The actors do brilliantly with relatively little in the way of dialogue. The cast of unknowns are compelling, with Harry Styles handed some of the more dramatic scenes which he handles with skill beyond his experience. He can definitely act.

The inclusion of the One Direction singer looked from a distance the worst type of publicity hungry casting. But if you didn’t know who the was, you‘d probably be picking him out as an actor to watch in the future.
There isn’t, for instance, the commercially fortunate presence of an American face among the cast – although there is a bright, convicted, and unexpectedly not-at-all-jarring performance from Harry Styles, formerly of the boy band One Direction, as one of the young soldiers on the beach.
A true ensemble piece, Dunkirk’s cast may have little dialogue, and limited individual screen time, but all are (pardon the pun) uniformly excellent – yes, cynics, even that One Direction bloke.
And Harry Styles? It may reek of stunt casting, but if it was, it has completely paid off. Though also not given all that many lines, he’s sympathetic and charismatic as a young soldier clinging on to life in the worst of circumstances.
Styles, with Whitehead, deftly conveys the absolute luxury of being warm, dry, and not being shot at or drowned. Indeed, one of the many tear-jerking moments comes from Styles’ simple but incomparable joy at being given a beer (there’s context…).

When I heard that Harry Styles was in this movie I figured that it was just a clever ploy to pull in more ticket sales but I absolutely stand corrected. He put on an authentic, honest performance that was very impressive.
There’s a great scene in a boat where you see how he is affected by desperation and sheer terror that really sold it for me, his performance was extremely consistent.
The fate of a small bunch of Tommies unfolds over a week. One of them is played, splendidly, by Styles, who reportedly auditioned without Nolan having the slightest idea who he was, but whose presence should tempt youngsters in to see this film.
And yes for the record Styles can act, unlike David Beckham’s embarrassing attempt in King Arthur.
Eyebrows were raised when the world learned that One Directioner Harry Styles was cast in the movie. The good news is, he’s great! The performances are excellent all around.

On the ground, yes, Harry Styles can act. The former One Direction singer is quite good as one of three soldiers Nolan concentrates on, as they form an almost wordless bond, brought together by their desire to stay alive but keep running into obstacles that make that more difficult.

None of the cast are the lead, and there are no star roles. Just an ensemble of excellent workers giving it everything. The only name on the poster that might give you pause for concern is boy-band singer Harry Styles, but he’s absolutely fine. A film of this stature doesn’t need an Ed-Sheeran-around-the-campfire celebrity cameo. Styles got the job on merit. Just like everyone else here.

In his first major film role, One Direction’s Harry Stylesshows tremendous promise. His Alex makes one of the film’s most apparent transformations, dipping in and out of horror, desperation, and anguish.
Not content to merely lavish every inch of the IMAX screen with his perfect jawline and swoon-inducing puppy dog eyes, but also acquitting himself competently in a cast that includes Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance, and Cillian Murphy, Styles emerges every bit the movie star.
Styles is great in Dunkirk – perhaps that’s why he’s been coy about his future in Hollywood – and despite his star power and the instantly recognisable face, he never overpowers a scene he’s in.
His character is arguably one of the more complicated and unlikable people in the film, but he also brings depth to the role and you understand, even if you don’t agree, why his character takes the actions he does.
The fresh and seasoned cast members kill it, Harry Styles included (…) You might be surprised to discover that former One Directioner Harry Styles manages to shine in his few key moments too, and is gifted with the delivery of the films only “F bombs”.
Harry Styles can actually act
Granted, Harry doesn’t have that many lines in Dunkirk, but then, nobody does in this near-silent, extremely tense war film. It very quickly becomes apparent, following a mesmerising shoot-out scene starring Fionn Whitehead (more on him in number 3), that the nearly 400,000 men stranded on the beaches of Dunkirk were too stunned to say much. Relatively speaking, then, Harry Styles plays one of the more outspoken soldiers, capably demonstrating both depth and a survivalist instinct that dangles his character right on the line between human and inhumane.
While the whole ensemble is phenomenal, the MVP is surprisingly singer Harry Styles as a British private named Alex. Many were skeptical when it was announced that Styles would make his big screen acting debut in Dunkirk. Similar to Heath Ledger’s portrayal as the Joker, though, Nolan saw something nobody else did. Styles turns in a raw and powerful performance as a young man fighting for his survival around every corner while still maintaining his humanity.
The casting of Dunkirk is near perfect. From Hardy to Keoghan, from Rylance to Harry Styles, the pop star who plays one of the young soldiers, the picture is filled with great English faces.
