Monofile: The Hanged Man
Victim: Hideyoshi Kishi Location of Body: Dormitory Cause of Death: Exsanguination Time of Death: 5:01PM
The victim is Hideyoshi Kishi. The time of death was 5:01PM. The body is located in the dormitory slumped right outside the door with the symbol of The Lovers. The victimâs expression seems to be one contorted into pain. There is a single stab wound in his torso.
Chapter 1 | Mayfly December
(tw: blood)
Not long after Monomiâs announcement ends, you find yourself heading to the area Monomi told you to meet at, knowing that it would do no good to delay. Surely they had a way to force you there, anyway, especially with Yoko.
âŚ
It was just easier this way.
When you arrive, you spot a group of students standing in front of someoneâs dorm roomâ you believe itâs Aki Ishiiâs from the symbol on the door. Takeru, Sandwich, Misaki, Atsuko and Yoko had gathered here before the rest of your classmates, so itâs safe to assume that they were the ones to discover whatever it was that was slumped over on the ground.
And as you step closer to get a better look, you stop in your tracks as you realize that it wasnât a thing, but rather a someone.

CH1: SURVIVAL STRATEGY! : ryuunosuke_â hideyoshi
ultimateouendanâ:
âThatâs understandable! Things tend to be a lot more exciting when youâre in the middle of all the action!â
Heâs nodding along with the otherâs statement, having long determined that especially for students attending HPA, being front and center was often preferable ⌠especially because one had a lot more control over their own situation as opposed to the typical spectator!
At the otherâs question, Ryuunosuke actually finds himself feeling a little embarrassed â not that that sentiment is reflected in his features at all!
âNOPE!â
Seems like heâs not done yellingâŚ
âI just saw how empty the room was and thought itâd be fun to have a little scream, yâknow? Or a big scream in this case â I only got one volume when it comes to yelling AHAHA! Sorry if I startled you though, I really wasnât expecting a response! It was refreshing to let loose like that, though, wasnât it?â
Despite the powerful greeting they had exchanged surely not more than a couple of minutes ago at best, Hideyoshi finds himself startled by the shout that denies his assumption --Â a surprise that comes through wider eyes.
When the taller man explains himself, it draws the cards player to take a better look around the room; after all, all his attention had been squarely placed on Ryuunosuke as a focal point the second he had even so much as looked in here. His gaze is roaming as he responds but he is no less attentive.
âYouâre right! Freeing oneâs inhibitions is great!!â
Heâs back to smiling, satisfied at this tiny mark of shared thought.Â
âA move like that is no sweat on my brow, do not be concerned! Why, I wasnât even THAT surprised...â His hand waves a bit to help dissuade any worry. âIt is a shame you canât yell like that properly outside but there is a charm to doing it indoors too. Echo chambers are fun. It makes you feel like youâre bigger than you actually are!â
Swords & Hanafuda || Takeru || Chapter 1 || Closed: Hideyoshi
takerunokuboâ:
Speaking of attire, Takeru looks down at his own clothes. He then takes a good look at what Hideyoshiâs wearing and then compares it to the armor. Thereâs a frown as the realisation sinks in.
âYeah,â he sighs. âThatâs probably a smarter idea.â He gives a longing look to the sword. âMmmmm. Iâll wield you one day, buddy, one day.â
After saying his farewell to an inanimate object, Takeru goes to take a seat at one of the tables. He picks up a deck of cards and starts looking through them.
âOkay! So this is the hanafuda!â The linguist molds the cards back into a neat little stack and slides it towards the professional with a chuckle. âHaha, feel free to start dropping pearls of wisdom so I can get good!â
âYou sure will,â he nods in agreement. Itâs not a guaranteed promise, but he says it as if itâs the most certain thing in the world as he nods. He smiles, a bit hopeful on the subject even if they must bid it goodbye for now.
Hideyoshi joins Takeru at the low seats and watches as the other handles the cards. The enthusiasm is infectious, and the experience of being able to teach a willing subject is euphorically novel; giddiness reaches the brunet as he accepts the cards and starts placing them out not to play but rather display all the cards by suits.
Despite that, Hideyoshi points not to groups by suits but instead to individual cards in each as he explains, âHanafuda cards have five special categories outside of their suits. The bright cards are the most important ones: the phoneix, the rain man, full moon, curtain, and crane.
