For those days when we are not at our mental forte and we are ravished by the existential platitude, I recommend "replicant" style make-up. It's not regular make-up, it develops superior internal strength, agility and native intelligence. The project "superheroes" show us the importance of make-up, in this case it's the only stand out element that defines the images, the outfits being tame with futuristic undertones and the idea of black and white photos simply correct. The altitude of surreal is created by the android-biorobotic physiques of the models.
Star quality that certain je ne sais quais, that is as illusive as it is intangible. A certain look and feel of a persona, that pertains to every aspect of they're life, people that just seem to stand out in any room they are in. This is not a thin that is related to physical beauty necessarily but a certain type of charisma, that is obvious when you see it but impossible to copy, that quality that young actors chase after, that shear uniqueness that makes certain people larger than life. Enjoy this collection of black and white photos and try to figure out for yourself how to get "star quality." Try to get all of these <3
When will blade runner stop being so cool?
We love the light, a selection of pieces that we will detail in time, stay tuned for more info and work from each of the artists in this selection. (artist names are in order of the pictures) .Ai Wei Wei, Daan Roosegaarde, Gaspar Battha , Heatherwick Studio, Kimchi & Chips, Lee Eunyeol, Sean Lenz, team IF.
Ed Phumora is an Indonesian photographer , who is especially skilled in portraiture. Ed rigorously respects all the rules of fashion photography and at first glance he doesn't seem to break convention. The model's pose is stiff, the color pictures don't shine with neon effects or have powerful contrast, and the black and white ones are quiet and maybe too static. But like any artist who carefully doses his efforts, he surprises us with a series of pictures called "editorial 1" witch I personally clicked with and I felt satisfied to understand he knew what he was doing. In the aforementioned selection are a few pictures in witch he collaborated with designer Laura Hui Shan Li and it is because of this collaboration that I explored Ed's world.
Since the dawn of art man has tried to capture the power and greatness that is nature, contemporary artist Ernesto Neto's pieces give us a deep insight into the beauty of organic matter. His abstract-minimalist pieces derive they're look from nature, they are a window into a micro-cosmos of organic delight. He modifies the exhibition halls and brings a sense of joy and chaos to clean, clear space. His installations are sometimes interactive engaging the viewer's sense of sight and sometimes smell (by filling parts of his installations with spices and fragrant plants). Rarely do we get an opportunity to be shrunk down to the size of pollen and explore the wonders of that miniature world. We love Ernesto's work, and we hope he goes on to produce even more grandiose pieces.
The olschinsky workshop was founded in 2002 in Vienna, by Peter Olschinsky and Verena Weiss, who's career as graphic designers, illustrators and art directors proves that art is a way of life. In an old house, witch originally seemed to be storage space, they built the olschinsky universe. At the present time the walls of the building have been covered with prints and pictures, illustrations and they're favorite projects, so much so that people think it's a gallery. Staring from the idea that I imagined how it would be to go to olschinsky workshop and that i hope that they have big windows, other beautiful things stuck to my mind: they're logo, the covers of Nevertheless magazine (a publication that Peter and Verena coordinate along with a large number of artists) and the illustrations of futuristic cities (that in my mind remind of "Ghost in the shell", except for the deferent color palettes, geometrization and lack of people).
As described by the New York Times on the eve of a major retrospective at the Musée des Arts Decoratifs in 2012, “the intense and joyous imagination of this artist — illustrator, cinéaste and advertising guru — makes him not so much a symbol of the past as a model for the future.” Jean-Paul Goube brings methods to the visual art vocabulary that foretold the appearance of Photoshop, years before it was even invented, trough paint, duck-tape and many other materials that today are replaced with a click. One of his masterpieces is Grace Jones, his muse and partner. Renowned for his iconic imagery, Jean-Paul Goube will bring Grace Jones into the spotlights, being responsible for her expansive career. The artist's unconventional vision and the new elements he introduces will become points of reference for the artists that precede him, and for the ones that take pride in loving his work: Andy Warhol calls him the best photographer in the world.
