Observations #3, #4, and #5
So far on campus today I have seen:
A grown man wearing a kilt. A flat black Lamborghini. An icecream truck parked at the stop sign of a very busy intersection.
This is a fun Monday.
Out for a walk with #cometthedog. Thinking about life and the loss of it. The world lost my grandmother yesterday. She was a beautiful, devoted, faithful, sassy woman. She raised my dad and his 3 brother on her own. She always has faith in the purpose of this life and the joy that comes with the next one. I'm glad that she's fully able to enjoy the later. But my heart hurts for those of us who will miss her.
My hard working man. He is Love. He always #protects. Always #trust. Always #hope. Always #preservers. (1 Cor 13:7). I know... I'm Sappy McSapperson today. Judge me.
Step off (and outside of) the soap box.
Geez louise. Let's all step back and think outside of the box for a second.
I've been hearing nothing but talk of all the fast food workers striking and minimum wage all morning.
But what I don't think people understand is:
All the executives of them companies who make crazy $$$...the pay increase will not be coming out of their pocket. They're not taking a pay-cut here. There will not be any redistribution of money so that the companies pay employees more and executives less.
So, what's going to happen?....
The price of buying their product is going to go up and/or the price of producing their product is going to go down. Which means they will:
Cut all the excess weight they have. Extra staff members. The elderly population who have been there for years who just aren't up to speed. And they'll take as many jobs as possible that PEOPLE are doing and replace them with MACHINES who will never ask for a pay increase.
Quality (what little there was in the fast food market) of the products will go down. If they were paying an extra 0.05 a pound for the better meat, they certainly won't be doing that anymore. They're going with the cheapest grade available to compensate for funds spent on payroll. And they'll probably all switch to the cheapest packaging for their bad quality products, which, you can bet, will be horrible for the environment.
Prices of product will rise. Now we have poor quality product and we'll be paying more for it. The meal that use to cost $4.59 will now be $6.29 and it will be even worse for you (and the environment) than it was to begin with. And that's if people choose to still buy fast food products. It's only a matter of time before people start seeing that it's worse quality for more money and stop buying it all together. Will we all still use the drive thru occasionally, of course. But the frequency will definitely go down with higher prices.
In the end...the corporate executives are still going to make their fortunes. The people who are going to end up paying for the pay raise are the customers, not the employers. I'm not saying that fast food employees don't deserve the raise, but it's going to come at a higher cost than what the rallies outside of fast food restaurants realize.

Bailed Acceptance Speech.
So I read this today... Because like I said a couple weeks ago....I'm reading more these days....Sorta....
I was reading about Samuel. Specifically when he told Saul (the kid just out looking for donkeys) that he was going to be king.
**Insert the whole back story here** (I'll post the link incase you're trying to read so you can be smarter too.)
But what really caught my eye/heart about it was this: Samuel is about tell all these people that Saul is the new King. The same people who just a second ago were like,
"Whoa..Saul's gunna be king? Can just anyone be a prophet now?"
So when Samuel is making the announcement Saul takes off. Like Tony Stark before his acceptance speech. (You're welcome for the Marvel reference)
So all the people go to look for him. The people ask the Lord where Saul is. And the Lord answers, "He's hiding among the baggage." When they found him, it says they brought him out and he stood head and shoulders about anyone else. WHAT?! Two things that stuck out to me.
1) You'll never be king of your future if you're hiding in your baggage. Will. Not. Happen. If you haven't let go of your old stuff, you can't take on the new responsibility God has for you. You can't be the king and the bell boy.
Sidenote: Saul was a big guy. He wouldn't have had enough bags alone to hide himself. He was using other peoples too. Don't let other peoples baggage keep you from God's plan.
2) When Saul came out, he stood head and shoulders above everyone else. That didn't mean he was better than anyone. But when he left his baggage behind, he was able to stand up tall - head and shoulders high. Not because of anything he could do...but because God had anointed him for his new position. (Eventually pride did get to Saul. Example A: what not to do.)
Be there. Make the speech. Don't hid in the baggage. Head and shoulders held high Move forward in the call He has for you.

Whatever you find yourself doing, give it all that you have. Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all that you are.
Smart people
I heard it said recently that smart people read.
And I realized then that I would always be stupid.
I never read. Anytime I sit down with a book to read....I fall asleep. Maybe that's my problem. I'm too "GO, GO, GO!!" to sit down long enough to finish a book. I'm working on it though. I just got a book and, dag nabit, I'm going to finish it.
I did read a quote form Hemingway today, "Never confuse movement with action." I want to blog about that soon. It will probably be the next blogrant that I do. Not today though. Not today.
"Our dreams don't die, we just trade them for comfort of living."

The "M" word
Okay. So I am really really over hearing about Miley Cyrus.
And more than that. I'm really over other peoples opinions of her. But since only 2 people even know my blog exists...I will vent my frustrations here and assume they won't bother anyone else who may feel the same way I do.
Why am I disappointed in the whole situation, you nobody may ask?
Because....
A) Yes she's a role model...blah blah blah....kids look up to her...blah blah blah..social responsibility...blah blah BLAH..
and more significantly,
B) The whole response, especially from grown women (some with, some without children) is "OMG, I would never let my daughter turn out that way.".."Dear daughter, don't be a Miley."..."10 ways to make sure you're not raising a Miley Cyrus."
And my only response to those people can be: How about instead of drilling discontent at her actions into the heads of children...we fill them with a loving compassion that helps them reach out to the Mileys of their generation?
Instead of pointing out how wrong or inappropriate she was...why don't we teach our daughters to look at the acts of others (whether it be dancing on a VMA stage or the sound of a girl throwing up in a middle school bathroom stall) as an earnest desire for someone to reach out to them. For who they are. No matter how bright or dark their past has been.
Because let's just be honest. Anyone throwing around claims about their daughter is living in serious denial.
Mom, your daughter will faulter. She will sin. She will be shamed. She will be embarrassed of the choices that she made. Whether it be sexual or otherwise.
So who do you want to be there when you daughter needs love and guidance the most? A room full of girls who YOU taught to shun behaviors you've deemed inappropriate?
Or will you raise the daughter who walks over to her when the world has kicked her legs out from under her, wipe off the lies they've spit at her and will show her some compassion?
Because let's just be honest. I've done my own VMA dance. And so have you.
We don't need less Mileys. We need less daughters being taught that some actions warrant grace and other don't. Fewer daughter that believe that you abandon people when they do things you don't like. We need more daughters being taught to love unconditionally.
So one day, when Annabelle comes along, you can bet we'll teach her this:
The greatest of these is love. And you do all that you can every day that you have to honor that kind of love.

I'm realizing that I get the most frustrated with myself when I forget that
I am a work in progress.
If I could get it all figured out in one sitting, God would have made life all daytime and no nights. So we could sit up and work until we got the puzzle all put together.
I have to remember that. I have to know that it's okay to not have all the answers. And that working on it is okay.....as long as I'm making progress.
Excuse me...
When in the next train out of Sick-Town?
Because I would like to get on it.
It's that time of year again. The registration season is upon us and the chaos has begun.
Honestly though.... I like when work is this way. I love the #hustle.
Hmmm....What to do today?
"Learn to do good. Seek justice. Help the oppressed. Defend the cause of the orphans Fight for the rights of widows." (Isa. 1:17)
That should keep me busy.
