of the Hanbeok skirt for a while and then moved the white cloth again. She was slowly rolling her back and shoulder like a cat, but then she straightened her back again. Despite that, no one told her to act that way, Gayoon was moving like that by her own. Just like water running down between rocks. Time stops in the surroundings of a person who’s focusing. When she turned to look over the photographer’s shoulders and then stared back at the camera lens, we saw her eyes clearly. It was like a night without a moon. At that time, Gayoon smiled slightly. It seemed like she knew what kind of look she gave, and how she did look in the eyes of the the people at the opposite side of the camera.
We heard that you’re filming a movie. The movie in which Park Myungsoo from ‘Infinite Challenge’ participated in as a cameo.
That’s right. It’s a movie called <Father, daughter>. I think we’ll wrap up the filming around the end of January. I act as the female lead Jung Somin’s friend. It’s my first time filming in a movie, and my first time doing a real supporting role and not a cameo. I really wanted to act in a movie, so it was a good opportunity. In a movie filming, the actors, director, and staff communicate to each other in details. It’s extremely detailed, which was really nice. Having meals all together at the filming site was also fun.
People who film in a movie for the first time tend to find it strange when their faces project largely on the cinema screen.
It will be even more so for me. Because I’m appearing with almost no makeup on. It’s my first time since debut! If I need to put on makeup, I get it done by the filming team’s internal staff. I told the director, “I wish people don’t know that it’s me.” It’s rather better if they don’t recognise me at all. I wish people would just remember (my role) as: ‘Don’t know who she is, but the one who acted as Jung Somin’s friend! That was Heo Gayoon?’. That’s all.
What kind of person is Jung Somin’s friend?
My role, itself, is a part of the movie’s content so it’s a little hard to explain it in details. First, she’s a top student. And young. She wears glasses and a school uniform. She’s a seventeen years old girl.
But in reality, the 17 years old Heo Gayoon was most probably not a top student.
Hahaha. That’s right. I was in physical education and art class. I was a girl who liked clothes and dreamed to be a singer. I mostly dressed in outfits that stood out and ones that other people don’t wear. If windbreak jumpers were the trend, then I would never wear a windbreak jumper. If it’s trendy, then I would never do it. That’s why I wasn’t a role model, obviously. I started my trainee life when I was 14. It’s an age in which people can’t really decide on their dream. Whenever someone asked me what is my dream, I always answered with ‘singer’. Since I was really young, I never even once changed my dream. When BoA sunbae-nim was promoting, I was in elementary school, back then I wanted to become a dance singer. Since then, I wanted to both sing and dance.
‘A girl who dreamed to be a singer’, you proved that properly on <Duet Music Festival 8+> that aired on Chuseok.
After that broadcast, many TV PDs and writers told me the same thing. They told me, “We didn’t know that you sing like that.” I’ve always sung like that, but considering that it was always in 4minute performances, it seems that it’s hard to remember me as a main vocal.
On that stage, your hand was trembling while holding the mic.. Were you very nervous?
It wasn’t trembling because I was nervous. It was my first time singing alone on stage on TV. I was very nervous. However, after ending the last high-note well, I was very relieved. I was like, “Ah, I did it. I ended it well.” At that moment, the mic suddenly felt heavier. That’s why my hands were trembling.
Before that, you never sang alone on stage?
Yes. Ah, I once sang the national anthem alone. During a Korea-Qatar soccer match. I wouldn’t forget the lyrics since it was the national anthem, so I didn’t face any difficulties. Nevertheless, since the audience was very huge, I didn’t get a little nervous. I actually have a trauma when it comes to singing alone. Because I made a mistake once in the past.
What kind of mistake?
I once stood on stage to feature in Mario oppa’s song. I was replacing Baek Jiyoung Sunbae-nim. Back then, I forgot the lyrics and made many mistakes. After that, I became afraid of singing alone.
After undergoing a trauma, it’s not easy to completely overcome it again.
Although a trauma is a scar, it’s also a shell we create on our own. After finishing my stage well on <Duet Music Festival 8+>, it felt like I somehow broke away from that shell. I started wanting to sing other songs too. We had a concert in Argentina a while ago, and on that stage, I sang a song called ‘Crazy in Love’. We rearranged the version that was included in the movie ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’. I lately want to sing songs that have the same mood as that one. I also really like a song by ‘The Weeknd’ from the ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ OST. I started getting greedy about singing again. Because It’s not that I want to gain success through singing. But I’m still not sure once it’s comes to reality.
