Researching superblocks as sustainable neighborhoods for multiple uses and functions.
Initial mapping of current site.
Non-computational approach: Gathering real-live information based on actors’ needs and opinion. Later on the information will be transferred so that parametric strategies for participatory urbanism and citizens mapping is identified.
How do we think we could get there?
Reasoning for considering or not considering each of the scales.
Out of 17 Sustainable Goals, which ones do we prioritize... and why are they important?
Transferring Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations from Studio 1 to Studio 2, how would they be implemented to our new project though? Would the most appropriate scale to work on be occupancy scale, building scale or urban scale? Let’s see.
Studio 2... a way to observe participatory design?
Design Thesis Statement_Draft
Using Biomorpher to optimise our design, which has been informed by intersection points of circulation around the site.
Developing the circulation and identifying intersections points, the site was segmented into space limits that will be used to generate the model designs with Biomorpher tool.
Flowchart 1 to identify views and circulation.
Flowchart 2 to identify material's choice.
Flowchart 3 to identify pavilion's design based on material's choice and performed embodied energy.
THE PROBLEM:
Greater sustainability is one of the big infrastructure challenges that cities face today and will face in the future. Construction is one of the fields that contributes the most to the greenhouse emissions and is one of the reasons for the poor air quality that impacts the environment.
For example, buildings in the United Kingdom represent 40% of the total energy consumption [1]. However, the better design could make a big difference in reducing energy use. In order to tackle the issue, minimse the emissions and maximise the growing potential of cities, the need for smarter thinking in the built environment has to be recognised.
Additionally, the greater collaboration between government, private and public sectors is also important so that people become more informed about infrastructure development towards sustainable resiliance.
THE THEORY AND THE METHODOLOGY:
Quantitative methodology will be used to inform the consumption of materials and their embodied energy performance in the United Kingdom. With the help of genetive alogrithms and generative design we will be able to justify materials’ embodied energy by analysing their co-relation between size, materials’ selection and spatial requirements. During the concept development different design possibilities will be tested in order to identify the most appropriate materials’ choice based on spatial requirements and materials‘ performance.
The design of the pavilion will be generated by inputs of materials’ performance, materials’ size differences and their location on site. Once tests run, each generated design will have different specification and dimension based on build performance, embodied energy and foorprint emissions. Most appropriate design will be selected by analysing the minimised embodied energy while maximising the used area.
Alongside the quantitative methodology, we will use qualitative methodology by looking at the reasons for high CO2 emissions in construction and will research the Circular Economy as a driver to our agenda for sustainable development in the built environment within the United Nations Sustainable Goals 2030.
THE STRATEGY:
In order to make better informed decision of which materials to choose when designing a building, it is important to understand the embodied energy of materials alongside with the rest of the decision-making considerations. The total embodied energy of a building depends on the choice of materials, the way it has been constructed, the methods that have been used, the size, etc.
Therefore, to resolve “the problem”, we have chosen to analyse some of the lowest embodied energy materials. We have also identified the impact of pre-fabricated construction as it helps to minimse the CO2 emissions, as well as the embodied energy of materials. The metrics that explain the ecological resiliance will focus on recycability, right-sized components and disposing materials on site.
