The Arab World Institute, Jean Nouvel, 1987. Constructed as one of the 8 Grands Projets across Paris, which were initialized by Francois Mitterrand to symbolize France’s role in arts, politics, and economy. Every part was custom designed and detailed to the very bolts. The building was highly advanced for its time in technological pursuits; the mechanical sun-shading devices worked less than a day. Its facade is motorized to close and open in response to sunlight and worked to reflect the Islamic culture’s geometry and form. A truly modern architecture on the side of form follows function, as opposed to vice versa under post-modern architecture, referenced in Zaha Hadid’s Traveling Exhibition bought and placed by the Arab Institute in front of the Institute’s facade, creating a stark contrast between the two philosophies.