So you’re not a fearless person.
I’m naturally not like that. I really am fearless. I enjoy trying new things. But after making a mistake once or after getting hurt, I become more careful. When I’m not sure about something, I just do it. That’s why I’m filming a movie this time, I don’t know much about it but I’m doing it because it’s fun. If there’s a crying scene, then I’d just briskly cry. After I collect more experiences and become more mature and know more deeply about it, that’s when I will realise how actually difficult it is.
Originally, it’s the most interesting when you get to know about it. And when you know more about it, it will become a given.
That doesn’t mean that singing has become a given for me. Actually, since 4minute is a performance group, I didn’t have much opportunities to sing, and I don’t think that I will in the future either. At first, I really wanted to go solo, but going solo after being used to promoting in a group is actually very difficult. Finding a song that suits me was difficult. The composers are not able to pick a path that suits me; not only because it’s my first solo album ever, but also because I already have a colour that I’ve displayed in group activities. I did receive few songs but many of them didn’t suit me. And so, I naturally have come to lose the attachment I had for singing. Maybe it’s because I only focused on singing since I was very young. Since the only dream I have in life is being a singer.
That’s sad.
All of our members say the same thing whenever I tell them that story. “Why are you like this, it makes us sad. Don’t lose hope yet.” Of course, I do wish to be able to sing. But right now, achieving good results or success is not my goal. I just want to sing. I have a bitter experience with singing. I think it’s not all about being good at singing. People have to take interest in the music they’re listening to, something has to be outstanding in order to catch people’s interest. When I was young, I was very disappointed at this truth. I wanted to pursue music that makes my singing stand out. Now, I’m embracing (that truth). Times have changed.
Are you the type to comply to whatever the company tells you to do?
My thinking has changed during the period from 2012 to 2013. Before that, I wasn’t good at expressing what I wanted to say, I didn’t even let it show on my face. Even if I had something I wanted to do, I used to keep it in. I used to just wait while telling myself that, “One day, they’ll know (what I want), they’ll do it for me.” I used to think that by doing that, I was was being polite. But from 2013 onwards, I started thinking that “this is not right.” I started telling them about everything I wanted to do.
Did you have any motivations or objectives?
Looking back at it, after debuting in 2009 and for 3 years straight, it felt like I was standing still. 4minute was getting bigger. But I was just as is. I thought that at this rate, I will keep shrinking slowly. And that’s why I started speaking out. “I have so much interest in fashion. Please help me out,” ever since I told them that I started shooting pictorials and whatnot.
A year ago, how did you feel when you turned 26?
That I’m no longer 25. That I passed my prime age. (laughs) Men in my surroundings tell me “You really passed your prime now. You’re in your late 20s now,” I hear that really a lot.
Men always say that.
My male acquaintances told me that I shouldn’t act cute or make any mistakes. They told me that this age is not an age in which I can laugh it out when I make a mistake or be tolerated because I’m young anymore. But it’s not necessarily because of what they said, even during 4minute’s ‘Crazy’ activities, when we went to music shows, we found that we’re seniors to all of the teams out there. Our juniors are really young. That’s why I started feeling this way. That I’m no longer young, that I should act properly. That now, my actions won’t be overlooked kindly. I should do well.
Already? You can tell which of your actions are viewed positively and which are viewed negatively?
At least since last year, when I was 25, I think I started knowing it all. My thinking about which (actions) are good and which are bad has changed. During the movie filming, I focused on how I did the lightest makeup since my debut. (laughs) Although, of course, I had to make my makeup light since it’s needed for my role, but I, myself, also liked that pleasantly simple look. In the past, I was usually stuck in the stereotype of ‘beauty’ that people had, but now I’m not.
After your movie filming, you would be preparing for 4minute’s new album.
