unrealistic inside and out / week 2 homework
in response to the non-art skill video i created a conceptual short video displaying the sugar bowls i moulded out of toffee. emphasis on their material qualities/the way they embody space. the audio paired with the visuals are multiple recording of white noise i encountered during week 2, attempting explore negative space/the unnoticed through sound. an eeriness is manifested through the repetitive, pointless actions of filling a bowl made out of sugar with milk, destined to do nothing but ‘be’ - perhaps in the name of beauty or absurdity. questioning the necessity of art fulfilling a purpose.
tapestry in honour of a space goddess - whichever one likes it best
touch pool/tange
a sacrificial space, honouring negative and positive space. sacraments present themselves as objects that exist in relation to one another. a salmon head wrapped in chiffon lies next to the pool, a guardian of sorts, keeping an eye on the holiness of the space. a mat invites the viewer to engage with the sewer-like contents. the water a grey like shade partially hides objects floating amongst the pool, infused with salt and honey the space continues its existence through peoples hands. a space bible floats concealed, understandble in the least. the space goddess reveals what she desires.
untitled installation piece - text written on the central window frame is a space mantra translated into secret code/binary. binary in my interpretation can depict negative/empty space as it consists of 0’s that encapsulates space and 1’s that divide/disrupt space
this piece is particularly rooted in my experience of spirituality as i tried to simplify and express my understanding of the earth and its bizarre presence. fabric acts as a holy sacrament, an offering to wholly good universe that (i assume) shares the same love of material and texture as i do. honouring a sweatshirt that grew mould by hanging it above the centre panel, attached is a clear vinyl circle symbolising the heart. attached with a broken safety pin, trash/waste is celebrated in the new space religion. whatever takes up space is finally noticed, understood, spoken to.
space mantra ode holy scripture doctrine translated reads:
latin/ english
intrabi locus enter space
construi locus construct space
haberr caeli capture air
prope locus close space
aperta spatium open space
righteousness a photo series / a select colour palette was utilised in order to maintain a sense of order and understanding. objects framed by space dominate the images accentuating SPACE and what the common eye chooses to ignore
sugar bowl, decomposing
peel series - exploration of the symbolic connotations of the banana. the inherent sexuality . the softness, the fluidity, the theatre. the similarity of fruit and man. the connection of fruit to sensuality.
re-worked loom
texturally exploring space and its undeniable pattern
pillow case
delicately strung in the air, pillow case swallows as much space as possible. aiming to entrap something of its own. mesh folds and crinkles by its own will, casting shadows of illusiveness. negative space is highlighted. negative space is celebrated.
wire+yarn sculpture details
appropriating iconography from both alternative/mainstream religion and redesigning the meaning/associations
a cross and a circle combine, offering a fresh perspective, encouraging the questioning of all faith and it’s legitimacy
sneak peek of an open work photo series named ‘righteousness’ exploring space/negative space and symbolic imagery through digital photography. a mixture of photos taken on an iphone camera and a digital camera, an atmospheric airy quality is manifested, the viewer questions how these images bounce off each other, romanticisation of the everyday and the almost unnoticeable appear in harmony
touch pool/TANGE test run
invoking the senses with a series of found objects and a tactile book floating within the water
water will have a slight milkiness to it, concealing some objects.
touch pool acts as a shrine to my private, very-own, singular devotee, exclusive, secret religion i construct through the majority of my practice. the objects are handpicked sacraments symbolising certain aspects of the human experience’s interaction with spirituality. the book itself is full of hymns translated into binary, rendering them impossible to understand for the average person. each page has a dominant quality of transparency.
creating a work inspired by my personal experience of spirituality has been a challenge, choosing to keep certain elements concealed as a way of protecting the sanctity of my experience.
