Coming to terms with his own emotions wasn't something that Bucky had ever been swift with. There was always something else to think about, someone else to think about, and as long as he had those causes to work for...he didn't have to spend too much time with his own mind.

As it turned out though...being part of a loving and supportive team for a substantial enough time had a way of making a person comfortable. No matter how gruff or ill-tempered that Bucky would get at times, none of the had ever thought to abandon him. Some would offer comfort, others would give a tougher love, and some gave both.

Like Captain Tommy Vega.

He had been pacing enough to damn near wear a rut into the ground. He had been going through every possible worst case scenario that could happen as a result of what he was about to do, but still he held a small bouquet of Pink Evening Primroses in his hand as he paced. Bucky's heart was beating hard enough in his chest for him to feel his pulse in his ears.

When he gathered his courage, finally, he rounded the corner and strode over to the door that led to the office where Tommy currently resided. Before he could turn around and walk away, he knocked on the door. The hand that held the flowers remained down, slightly tucked away. Every second might as well have been an hour that he waited for the door to open.

Tommy coming back had been something she had only done to make ends meet while Charles was alive. She would have stepped back into retirement had it not been her girls . . . but also the team that she had come to call family. From the moment she allowed his death to be real, and she told the rest of their team . . . they had all managed to surround her with love and support. She didn't feel as alone as she expected.

One in particular was Bucky. He was a real soldier if she had ever seen one. He didn't back down from anything, and as gruff as he was, she had managed to see some of the softest sides of him. Between him just being there for her at the house . . . but also with her daughters. Anya babysat them a number of nights for Tommy in exchange for tutoring for her medical side of fire training, and Bucky managed to quickly win the girl's hearts . . . resulting in them asking when they would be getting to see him again.

As if she needed another reason to feel the attraction, just when she was having a particularly stressful day, she heard the knock on her office door and looked up from where her head had been resting her hands. Part of her thought to answer with a ' this isn't a good time ' and it had really been her plan until she opened the door.

And there he was . . . flowers in hand even. Her mouth hung open in slight surprise for a moment. " Buck! Hi! " Looking at the flowers, she eventually remembered there was a person attached to those flowers and she pulled the door open for him to come in before moving back toward her desk. " You did great work out there today. I was glad you had my back out there. "

Had Owen just been a decent man with a heart of gold, it would have been enough to at least catch Bucky's eye, and that day on the highway, he had caught Bucky's attention. To add the fact that the Captain himself had seen to it that the crew made Anya feel at home...that had practically e n s u r e d Bucky's indefinite loyalty.

It also didn't hurt that Owen happened to be pretty easy on the eyes as well. It was hard to ignore the way the other man's smile made his heart skip a beat, and all he could hope for was that his expression and the spark in his icy hues didn't give him away.

"She's at home," he answered, filling out another portion of the form before signing off on it and slotting the pen between the metal and the wood of the clipboard. Bucky hung it on a designated peg of a corkboard. "Anya decided that she didn't need sleep for almost three days straight, and I disagreed. So she's on dad-ordered bed rest."

Owen always took interest in the home life of his team. Having a good home life meant they were more likely to be in a good mindset for the job. But Owen genuinely enjoyed hearing every good thing, every boring thing, and looked to help with every bad thing he could manage to get out of Barnes. So far he had managed to stay pretty casual about it, at least he was pretty sure that he was. Bucky had a lot of stuff on his plate. The last thing he wanted to fuss with was a relationship for sure.

" Excellent news! " He exclaimed excitedly, though he didn't speak louder than the immediate vicinity could hear. Anya was a driven girl, even if it meant she didn't look after her health. He could see that starting to form, and was glad that Bucky was doing his best to reign that in. " She's determined. I've never seen someone more determined to break the record than her. Where'd she get that from? You or her mom? "

He was pretty sure that he was going to say her mother. He said stuff like that all the time when he talked about TK . . . but it was an excuse to see Bucky talk about something that made him happy. Anya always managed to do that.

Ever since he had started working at the firehouse, and even without him noticing, Bucky had started to feel a sense of comfortable domiciliary while on his shifts. Some things never changed within him, as shown by the more monotonous tasks of the station, like maintenance, providing him with a unique therapy. A time when his mind could shut off for a little while, and he could accomplish something simple. He had been able to keep himself sane at times back when he and Steve lived together, just by working at the docks. When everything felt like too much, he was able to narrow his focus.

During the times that he was going at such tasks, the crew had learned that he was a little more apt at conversation, ironically enough. Perhaps it was because he didn't have to make direct eye contact. It wasn't that he had a problem doing so, he just had a problem when it happened accidentally and he wound up dissociating. It made people think he was staring, more often than not.