Check out this new work from Vinz, "TEMPUS FUGIT", he showcases 16 new works--8 in the streets and 8 in the gallery. I'm not going to get into the artist statement witch is kind of played out, but I think we can appreciate this beauty full artwork. Wandering the city I always hope I'll come across such works, but that is rarely the case. I have a special place in my heart for paste-up and these works hit the spot, crazy, surreal, and political, they are simple but efficient in they're messages. For a long time now I have following COARSE's work, an amazing studio based in Hong Kong. They produce great works and solid design, anything from the toys themselves to the packaging is done with tremendous skill. Modern design lines and a romantic feel make these pieces unique. I found myself fascinated with the skill full use of materials, the fact that the toys they make sometimes feature elements of atmosphere, the enormous attention to detail and the "mythos" they create. http://www.coarselife.com/

In the year 1987 Jimmy Nelson starts his ambitious adventure journal, armed with his camera he will create beautiful imagery. Since adolescence young Jimmy feels drawn to new and, unique things, tirelessly looking for the treasure of beauty. His first trip lasts for a year, a year in witch he traverses the length of Tibet on his own two legs, upon his return he publishes his first journal. "The purity of humanity exists" is the sentence that defines the project: Before they pass away, is the way he understood beauty. In 2009 he becomes a guest of the most isolated tribes, assisting in they're traditions and rituals. The 31 tribes are well surprised and draw in the viewer to understand they're nature. Jimmy Nelsons photographs shod be appreciated for they're magic and beauty but the data he compiled is mostly in the wrong. His pictures have been attacked by Stephen Corry (British anthropologist and indigenous rights activist): "In his photos of the Waorani Indians of Ecuador, he has them unclothed except for their traditional waist string. The Indians are not only shorn of their everyday clothes, but also of other manufactured ornaments such as watches and hair clips. In real life, contacted Waorani have routinely worn clothes for at least a generation, unless, that is, they are 'dressing up' for tourists. […] His Waorani female models have now preserved their modesty by tying 'fig' leaves into their waist string, which they would never have done formerly: the images look like a throwback to a past era, but they're also a contemporary invention." We think these works shod be appreciated for what they are: lovely, personalized and fantastical works. At the end of the 1990es Numen/ For Use make they're first appearance on the Croatian design scene. In an environment of transition and anomie after the war the context for design and, art seemed dead, the state of cultural blockage asked for a reevaluation of resources, and more so a reinvention of the design scene, in such a way that it made sense in the broken surroundings. Sven Jonke, Christoph Katzler and, Nikola Radeljkovic adopt the temporary and suggestive name "For Use", putting in focus yet again the regressive nature of the society in witch they had to work. In time "For Use" becomes a productive cell of furniture designers in Italy, the collective finds a series of connections, among witch is the Zagreb art club, a place that had a thriving art scene. Zagreb is the moment in witch the team becomes complete, they are joined by the graphic designers Jelenko Hercog and, Toni Uroda, thus is born the first solid design project and the homogenization of the members under the title: NUMEN. (noumenon- is a word derived from Kant's theory of knowledge signifying a strictly transcendental object.) ''Quite deliberately rejecting being turned into an ordinary design studio, Numen spontaneously became a guerrilla laboratory for the nurture and reaffirmation of classical modernist virtues, infiltrating via roundabout routes into the visual reality via actions related to the underground club scene in which on the whole a graphically dilettante chaos reigned.'' Says Numen. Another important moment is the transition from militant to liberator, the collective will develop fruitful collaborations with theaters, this revelatory process is the base of the amazing projects and installations that they have done.
Katherine Mathilda "Tilda" Swinton, it's hard to enter her world, not because the doors are not open, but once inside you find yourself in a labyrinth. Beyond her artistic abilities, Tilda is no longer jot one character, or two, or three, she seems to be a strong presence that the world collides with, and I say collides because people's need to understand her births all sorts of interpretations, that in the long run seem lacking in a factual layer, witch most of the times are unable to determine even a single one of her traits correctly. From alien to oddly human, in between being the androgynous, these are a few of the titles given to Tilda. Beyond words, she transmits.
“I do like not knowing where I’m going, wandering in strange woods, whistling and following bread crumbs,” she says. The bread crumbs she collects are the obvious clues in a chaotic world.
Photo credits in order: picture 1,2, and 3, Tim Walker, picture 4 is by Derek Jarman, and the last is by Paolo Roversi.
Our new gif comes with a lovely movie recommendation. If you have seen Lola Rennt, watch it again, if not we bet you'll love it.
LUDO, Paris based artist with a bone to pick. Amazing paste up pieces that spring up in the same way a sproutling springs up on a building rooftop, or grass trough the pavement. His mix of organics and technology is a strong, and powerful message, beautiful imagery that shows us how corrupt the technocracy is. You can't help but stare and fall in love with his irony and wit. I hope you enjoy this artist as much as we do.
PEOW! studios, makers of dreams and risographed masterpieces. I love this studio for all that it represents, it's alternative to the core, sensitive, and with spectacular artwork to boot. When looking trough a copy of Náva that a friend bought at Oslo comics expo I was exposed to they're unique style and way of doing things. For me at least Europe is leading the charge in this new wave of alternative comics, and thanks to people like PEOW! people are slowly learning about this beautiful, amazing medium of comics.