Our new album will be released around the end of February. I’m only focusing on our album preparations and my movie filming. Before this, I used to never go out of my house during breaks. But nowadays, I enjoy going to the bookstore. I read travel essays the most. Since I really want to travel but I can’t, I satisfy myself with books instead. I recently read <Paris Romance> and <Quiet Excitement>. <Quiet Excitement> is a book released by the 23 year old young writer, Yoo Jihye, in which she complies the instagram posts she made during her Europe trip. While reading that, I started wanting to give it a try and make a book once. I also like taking pictures and I write diaries every day. I also start to think like this: “What did I do when I was 23? I don’t think I did anything. But this person wrote a book.” It makes me realise how the 23 years old me and the 27 years old me are definitely different.
Many people who are around your age are still looking for their own path. But for you, you already found your own path to an extent, so doesn’t that mean you already achieved many things?
I guess I’m still young. I can’t help but look at the person in front of me. I look at the people in front of me and then think, “I have to achieve at least that much.”
What kind of person do you want to become in your twenty seventh year?
I want to become a person who makes someone keep wanting to see me. A person who always makes people curious about her.

FIRSTLOOK: Covernat’s collaboration with Heo Gayoon who’s coming out as a new hipster. It’s amazing?
COVERNAT: After only having presented menswear up till now, getting to work with a visualist like Gayoon has been a great honour for us. There were already so many female consumers purchasing male products, so we were in urgent need for a female section. We had many worries regarding what kind of items we should present, but everything was wrapped up smoothly thanks to Gayoon.
FIRSTLOOK: What’s the reason Covernat chose Heo Gayoon as their Muse for the female collection?
COVERNAT: What person we choose wasn’t the most important thing to us. It didn’t matter to us how pretty or how famous the person we choose is. Although Gayoon IS a very pretty and famous person, what mattered more to us is how stylish she is and how much she likes fashion. She knows how to interpret today’s trendy fashion her own way. Not only trends, but her understanding about classics was also outstanding. After the industrial revolution, Covernat focused on newly reinterpreting menswear, like workwear, military wear, and retro wear. We thought that our Muse should be a person with an understanding about clothes in that regard.
FIRSTLOOK: Gayoon, you really have so much interest in style. We heard that you personally decided on the outfits and concept for your last album.
HEO GA YOON: I know well what kind of clothes suit me the best. I don’t want to consume the trend the exact way other people do. Rather than wanting to show a new style to me every time, I just want to show a style in which I wear comfortable clothes that suit me. That style to me probably already showed before.
FIRSTLOOK: What is the biggest characteristic of Covernat and Heo Gayoon’s collaboration?
COVERNAT: New colour! The colours Covernat has presented up till now were colours like navy, grey, and beige. We presented colours that weren’t necessarily special but were suitable for everyone. But for the women collection, we hope to present a newer and lovelier colour. Also, the more fitting silhouette could be said as a difference (between the men and women collections).
FIRSTLOOK: Can we say that you haven’t deviated from the established brand image of Covernat?
COVERNAT: We don’t want to throw in feminine details (to our products) for the female consumers. There’s no need for us to defame the established brand image of Covernat. There are already so many female consumers who like the brand Covernat the way it is. Although It’s a collaboration with Heo Gayoon, Gayoon’s image is still not limited to feminine only. She has the image of knowing how to interpret any piece of clothing in her own way, so we didn’t really want to change Covernat’s character.
FIRSTLOOK: What is the most Covernat-ish item you have? And which woman fits Covernat’s image the most?
COVERNAT: We’re not sure about who’s the women that fits Covernat the most. We never thought of it. We believe everyone looks cool and clean even without necessarily dressing up. Just like how there’s a beautiful and lovely side to every woman. The most Covernat-ish items are undoubtedly items like sweatshirts, winter parka, and eco-bags. We believe that even those who don’t know Covernat have seen these items at least once before. Since we have a familiar and comfortable style established.
FIRSTLOOK: We feel that you’re extremely classical.
COVERNAT: That’s exactly what we want. Things that don’t easily change with time, (items) that are always comfortable regardless of time.
HEO GA YOON: (Items) that are comfortable and fit well, and don’t direct attention to the clothes only. That’s what style is really about. Just like the items made by Covernat and Heo Gayoon.

The following interview is from Dazed Korea’s September 2015 issue.
Kwon Sohyun
Summer is ending. Have you gone on any vacations?