This time around, the company that he had been keeping consisted of Paul, T.K. and Marjan. Not long before Owen arrived, they had dispersed in order to take care of their own smaller tasks, but the soft smile that had formed on Bucky's lips had lingered there long enough to be noticed. Hearing the man's remark, it tugged upward into a smirk.

"Funny you should ask; me an' th' crew were jus' gossiping behind your back, great stuff, very embarrassing." He grabbed his clipboard and marked off a few boxes.

"You got a hell of smile there yourself, Cap."

One thing about Owen Strand . . . he never minded being the source for a laugh. He knew it was all in good fun, and if it meant the team as a whole was in good spirits, supporting one another . . . He'd be the butt of everyone's joke for that accomplishment. His team, and their ability to work together for something better was all he had really ever cared about happening.

It had especially been rewarding to see Bucky flourish so much since getting there. Both he and his daughter seemed to be finding their own more and more each day. It was nice to see someone he knew needed a fresh start actually reach out and take it. That or maybe it was Bucky specifically that made it more rewarding. He liked the guy, and more than just as a good man or good firefighter. He looked forward to seeing him, and when he couldn't . . . he found himself feeling disappointed.

" Walking into my house with laughter makes it easy I'll admit that. " He looked around, noticing that Bucky's daughter wasn't in tow as usual. " Where's the future Probie? " He asked, referring to Bucky's daughter.

There was a natural pull to want to feel anxious when everything seemed to be going so well. Not today though. From the moment Owen walked into the firehouse to start his 24 hour shift, he had a hard time not feeding into the cheer attitude the rest of his crew had going on. Even Bucky had a smile on his face Owen rarely saw.

" Well would ya look at that . . . he really does smile. " And not just when his daughter was around, though who could blame him, she was a joy whenever she was a the firehouse. " What's got you in a good mood this early Barnes? "

TK checking out the dancer in the background will always be hilarious.

The look on Josie's face when she sees Paul for the first time... same, girl, same.

Speaking of Josie, since I'm apparently on fashion watch... this outfit? stellar. also she brought her own bowling ball & bag. should've known right then and there that they weren't compatible.

The looks shared between TK & Owen during his chemo were top tier. I really loved their bond in s1 and the way they can communicate with looks like this.

Grace's entire storyline in this episode is frankly offensive and gross and we're going to pretend that what actually happened is she sat down with Tommy after getting horrible advice from her other "friend" and it never happened. But what we can appreciate... is this dress. My god! Judd is a lucky man.

Mateo & TK teasing Paul is everything to me. Gives me all of the firefam brother feels!!

-> Judd was the one who did the asking; he knew he liked her from the first call. It's why he kept calling, and he worked up a lot of nerve to ask her.

-> They both have their nicknames and pet names. Juddy and Gracey. And just about as many sweet things you call a woman, Judd's calling Grace. She's in his phone as "My Heart" and she hears darlin', baby, honey, and half a dozen more from Judd. He's sweet on her and proud of it.

-> It's a toss up of who's coming off work, equal cooking opportunity. Grace has a more consistent home-sleep schedule, so she probably usually takes over cooking especially when Judd's pulling 24s; any other days he makes up for that or he's cooking at the firehouse and Grace is always invited if she can pull away to have a meal.

𝚆𝙷𝙾 𝙷𝙰𝚂 𝙱𝙴𝚃𝚃𝙴𝚁 𝚃𝙰𝚂𝚃𝙴 𝙸𝙽 𝙼𝚄𝚂𝙸𝙲?

-> Grace absolutely. Judd's got average taste, but Grace's is who you'd want to go to if you needed a Playlist. Grace's taste in music became Judd's.

-> Well, Judd is a massive bear of a man and he can sleep through about anything. He has absolutely woken up cocooned in blankets without intending to be, he's the bed space heater too.

-> Once again, another variable answer. Grace usually wakes up first on the off days that's for certain. If there's no alarm to wake Judd, he'll sleep like a log.

-> One of the godsends about being with Judd Ryder is that Judd makes good coffee, or more that he knows how exactly Grace takes her coffee.

-> Judd! He'll cling to and hold onto Grace like she's the most precious stuffed animal. Big cuddler this guy.

-> Judd, part of that is when ptsd was getting the better of him and part of that is the nature of work. Although he'd much rather being getting the full amount of sleep he can. Just had to get to sleep more than anything. Grace is more likely to stay up because she's focused on something whereas Judd is up later cause he just couldn't get to sleeping.

