This one of the very few Whispering towers of the world. No matter from which direction one approaches Vijayapura, they would move towards the majestic Gol Gumbaz structure. The main attraction of this mausoleum is that if you stand at the centre of this tomb and make a sound, it echoes seven times over. This feature of the circular dome draws visitors in large numbers. Mohammed Adil Shah (1626-56), the son of Ibrahim Adil Shah II, constructed this dome as a tomb for himself in the Indo-Saracenic style.

SURAGONDANAKOPPA SEVALAL TEMPLE: World’s only sacred site of the nomadic Lambadi tribal community

Suragondanakoppa in Honnali taluk is the world’s only sacred site of the nomadic Lambadi tribal community. This holy land of the Banjara (also known as Lambadi) community is the birthplace of Saint Sevalal. Members of the Banjara community visit this site in lakhs from allacross the country to bow to their Guru here. During Saint Sevalal’s Jayanthi, members of this community, from the young to the aged, undertake a padayatra to walk to this temple from where they are. This spiritual center has the deities of Saint Sevalal, Mariamma Devi and Bhogkum Devi. Spread over 23.5 acres, this holy center is being developed.

Where is it?

It is in Honnali taluk, attached to both Davangere and Shimoga districts.

How to get there?

From the Davangere, Harihar and Channagiri side, if you are moving towards Honnali, then turn left to in the direction of Nyamati, Savalanga and Chinnikatte. Proceed on this road for 5 km to reach Suragondanakoppa holy site. This place is approachable through Shimoga and Shikaripur, too.

This monolith stands atop Indragiri hill. This sculpture of Bhagawan Bahubali, which is thousands of years old has no match anywhere else in the world. Indragiri hill, which has a history of over 2,300 years hosts the Bahubali monolith that is over 1,024 years old. It stands 3288 feet above sea level and is 438 feet above the ground. Lord Gomateswara, as he is also called, can be spotted from the road from as far as 14 km away. The 57-feet tall sculpture has been carved out of a single stone. This one feature sets this sculpture apart from the others.

Buddha Vihar, which was established by Siddharth Vihar Trust as an ode to the Buddhist religion, is a sight to behold. Spread over 32,450 sq ft, the entire structure is built on top of 170 artistic stilts or pillars. The unique construction divides the structure into 282 blocks. The gopura is 70 meters wide and 59 feet tall. It is the main attraction of the Buddha Vihar. This structure is a combination of the architecture seen at Ajanta, Ellora, Sanchi, Nagpur, and Saranath. It has a mega meditation hall in which 2,000 people can sit at a time to meditate. In the hall sits a 6-foot-tall Buddha statue sculpted by the famous sculptor Ashok Gudigar from Shimoga. Statues of Buddha’s disciples Ananda and Kashyap are also part of the complex. The doors of Buddha Vihar were thrown open to the public on 7 January 2007, and since then a lot of public appreciation has come its way.

Hire Benakal houses many stone samadhis spread across its historical site. The Indian government requested UNESCO to include this site as an archeological, historical location. In its latest list of historical sites, UNESCO has indeedincluded Hire Benakal. The site has numerous stones erected to remember the deceased. The site is estimated to have 1,000 stone memorials. Some of the inscriptions on these megalithic stones are more than 3,000 years old. The location’s first existence came to be known when one Philips Mendosa Taylor wrote about it in the Royal Asiatic Society’s journal in 1835 and revealed the presence of such a place. There are drawings of pre-historic man on some of these stones. There are drawings of men holding hands and dancing, too. Human bones were being kept here along with the stones. The site has a sculpture with a half-moon shape. Here, the favorite foods of the dead were being kept. It is believed that the ancestors still reside here. It is indeed a mystery to find out how man managed to erect such large-sized stones when there was little engineering technology available at that time.

Krishnaraja Sagara dam was constructed to solve the irrigation and drinking water problems in the Mysore and Mandya regions. Since it was constructed during the reign of Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar, the dam came to be called KRS. This dam stands as an example of the expert engineering prowess of Bharat Ratna Sir M Visvesvaraya. It stands 124 feet tall and running 2.5 km long, this dam can hold 49.5 tmc feet of water. KRS dam solved the dry, arid drought-prone problems of Mandya district, which is now green and lush because of water from the dam. Visitors arrive in thousands here even today to view the attached Brindavan Gardens and the musical fountain shows organized here.