âThen we have the animal cards, but these are tricky since not all of them are actually animals. Weird, right?
âBut the ribbon cards are straight forward fortunately! The colors are important for some match-ups. And all the other cards without much going on in them are just the plain cards; donât forget about them though! Theyâre not good individually, but theyâre good for an extremely unlikely but game-changing play.â
Despite his somewhat lacking explanation at the start, he speaks with vibrant color to voice.
âKnowing what types of cards are what helps in creating card combinations for points. They have their own different point-values, so itâs good to remember them! Theyâre all in that liâl booklet over there if you want to see what scores what. Theyâre called âyaku.ââ He at last finishes with a gesture towards the pamphlet on the side of the table. Hideyoshi rests his cheek on his palm and his elbow on the tabletop.
âAs for why I organized it like this⌠well, these are the suits but thatâs not too important point-wise in koi-koi specifically. But theyâre pretty when you sort it by their monthly flowers, donât you think?â
Guiding cards | Orpheus | Chapter 1 | ATTN: Hideyoshi
shslorpheusâ:
As he stepped into the Hanafuda Player lab, Orpheus was not sure how to take his new surroundings - while most of it looked as he expected it to be, there were some elemts to it that completely looked out of place. It was a strange mixture of traditional and modernism - briefly, he wondered whether there was a deeper meaning to it, but decided to push these thoughts aside in favour of the man who rose from behind the bar.
Meeting the SHSL Hanafuda Player here seemed like fate - after all, he had already met others in rooms that were designated for them, so this felt a little bit special.
As always, Orpheus smiled as he nodded:âYesââ
And he wasnât able to say more, because Hideyoshi hopped over, placing himself on top of one of the stools. Surprised how smoothly this went, the fnatasy novelist blinked, before his smile returned.
â⌠You seem to do that often. I certainly wouldnât be able to pull it off like you did.â
Honestly, Orpheus doubted heâd be able to nail it at all - rather, heâd flail like an idiot and that was an embarrassment that he wasnât quite ready to go through.
âHm⌠Yes, it is quite strange how this room was modeled. Though I suppose you are correct - I wouldnât happen to know much about it, given that I mostly work from home. Still, now I cannot help but wonder how a fantasy novelistâs lab would look likeâŚâ
Probably similar to the book store, just mainly filled with fantasy books. Maybe some mythology. Who knows.
At Orpheusâs assumption, Hideyoshi felt a little tickled. It was a bit of a compliment, wasnât it? Though he shakes his head to be polite, it is hard to fight the threat of his grin growing goofy and larger.
âEheheh... Oh, I donât know... Itâs just a little trick you get used to when you have someone you want to show off in front of all the time.â
Bashfulness inspires perhaps a bit too much honesty.
Concerning the topic of research labs, the cards player finds himself able to cool his head of bloated self-confidence and arrogant thoughts.
âHm... It would have to be for an authorâs perspective as opposed to a readerâs considering the magical girl one. I bet it would have lots of paper and ink and...â
A flicker of childlike excitement twinkles in the brunetâs eyes.
â...maybe some awesome weapons and shields for reference?â
CH1: SURVIVAL STRATEGY! : ryuunosuke_â hideyoshi
ultimateouendanâ:
Ah, so someone was here..! To say that he wasnât a little surprised by the response would be a bit of a lie, however, he doesnât give much of a thought to being startled: actually heâs kind of elated at having received such an enthusiastic response!
âNICE REACTION!â
He yells back before deciding that screaming across the room wasnât exactly the best way to hold a conversation, crossing the room and extending a hand out towards the other.
âI like your energy, friend! The nameâs Ryuunosuke; Iâm responsible for handling the cheer team, in case that wasnât obvious AHAHA! We could always use more people who arenât afraid to get a little loud!â
He stares down at his hand for a few seconds, and seems to realize something.
âAh, not that Iâm asking you to join â well, maybe. I can guarantee youâd have lots of fun! But regardless, itâs really nice to meet you!â
The cards player stares dumbly but his mouth hanging open does twitch up to create a smile even if his head has yet to quite catch up with the situation. It is when he registers exactly what heâs been doing and what he was being complimented on ( not everyone is fast all days... ) that Ryuunosuke has already crossed over to talk at a more appropriate distance and volume level.
âAn ouendan member then? I see, I see!âÂ
The brunet takes the other manâs hand with a strong grip, shaking it with gusto.