After 4minute’s last album promotions were over, Jiyoon, Gayoon, and I went to a Thai island called ‘Krabi’. We really like water games, we heartily enjoyed a variety of leisure like snorkelling, skin scuba, etc. We had fun.
You’re recently filming a reality program, ‘4minute’s Video’. Watching that, we saw that you’re pretty skilled at housework? Seeing how you sweep and clean the house everyday, you looked like a so-called ‘homebody’ (laughs).
That’s right. It might be because I’m used to watching my mom clean carefully since I was young. Also, whenever my room gets messy, my mom would always tell me “It looks like a pigsty”, so even now whenever my room gets messy, I would feel like I’m in a pigsty for real (laughs). I think the environment we grow up in as kids is extremely important.
Tell us some of your ‘wisdom of life’ that you got to discover by yourself through living.
I actually learned most of them from my mother instead of discovering them by my own. Storing coffee bean powder in the fridge to remove the smell of food, spraying disinfectants on the toilet to prevent it form getting dirty, mixing beer and vinegar together and putting them in one place when there are many flies, I learned these through my mom’s lifestyle and through looking them up myself.
Although you’re 22 and an adult now, you spent most of your (idol) activity period as a minor. You’re also the youngest in your team. Having to get rid of the young and cute side to you while promoting in 4minute, who have a ‘fierce image’, where there times where you felt like it was a homework to you?
It’s rather the opposite, I was more stressed since I’m not cute. It’s probably because I debuted when I was young but I’ve matured quickly, and showing the cute image that people want from me was rather harder. Like aegyo and cute expressions. However, it’s true that the public have only viewed me as cute since I was the magnae. That’s why I really put in so much effort before our ‘Crazy’ activities.
While promoting as 4minute for the past 6 years, what has changed the most to Sohyun?
I became so much brighter. At the same time, I started to think a lot about myself. I always care about what others think and about how they feel first, so I’m never the subject of the relationship. While promoting together with 4minute unnies, I have come to learn that ‘It’s my life, I am the one living it’.
Put 4minute aside, what’s your personal goal?
I first started my celebrity activities with acting. So I do have a goal related to acting. However, it seems that there’s always a negative viewpoint on idols acting so I am cautious. I want to work hard and overcome that part. I also want to study abroad one day, but right now 4minute is the most important to me.
Heo Gayoon
Heo Gayoon dresses so well. You’re consistently showing your interests in fashion. Through <Style Log 2014> and whatnot, your fashionista image has only gotten stronger. Don’t you sometimes feel pressured over the public’s expectations? Since It’s hard to dress prettily all the time.
I do pay more attention for my airport fashion and my fashion on the way to work. However, it’s not a burden to me. I actually don’t dress up prettily all the time either (laughs). On days where I’m not in the mood to dress up or when we don’t have any stage schedules, I would dress up very comfortably and shock people around me, it’s to the point where my members would go “Really daebak!” ironically. I just dress up according to the style I want at the time. For example, my pigtails and hairband + wide pants style during ‘Crazy’ activities, I know that it’s disliked by most men but I still wear it because I like it.
You were in charge of the album’s visual directing during ‘Crazy’ activities. Is there any new challenge related to fashion that you personally want to try?
I’d like to do a collaboration project with local fashion designers or a local brand. I’m not only saying this lightly, I really want to be fully involved in that project. Although I can’t reveal much about it as of now, I recently worked on a collaboration project for 4minute with a foreign brand popular in Korea. Since I personally took part in the designs, I feel very fondly towards it. Because I can meet with local brands and communicate easily with them, I think I’ll be able to show great work.
Do you have a photographer or a stylist that you like?
It’s hard to pick just one. I believe that I should try and experience more things while I’m still young. That’s why I always worked together with the many photographers and stylists whenever I had a photoshoot. The things I learned while doing so were of so much help to me when I was working on 4minute’s album jacket.
What is the thing that caught your interest the most lately? It doesn’t have to be related to fashion.
Travels. Lately, I’ve been wanting to go on a trip somewhere very much.
Speaking of travels, during the summer holiday season pictures of you were used every time on “diet motivation pictures” posts.
Haha. Knowing that a lot of people get motivated to diet by looking at me is motivating for me too. That means I must not become careless.