The Mysore Palace is the epicenter of the famous Dasara celebrations every year. MANDARAGIRI PEACOCK TEMPLE: A Jain Holly Place in the shape of Pinchi

Mandaragiri Betta is 7 km from Tumkur and 65 km from Bangalore. It was earlier known as Basti Betta. Now, it is the sacred site of the Jain community. At the foot of the hill is a Guru Mandir, which is constructed in the shape of a peacock feather fan. This is an important Jain temple, which is 81 feet tall and built to look like the peacock feather fan that was much in use by the Digambar Jain monks. This Guru Mandir is dedicated to Acharya Digambar Jain Chakravarty Sri Shanti Sagarji Maharaj, who lived from 1855 to 1955. After a visit to the Guru Mandir, go past Panditarahalli. A little ahead from here you will see a Bahubali-like statue. This is the statue of Digambar Chandranatha Thirtankara, which was installed in 2011. Basadi Betta or Mandaragiri is a stone’s throw away from here. The 918-feet tall monolithic stone hill has Jain temples at the top. One must climb 435 steps to reach the top of this hill, which looks like a giant boulder. The steps have supportive side rails, which makes it convenient for any able-bodied person to climb this hill.

ST. MARY’S ISLAND: One and only "Rock Pillars Island" of Karnataka

It is the world’s second most beautiful natural island after the Madagascar island. The actual name of this island is Tonsepar. In 1498, Vasco da Gama lost his way and stumbled upon this island. He called it the St. Mary’s Island. The specialty of this island is that it was formed from the lava that emerged from a volcanic eruption in this region over 8 crore years ago. This is the beauty of the hardened lava that are now the basalt rocks that we see on the island today.

SLEEPING BUDDHA HILL of Shahapur | Yadagiri Wonders

When you look at the four hills together from a distance it looks as though Buddha is lying down. This appearance gives it the name Sleeping Buddha Hill. Located on the banks of Mavinakere pond along Kalburgi Road in the outskirts of Shahpura in Yadgiri district. Stand on the city highway close to the Gescomunit to view the hills together. It appears as though the Buddha is sleeping with his head to the south.

YANA: Unique and iconic landstone and mega rock structures

Bhairaveswara and Mohini are two mighty mountain peaks. These massive rock outcrops are surrounded by 64 smaller peaks. Within the Bhairaveswara peak is a cave where Lord Bhairavesawara resides. It is believed to be a self-manifested rock formation of Bhairaveswara showing the sacred Ganga river taking birth at his crown. The rock formations are a work of art by the greatest artist – nature. All around is thick forest. The incessant flow of water adds to the glory of these rock formations, which are of limestone. They look phenomenal.

GOKAK FALLS: Known as the Niagara Falls of Karnataka

The roaring union of Ghataprabha and Markandeya rivers gives us the spectacular sight of Gokak waterfalls. It gushes in its full glory in the monsoon season, falling in a combination of red and buff colours. It is known as the Niagara Falls of Karnataka. The river waters meander through rocks and stones while zigzagging  their way to fall in a loud gush, which makes for an amazing sight. With tall hillocks on either side, the river flows between the stones and falls from a height of 400 feet. It looks like a horse’s face, which is why it is called Kudremukh (Kudre = horse, Mukh = face). It is a feast for the eyes!

Maravanthe stands as a witness to Karnataka’s abundant natural beauty. Maravanthe beach is a spectacular natural spot, about 55 km from Udupi. But even more spectacular is the beauty of the approach route towards Maravanthe. On one side of this road is Souparnika river while the other side of the Arabian sea. As far as the eye can see, there is natural beauty all around along this entire stretch. This wonder of nature with a river on one side and the sea on the other stretches for 1 km. Adding to this already beautiful scenery are the coconut trees along the river bank. This stretch can be found while driving from Udupi to Karwar.