âMy name is Hideyoshi Kishi. I am not used to being on the cheering side of things I confess... I prefer more being on the other side. I feel more motivated having the stakes myself as opposed to being invested in that of others.â
He retracts his hand back and considers for a moment whether or not to close the door before ultimately deciding against it.
âNot to knock on your job, of course. You were practicing before I entered, were you not?â
Swords & Hanafuda || Takeru || Chapter 1 || Closed: Hideyoshi
takerunokuboâ:
While his classmate closed the distance between them, Takeruâs attention was redirected back to the sword the samurai in front of him is wielding. The hanafuda playerâs question and offer even linger in the air for a while as Takeru continues to be entranced by the blade. After a few more moments of silence pass, he turns his head to Hideyoshi with smile.
âSwords are so cool!â He puts his hands together, pretending to have a sword in hand. He even makes a few swinging motions complete with sound effects. âSwoosh! Swiiiing! I wish I had one! And that I knew how to use it!â
Itâs hard to tell if he was talking to Hideyoshi, or simply speaking aloud to himself at that point.
Regardless, Takeru pounds gently on his chest while clearing his throat.
âYou could teach me swordsmanship too? Teach me both, please! The hanafuda and the way of the sword! We could start with whichever one you think is more fun!â
At Takeruâs miming, Hideyoshi admittedly jumped back a bit as if to dodge what pretend strikes the linguist was creating. It was a bit silly on his part to behave as if there were an actual threat but it was an almost instinctual response when he saw the otherâs body language.
âI can. Though perhaps my offer is a bit hollow⌠I took up more the sabre than the katana. I am sure the disciplines differ, and it would be prudent to have the proper attire to avoid actually hurting one another. Unless you mean to hulk around this armor wherever?â
It is a shame though to have to look as if he was merely teasing the other when the linguist had looked so enthusiastic about the prospect.
âOn the contrary, a game of cards donât hurt most. Maybe when we can find a source of first aid we can both try a hand at swordsmanship though. How about it?â
Chapter 1 | A Game of Cunning and Luck | Hideyoshi | [ATTN: đ ]
idyllicillusionistâ:
ââŚIsnât that quite a jump to make from karuta to hanafuda?â
Not that they had any jurisdiction to judge, really. They didnât know a lick about playing any of these card-based games. All they knew was that it exists, really.
âMostly?â They repeat, a curious glint in their eyes. âLet me guess, do people get just a little too mad at you whenever you beat them at hanafuda? Iâd honestly expect itâ there are people out there like that, after all~.â
The jump to karuta to hanafuda is definitely one, but itâs one he merely smiles at instead of giving a real answer. History and information can be a privilege rather than a right, after all.
âOne case turned out pretty bad... I wish I could have explained it better but he was dead set on seeing me gone from this world, you could say.â
A beep resounded above them and the door slid open at that point in time. It was then that Hideyoshi got up, turning towards his temporary companion.
âAnd I do believe that this is our stop. Where might you be headed?â
Chapter 1 | A Game of Cunning and Luck | Hideyoshi | [ATTN: đ ]
idyllicillusionistâ:
âOh~! Now that sounds quite an interesting thing to see. Iâve never quite witnessed a game myself, but I have tried the actual game out amongst the comfort of friendsâŚâ
They quietly chuckle to themself, almost with a nostalgic note at the end of it. It had been a while, hadnât it? When they were among familiar faces, laughing along to topics that they all had mutual interests in as they waited for the school bell to ring for their next classâ
Ah, what fond memories.
âAre your matches interesting, at least? Surely they must be. After all, it is your talent~.â
"Most people donât. I played karuta mostly before getting into hanafuda...â
It wasnât the same game at all. It really wasnât. He didnât have to give it up if he thought about it, but what use would it be to yearn to try an old hobby now with no resources and no people to play it against? Where could he get that former thrill?
He turns his head when they ask him about his matches.
âOh, itâs just banter mostly if you donât follow the cards. Iâm friends with most people I play against. If weâre not friends, we become fast friends soon. ...Mostly.â
Chapter 1 | A Game of Cunning and Luck | Hideyoshi | [ATTN: đ ]
idyllicillusionistâ:
Hopefully so. After all, who knows when đ is really sincere or not. When theyâre asked a question, they simply raise a hand to idly tap a finger on their chin once more, tilting their head ever-so-slightly to the side as if in thought.