4minute is already in its 6th year. Is there any burden to being a six year old idol group?
The burden doesn’t particularly increase as time passes. Until now, we’ve tried out a variety of music genres and fashion styles through each albums we’ve released. Thanks to that, we found the colour that suits us best a little more each time, I believe. Thinking about what we’ll be showing off next, as opposed to the starting point of our debut days, I prefer the now we’ve come to know more.
Jeon Jiyoon
We heard that you gave a song to a famous Thai actor before. Looking back, you did the writing and composing under the name ‘Jenyer’ during your activities as 2Yoon with Gayoon.
Although I worked hard as well, I think a good piece of work came out because that Thai friend put in so much efforts. If I have the greed as a songwriter then I can write a ‘good song’ regardless of what genre it is. I’ve been writing rap lately because I like hip hop; however, I yet don’t have a single song that’s completed (laughs).
What’s the reason behind you using a pseudonym during your 2Yoon activities?
I was hoping for a more objective evaluation. I thought that me composing the song could be both a disadvantage and an advantage. I was just wishing that people could listen to the song without any bias.
Do you write songs often?
I almost write everyday. The feeling of the song differs depending on my mood that day. I lately keep writing songs like a habit.
Compared to the other members, you don’t have much personal activities. Is there any new field that you want to take challenge in?
I want to try solo activities. Although I don’t have any concrete plants yet, I do have the greed to stand on stage by my own for once, regardless of what kind of concept or music.
When 4minute goes on TV stations now, there are more juniors than seniors. How does that feel?
The first thing that comes to mind is ‘I am so old now’.
Can you sum up in one word the 6 years you’ve been active under 4minute?
Lactobacillus. It’s a good thing (laughs).
Nam Jihyun
While talking about your debut days on the reality program, ‘4minute’s Video’, you said “I think I’ll tear up,” as well as “those days were good days.” From then and now, what has changed the most about Jihyun?
Although I changed externally as well, I think I changed internally the most. First, what I felt the most is that in the past I used to have the greed that ‘I can do anything’. Should I say it was overload. Lately, I have come to know exactly what’s good for me. I also have learned how to not expect a lot from other people. I think this is a positive thing.
Not so long ago, you uploaded on SNS a ‘Haduri’ picture from 11 years ago (laughs).
Not so long ago, I contacted my middle school friend and got to meet with her for the first time in 11 years. We were seeing each other for the first time in so long, but we were so glad to see each other just as if we last met a couple of days ago. My friend sent me that picture, I wanted it to be remembered for a long time and hence uploaded it.
What’s the thing you’ve been into the most lately?
I’ve lately grown interested in many things. What I’ve been enjoying the most lately is ballet and learning Chinese. And beauty as well. I became more interested in cosmetics, beauty methods, etc.
Amongst the places you visited recently, is there any place that left a deep impression?
China. I didn’t think much about China before, but after visiting it this time, it was really a big and interesting country.
Even in a generation that’s overflowing with girl groups, 4minute have established their own independent territory. What is the secret behind that?
It’s teamwork and new ideas. First, if we had poor teamwork then we wouldn’t have been able to promote for this long. Also, our efforts to come up with a new concept each time have made us pursue different ways than other teams, and made us develop our own colour.
It’s already September. Is there any goal that you want to reach this year?
Although this is a vague (answer), but it’s showing a good side to me through activities. Slowly and carefully preparing for the future.
Kim Hyuna
We heard that you’re releasing a solo album before 4minute’s comeback. Through ‘Red’, Hyuna has reached her maximum sexiness and maturity. What are you focusing on for this album, and what do you wish for the public to expect from you?
First, being able to deliver a song of a yet different genre than ‘Red’ makes me excited. Just like always, the song was created in the way I can express the best. I’m planning to show a performance that perfectly expresses the song, I hope people can anticipate that.
Hyuna is always bold. It’s not easy for a female singer to wear heals on stage and dance the ‘monkey dance’, like in your ‘Red’ promotions. Are there times where you become timid?
