Mazunte, the jewel of Oaxaca
Mazunte is a beach and ecological jewel on the Oaxacan coast of the Mexican Pacific, belonging to the municipality of San Pedro Pochutla, the name of the town is the same as that of a red and blue crab that lives on the coast. Mazunte is located a short distance from other important destinations of the Oaxacan coast, being located a few kilometers from San Agustinillo, Zipolite beach, Punta Cometa and Puerto Angel, so if you want to take one of the flights to Oaxaca to travel along its east coast it is the most convenient place to start.
The main attractions of the town
Mazunte and its surroundings have beaches that are among the most welcoming and naturally best endowed in the Pacific of Oaxaca. The town has a long history of sea turtles, first leaving them on the verge of extinction and then recovering them through a formidable ecological work in which the Mexican Turtle Center stands out. Mazunte is home to several annual festivals of tourist and cultural interest, which attract thousands of visitors to the town, including the International Jazz Festival, the International Circus Festival and a nudist festival.
Mazunte is a picturesque town located on the seafront at the foot of the Sierra Madre del Sur, between the town and the beach is the Avenue or Mazunte Walk, which is the main street from the commercial point of view, where by government provision Residential houses and other establishments of the place must be built in harmony with the environment. The main festivities of Mazunte
The population of Mazunte venerates the patron saint of Esquipulas, whose festivities are on January 15, during the festival, there are among other activities, music concerts, folk dances, fireworks, regional food festival and craft shows. The Festival of the Spring Equinox is also organized in Mazunte, a cultural event with pre-Hispanic roots, which is celebrated on March 21, or 22 and stands out for its sample of dances of all types, such as pre-Hispanic, folk, belly dance and others.
Local crafts and gastronomy
The main crafts of Mazunte are necklaces, bracelet, bangles and other ornaments made with beach shells and also carve pieces of wood, while the local gastronomy revolves around fish, shellfish, mollusks and other oceanic species, captured by artisanal workers. However, if you fancy a traditional Oaxacan meal from inland, such as black mole, tlayudas, stone broth or grasshoppers, in the good restaurants of the coast they will surely be able to please you, although hot chocolate is not a drink of beach, you won´t miss it here accompanied by a delicious sweet bread.
