Jonsa and the Starks – What was the point?
GOT faded fast after the finale. My theater dance teacher once said finish all your performances strong because the audience always remembers the last thing you do. After watching the GOT finale, those words are ringing in my ears. The Dark Dany story came and destroyed KL, diluted the excitement about Jonsa and sadly GOT. Dany became the face of GOT. I do agree (a little bit) with the way they hid the conclusion of the Jonsa love story from the public because it protected Sophie from a lot of backlash from Dany fans. However, I do not agree with the emotional turmoil Jon displayed over Dany’s death. Dany’s mental instability was overlooked by fans because of her beauty; and, lets face it, Dany had great nude scenes with her dragons. I refuse to believe Jon would give his heart to Dany so cheaply. From an acting perspective, Sophie and Kit had the most difficult romance to portray on screen because they had to conveying an unspoken love story. Jonsa mainly used eye contact and anguish breathing to convey to the audience their love for each other, along with simple touches - Not to mention they each gave up power for an “ordinary life” in Winterfell.
In regards to Jonsa, I feel strongly this - if Jon did not go to Sansa immediately to consummate their love after finding out his parentage AND if Jon and Sansa did NOT confess their love for one another before the Long Night war then I would NOT have continued to support Jonsa. Everyone agreed there was a 99% chance that everyone would die in Long Night war - the first thing you want to do before going off to war or dying is to tell your loved ones how much you love them. If neither of these two things happened BEFORE the long night war then Jonsa fans we got our answer; jonsa was not meant to be and we should accept it. However, fear not, Jonsa did happen before the Long Night war, despite Dany’s presence in Winterfell. Jonsa is a bittersweet love because although they survived and realized their love for one another, they ended up apart for unknown reasons. My biggest concern about Jonsa has always been a severe character change for Jon because of the possibledeath of Sansa. Greyworm lost Missandei and he became a cold blooded killer; Robert lost Lyanna and became a male whore; and I believe Cersei put all her love in her children to hide the pain of losing her one true love.(Not Jaime)
Anyway, I want to explore what was the point of Jonsa’s unspoken love story. What was the point of watching Jon reluctantly make out with Dany and that boatsex? Why tease us with Jonsa? – just put Jon and Dany together and let them rule, and pair Sansa up with someone else. What will be the payoff of Jon and Sansa surviving? What was the point? And on a side note, why was Jon Aryn’s death so important to Ned?
The only logical explanation for Jonsa’s existence is to re-establish the rightful heir to prominent houses - Stark, Targaryen and Lannister- which were destroyed during Robert’s rebellion. Jon was right the true enemy has always been - the Night King. He steals the bodies and lives after killing his victims. There was a reason the 3 eyed raven showed Bran flashbacks of Winterfell with – Rickard, Rodrick, Ned, Lyanna and Benjen. The key to decoding GOT is to know the past because the past repeats itself.s
Here is a quick outline of what I believe happened:
Chaos happened around the time of Robert’s rebellion; memories were erased. Many of the characters are not who they believe they are. Both the Starks and the Targaryens were almost destroyed and/or went into hiding during Robert’s rebellion. The 3 eyed raven has been manipulating events to bring the leaders of House Stark and House Targaryen back to its rightful place in Westeros. Lyanna and Cersei suffered the most because they were separated from their family. I believe Lyanna and Cersei’s bloodline (children) were the key to winning the Long Night war. Whenever I see evil such as Ramsey, Dany, Joffrey and Viserys, I believe the evil seed came from the Night King. “ The seed is strong.” (By the way, I believe Arya killed the Prince – the Night King’s son. The Night King may still be a threat. )
So, if the past repeats itself, there was a hidden Targaryen prince and another Jonsa hidden love story also existed in Winterfell that may have involved Lyanna, Ned, Benjen and Bran. My biggest prediction was Jon’s journey in the entire show has been to resurrect Sansa. I believe Sansa took Dany’s body and Jon will eventually take Tyrion’s body. The point of the story is Jon and Sansa’s children will continue the legacy/bloodline of Lyanna, Benjen, Ned, Bran, Cersei, Tyrion and Dany.
I also believe the season 1 opening episode in Winterfell symbolized a Dream of Spring for House Stark. Jonsa will be the ones to have 5 northern children together in Winterfell and raise the Targaryen/Stark bastard.
Whew – that was a lot. This meta is suppose to be thought provoking. There had to be a point to GOT. Since we were not given explicit answers to our questions, we must draw conclusions based on the clues the show gave us. GOT will not be remembered as a classic because of the s8 finale. They stuck the audience with a bad ending and then just left us. However, GOT did have one main point/purpose – Jonsa’s successful fight for love, family and survival.
