It’s hard to discover new tracks. Youtube does an okay job at showing you what’s trending, usually a Taylor Swift song with 500 million views... thanks Youtube, and services like Spotify, Songza and Pandora are pretty hit or miss. The bottom line is recommending music is fucking hard. That’s why you usually have to do some searching, or trust your one friend who’s really on their game.

We simply want to show you what 5byers are listening to, and what new songs we think are worth a listen or two. We’ll try and show you songs you haven’t heard yet, and hopefully you can take away some quality listening every week.

The New 5by - A Video App Like No Other

This 'Version 2' of our app will be released on October 23rd, 2014. This isn't our first release of a mobile application, nor will it be our last, but it's definitely been the most fascinating journey, to say the least. The sheer number of hours put into this thing is unfathomable. A 90 hour work week was not uncommon for the team, and that's only the beginning. The amount of thought, learnings and hard work put into this new product is quite impressive, and although the product is still not quite where we want it to be, it is somewhere pretty incredible. New features, a new design and so much more are all here to use and enjoy, all free of charge.

                                        The 5by app still does what it's known for best, shows you the most amazing videos the Internet has to offer. This, will never change. We noticed so many of our awesome users (we love you) would share these videos, but through SMS, so what did we do? We introduced an in-app sharing feature, that allows users to start convos around videos they love, with the people they think will love them too.

Simple. When you watch a video, if it's any good, chances are it will remind you of someone else you know, who would appreciate it too. Maybe you have a friend who's obsessed with cats, or loves nothing more than new technology. The beauty about this new version of the app is that there's videos for everyone, and now, an incredibly easy way for friends to share with other friends, and enjoy these videos, together. 

This new app is essentially a new, low-friction social video platform. Easy to just tune everything out, kick back, and enjoy the best videos of the week, or, get really involved, interact, add friends, share videos with them, add silly captions, and chat about those videos. Both are fun, one being more laid-back, the other, more immersive and interactive. Really, they go hand-in-hand, because sooner than you think, you'll find a video you just have to share with a friend, and the 2 tap process will be right there at your fingertips.

5by Presents: Shark Week

It's that time of the year again, folks. Shark Week is one of mankind's most exciting TV inventions, bringing together all sorts of people to bond over one thing: sharks (duh). Whether you're terrified of them, love them, or just like to be in on whatever's trending these days, you've probably been spending a decent amount of time watching Discovery Channel and freaking out to your friends about that crazy shark attack that you saw last night. 

To keep you updated on all things shark, we've created our very own 5by Shark Week Channel, featuring these animals in all their glory as opposed to the more negative, predatory light mass media typically sheds on them (according to National Geographic you actually have a 1 in 63 chance in dying from the flu and a 1 in 3,700,000 chance in dying from a shark attack in your lifetime). #TBT Episode 3: Some Things Never Change

There's nothing quite like watching an old TV show or movie and recognizing a present day A-list celeb, especially in the midst of their awkward phase. The one-season phenomenon "Freaks and Geeks" is laden with such sightings, including teenage Jason Segal and Seth Rogen and an early twenties James Franco (pre-scandalous Instagram photos and grungy facial hair). Not only is this show fondly looked back upon as the beginning of these stars' careers, but it also highlights the true struggles and growing pains of high school in a hilariously stereotypical-but-still-original type of way.

We decided to dig one step further and managed to uncover Seth Rogen's audition tape. Though his stoner-esque persona isn't necessarily a huge surprise given his current roles and reputation, it's still nonetheless relieving to hear 17-year-old Rogen boast about his future life endeavors involving "the finest reefer the Midwest has ever grown". We've said too much--take a look at the epic audition for yourself.

#TBT Episode 2: Because It's Outkast

Whether you're a hip-hop enthusiast or not (or nah?), you honestly can't deny that Outkast is one of the most legendary duos to grace rap music. Between Andre 3000's wacky style and Big Boi's politically aware lines, these two Atlanta natives are still major icons in the music scene, as illustrated by the huge crowds they've drawn at nearly every music festival this year. I mean let's be real, you've probably been living under a rock if you don't know the words to "Hey Ya" or "Ms. Jackson". 

In honor of these guys, we've dedicated today's #TBT to one of their earlier but still epic videos, Bombs Over Baghdad. The video combines everything you'd expect in a rap video: fast cars, dancing girls, and plenty of bling and swag to go around. The best part? It's filmed in a psychedelic world where the grass is purple, the roads are green, and girls dance in bikinis next to chimpanzees, perfectly correlating with the crazy upbeat tune of the song. #TBT Episode 1: From Yeezy to...Yeezus?

Here at 5by, our love for videos stems far beyond what’s “viral” or “new” these days, especially considering how much video content is popping up all over the internet every minute of everyday. We’ve decided to take it back to the classics through our new blog series, cleverly named Throwback Thursday, and our goal is to satisfy all of your virtual #TBT needs.

For this week, we thought we’d honor the early days of the iconic artist Kanye West with his first hit, “Through the Wire”, which won Video of the Year at the 2004 Source Hip Hop Awards. Struggling to land a record deal due to his lack of a “gangster” persona, ‘Ye fell asleep at the wheel back in ’02, resulting in a fatal car accident and facial reconstructive surgery. His jaw was wired shut, and despite the haters (and the trauma) he recorded this song, literally through the wire...from that point on, the rest of his career is history. Pretty inspiring stuff.

From the old school vibe of the beat to its use of Polaroid photos and bulletin boards to tell his story, this video takes us back to the glory days of life pre-smart phones, Instagram, and (arguably) Yeezy’s absurd ego. Sit back, relax, and relive the early 2000’s through this epic music video.