-> Judd absolutely reaches, it's quite clear to him that Grace is his whole world and he just adores her, wants to show her and everyone.

Both of them, but they are decent people about it. Though Judd is respectfully handsy.

Judd remembers sweeping her off her feet and carrying her inside. Fussing of how they wanted to decorate (he let grace do a whole lot of that; he just assembled everything and put in place).

-> It's the same with the regret, but there isn't much he'd change. They both are faithful people, and Judd really tries to believe everything happens for a reason.

-> Judd would say that his love language is touch and acts of service. He tells her he loves her and calls her sweet things. Words and feelings talk can be hard for him although he tries real hard with her, and that itself is a way of showing love because he trusts her.

Although Bucky wasn't aware that Owen was from New York, there was something about the vibe that the spark in the man's eyes and his smirk gave off...it reminded him of another Captain in Bucky's life. Perhaps that was why he only paused for a lingering moment before he relented and strode to catch up, following Owen into his office. The honesty, even if withheld at first, was still enough to win a few points with Bucky. After all, it wasn't like the former Winter Soldier hadn't used the same exact tactic in certain situations. Half-truths were his bread and butter when he was out on the field. This guy wasn't a spy or an assassin though. That much he could see just from looking into the man's eyes. Owen just happened to be good at manipulating a situation to the advantage. He knew what to say and when to say it and who to say it to. As long as that power was used for good, he had no qualms with it.

They both arrived in the Captain's office and he was startled by how well-kept it was. Somehow, the space took it up a notch on the modern and sharp environment, while also seeming to be an inviting space.

At least by normal standards. Bucky rarely felt comfortable in any sort of office setting. His shrink could attest to that. At least, his first shrink. The one that the court mandated as a condition of his pardon...

Receiving recognition though, that had made him uncomfortable since he'd been drafted. Likely because all that he'd been 'recognized' for. So when it was clear that he had been made by S O M E O N E in that firehouse, his entire form immediately tensed. He stood up a bit straighter and didn't move any closer to the desk, his shoulders squaring as though he was ready to bolt at a moment's notice with his daughter and not look back. And that was the case.

It seemed that the first responder before him could read the room as he was already attempting to calm Bucky without him having to have said anything. His jaw tightened and he tried to keep his feet planted on the ground he was standing on.

"Yeah, nobody but everyone in this goddamn firehouse," he corrected, "you still haven't told me why th' hell ya called me down here, so how about you jus' come out with it."

CAPTAIN OWEN STRAND.

Owen could tell this man was on edge . . . and he had every right to be. Owen wasn't naive to how this all looked, but there WAS a reason. Just like when Owen had Judd come out to the house, only to meet him with telling him he wasn't ready to come back yet . . . Owen hadn't led with why he had asked Bucky to come out here because he wanted to see what kind of reaction he could get if this man was put under pressure.

And so far . . . he wasn't disappointing.

When Bucky came back now DEMANDING that Owen come out with it already as to why he had been asked to come down here. Anyone else around this man would have probably felt . . . uneasy about him. No doubt a purposeful air about him, being remainder from the admittedly insane life this man had led or perhaps a way to defend himself from being hurt. He'd seen that enough in his life to know the signs.

" Mr. Barnes I called you down here because I think you're looking for a place to start over. " He said rather deadpanned, calling him out right there. He still wore that charming smile he had, though it had softened slightly. Realizing that Bucky WASN'T planning on sitting down, Owen stood from his desk, turning to look out the window that oversaw the garage of the Firehouse. Already it looked like the teenager Owen could assume was his daughter, was waving at Marjan and Judd as she cautiously approached the garage. His team was instantly welcoming her after recognizing who she was, and a brief conversation he couldn't here, they had her over by the engine, showing her the ins and outs.

" She's somethin special. Repelled into a volcano in a mini golf course to pull a man out. " He pointed to Marjan, who was moving to show her the harnasses she used, Anya looking overjoyed with being shown everything. " And Paul? " He pointed out Paul, who Bucky had met already downstairs. " At his old Firehouse he called out a man with a gun from just watching him. And Judd . . . Judd's probably one of the best men I know. " No doubt there was confusion in why he was saying what he was saying, but he was getting to a point.

" Not all of us appear to belong here, and not all of us are what we seem. But we take care of each other here . . . And that's not just when the shift ends. It's out there in the real world too. " When he looked at Bucky again, he turned to face him fully. " What I called you down here to do . . . was to give you a chance to take what happened to you and do something GOOD with it. Something that doesn't inflict harm, but saves people. And to give your kid a chance to know the man you want her to know. "