I wouldn't say timid, but the period right before releasing the album is actually the most burdensome period to me. It’s also the period where expectations are too high. After ‘Red’ in 2014, I’m meeting you as a solo for the first time in a while. Having been preparing for so long, I tried to come out with something new. I always have fears about that, but I think I have to challenge myself in order to be satisfied. Me and my members as well. That’s why we hold lots of meetings before our promotions.
Right now, ahead of your comeback, what is your biggest distress?
Rather than saying distress, there are things that make me anxious too. I worry about whether I will be able to share the things I like with other people. I want to work hard with the people who believe in me. If I have anything to wish for, it’s working happily all throughout this time’s promotions without having anyone hurting.
You’re filming the reality program <4minute’s Video> right now. Up to what percentage do you think you can be truthful in front of the camera?
It’s hard to express in precentage. However, what’s I’m certain of is that I’m the most natural when I’m with the members.
How much do you think you approached your personal goal?
I haven’t set any goals so I can’t give an accurate answer; however, I just want to spend everyday with energy, while being busier today than yesterday.

[INTERVIEW] Jihyun & Gayoon for STAR1 8/2015 [1/3]
4minute. Establishing themselves as the sensation through fierce and fancy performances with "What's Your Name?" and "Crazy" among each of their releases. However, offstage, they are ordinary women in their 20s who enjoy cracking jokes about their lives and who take an interest in fashion and love stories. Meet Nam Jihyun (25) and Heo Gayoon (25) 's pretense free,100% real talk.
Q: During the five weeks of the "Crazy" promotions you did fan support projects for about 23 times. You were the real "fools for fans" (fans' babo). Looking at the gifts you gave fans, your sense was no joke: yellow dust masks, rice cake soups, vitamins..etc. Whose idea was it?
Gayoon: We planned it together with our agency's marketing team. Before the "Crazy" album got released, we were thinking about what we could do for our fans and after debating, that was the event we planned all together.
Jihyun: We discussed and decided on the list of gifts [to give fans] between our members. For example, if we follow the lyrics to "Crazy," 'the night [밤(bam): night] is ending' we'd gift fans (맛밤: matbam) roasted chesnut snacks. If we take this part of the song "Don't ask about anything [묻지 말고] (malgo): don't ask" we'd replace 말고 (malgo) by mango and gift fans mango yoghurt.
Q: Did you pass the gifts to fans yourselves?
Jihyun: We gave chocolates to fans ourselves only on Valentine's Day. For the other music programs, our agency's staff would pass gifts to fans after the attendance check.
Q: If we think about 4minute, the image of unnies that can have fun at clubs comes to mind. There's also the fact that "Crazy" was first revealed at a club. It seems that the 4minute members would really have fun between themselves when hanging out at clubs.
Jihyun: When "What's Your Name?" became a hot issue at clubs, that was the first time for us to go to one. After that, we held dinners at clubs and also went sometimes when we were overseas to attend schedules.
Q: When going to clubs, which member would have the most fun?
Gayoon: Our maknae Sohyun would have the most fun. A while ago, we went to a club in Thailand. Sohyun was underage at the time so she'd stay alone in her hotel room. I heard afterwards that she felt particularly lonely at the time and would listen to IU's "Alone In The Room" and feel sad. After that, when she turned legal, we'd go to clubs all together; she really knows how to have fun. She got to [enjoy herself] to her heart's content for all the times she couldn't go, it seems. (laughs)
Q: This time you've been sticking to the "fierce unnies" image. And that concept has been more than well received by the public as well. Even so, is there a concept that you would like to try out, one which "only 4minute is able to portray?"
Jihyun: I feel like we won't be able to "take off" the fierce concept entirely. Our next album is coming out during the second half of the year, so I'd like us to try out yet another fierce concept that is different from the ones we've done before. This time around, we are researching a lot to create a new and fresh fierce image.
Gayoon: As for me, I want us to exude fierceness just by standing on stage, even when we're not doing anything. I want us to give off a fierce charisma even just through our hairstyles and make-up looks. Is that too scary? (laughs)
Q: Then, among the members who is the real "fierce unnie"?
Gayoon: In real life there's no fierce unnie among our members. There's no fierce moments either.
Jihyun: Honestly, our members aren't fierce at all. They are just like girls their age. It's just that they use the anger they feel everyday and release it all on stage. (laughs)
Q: On the contrary, who is the most feminine member?
Jihyun: You mean aside from me? (laughs) Still, among the members I believe I'm the most feminine. These days, I've been addicted to cooking, there's something a bit feminine about my looks too. Although I probably can't compare with other girl group members' femininity.
Gayoon: Since all of us have brothers only, we're wild and easygoing. Despite that, Jihyun unnie is feminine, overall. But she only is to a certain extent. To be honest, unnie, if you were anywhere else you wouldn't be perceived as someone feminine. (laughs)
Q: The 4minute members' involvement in making albums has been heavier each time. Taking your previous album for example, we've heard that the members had personally written songs and worked on the choreography as well.
Gayoon: That's right. If I'm involved in the album, my affection and satisfaction towards it would only grow greater. In the past, we would follow the sketch the company would have designed for us and move accordingly. Now, however, we make our albums our own way through the directions we want to take. That way, we can check the response directly by ourselves and get feedback on that right away.
Q: What would you say are 4minute's strengths as a girl group?
Jihyun: That we're not pretty? Frankly, since we're not the pretty kind as a girl group, I believe we'll be able to last for a long time. And even if we get into a dating scandal, I don't think it would be an issue. The fact that people don't take an interest in us apart from our music is a blessing in disguise. I trust that we're able to fully dedicate ourselves to our music even more thanks to that.
Gayoon: If I mention teamwork, it's already obvious now. Then, challenging ourselves in new ways? That is, I believe, our strength.
Q: Who are 4minute's rivals?
Jihyun: We've never thought of any group in particular as our rivals before. There's been an increase in girl groups these days, that fact alone is enough to make us anxious. All the more reason for us to find our own colour.
Gayoon: Frankly speaking, there's only very few girl groups which concept overlaps with ours.
Q: You are leading idols already into their 6th year since debut. What is the driving force that kept the team together until now?
Gayoon: I think that since 4minute has never once completely experienced failure nor huge success, we're able to band together and depend on each other even more. When one does too well for oneself, it's possible to slack off or become arrogant. Since it's not the case for us, I think that's why we're able to work even harder. Moreover, because we release one album a year, we know the value of that one album and how precious it is to us, so we're more earnest.
Jihyun: Someone once said to us before: Do you know why the relationship between you all is so good? Because you've never truly hit a big success. After hearing that, I thought what they said sounded right. (laughs)
Q: There's quite a lot of celebrities under Cube Entertainment. Is there a chance you would date someone among them?
Jihyun: Unless someone I fancy joins our company, there's no chance for that to happen, ever. (laughs)
Gayoon: That bud has long since died. Since we've know each other for about 7-8 years now, we know everything about each other (literally: "we know what each other looked like 8 years ago) so there's no way we'd develop romantic feelings for each other.
Q: But you never know when it comes to matters of the heart.
Jihyun: Although that is true, I'm definitely sure about that [not falling for labelmates.]
Gayoon: Puhahahaha. Ah...let's say we'd want to "get into a some*" , in order for feelings to develop we'd first have to see each other's face often, these days everyone is busy so we don't have time to even see each other.
* casually feeling a little something for someone in the early stage of a friendly relationship, feeling like the affinity between two friends could develop into love
Q: Then, when did you last date?
Gayoon: It's been a while since I've done anything related to dating. Still, it's not that I've never dated. I have before. You could say I haven't dated since we debuted, it wouldn't make a difference. The people I meet with are our stylist, my members, and parents? That's it. Honestly, I find the whole idea of someone loving me a bit burdensome.
Jihyun: The members and I are really worried about Gayoon's love cells dying. If you knew about Gayoon's daily life, you'd say it's quite boring. Why does she live in a dull way at such a beautiful age? Our maknae, Sohyun, worries about the way Gayoon lives her life the most.
Gayoon: Ah, no, don't be. I'm happy, now! (laughs)
Q: From what I've heard, Jihyun is quite popular among idols.
Jihyun: That's a misunderstanding, really. When I filmed for tvN's "The Romantic & Idol" the idols I filmed the show with had the impression we were the kind of people that were very cold. After meeting us, they knew it wasn't the case and our members said to them "let's be friends" and that's how the rumour started. As a 4minute member, I haven't been asked out often. I haven't dated a lot either.