âHmmmm. Perhaps, if thereâs no conflict in that~. Will there be any?â
âIâm just horribly curious about the interior of your talent lab, after all.â
âYou and me both, Nagareboshi-san.â
He lets out an airy chuckle beneath his breath. He looks out the windows of the train, watching as they speedily pass by tunnels-- labyrinths with no answers on where precisely they were. He swears sometimes thereâs something like another station but itâs hard to be sure.
âI fear itâs just literally documents and videos on my games. I am sure it would be easy to retrieve them if one has access to this much wealth...â
Chapter 1 | A Game of Cunning and Luck | Hideyoshi | [ATTN: đ ]
idyllicillusionistâ:
âYouâre quite a perceptive one, Kishi-san. I quite fancy that from people, you know.
They shoot him a wink, although it was very obvious it was casual in nature with the way they smiled. Sometimes they donât bombard people with flirtations, even if they found the other to be quite easy on the eyes, to say the least.
âItâs my pleasure to meet you, Kishi-san~. Since youâre on this train, are you perhaps planning to explore the new areas?â
âIs that so? Heheh, flattering.â
A rise in ego isnât too bad, and the hanafuda player wasnât one to worry too much over sincerity in such a harmless one-off encounter.
At their question, he nods.
âYes. A look at the maps given and it would be foolhardy of me to pass up the opportunity, you see. Are we headed to the same place perhaps?â
Swords & Hanafuda || Takeru || Chapter 1 || Closed: Hideyoshi
âSo this is a hanafuda player research lab?â
Looking around, Takeru walks over to the bar. He rummages through the drinks, finding a variety of nonalcoholic beverages. After that, he gets up and makes his way over toâ
âSamurai!â Takeru gasps and darts over to the samurai suits. He stands in front of one wielding a sword. âSword⌠how did I not see you when I first walked in?!â
Gently, Takeru places a finger on the point of the blade. After testing how sharp it was, he starts reaching for the handle. Just as heâs about to wrap his fingers around it, he can hear the warehouse doors opening.
The linguist looks over his shoulder to see whoâs there.
âHey Hideyoshi-kun!â He smiles. âYou didnât tell me there were swords in hanafuda!â
Is it weird to come back to the same place more than once when it doesnât provide anything you absolutely needed for survival or societal norms? Hideyoshi sure hopes not as he presses the big button to raise the warehouse doors.
It looks as if he is not alone this time in wishing to be here. Heâs a bit surprised at first considering the linguist hadnât even seemed to know what hanafuda was before they awoke here but after another moment of thought, he supposes maybe his search was out of curiosity. Curiosity as an answer explained why such a ditzy seeming spirit supposedly mastered so many languages.
And well, if the linguist was legitimately interested in his hobby when they were talking earlier, Hideyoshi wasnât going to complain.
âWell, I did not tell you because they normally are not. Flowers and animals, yes. Swords and spears? Less so!â He walks in, taking care to close the door behind him. As it descends back down to meet the floor, the cards player strides over towards the suits of armor.
âDo you know swordsmanship, Takeru-san?â A first name given in return for another first name seemed suitable... âI could teach you, though I do mean to teach you a game with hanafuda cards if youâre still open to it.â
Chapter 1 | A Game of Cunning and Luck | Hideyoshi | [ATTN: đ ]
idyllicillusionistâ:
âHmm, no oneâs really asked for it, so yes! Why, do you want to know~?â
She folds a leg over the other, giving a cutesy tilt of her head. Even though đ hadnât really expected for the other to make conversation with her, she was quite pleased by it. Then again, she was going to strike up a conversation with him if he hadnât done it first.
âYou must be the Hanafuda player, right~? Pleasure to meet you, Kishi-san~.â
âIs it not natural to wish to know someoneâs name? An identity is everything yet you lack one-- or rather, you refuse to give one.â
It sounds like an accusation and his expression is a bit hard just by nature of how much he wears his heart on his sleeve, or at the very least wears exaggerated faces, but his voice is rather impassive, his eyes curious.
âBut I guess thatâs an identity in itself, heh. A pleasure to meet you too, Nagareboshi-san. Iâm him, yes!â
CH1: SURVIVAL STRATEGY! : ryuunosuke_â hideyoshi
Welcome to Rock nâ Roll night! Welcome to Rock nâ Roll fight! Iâm just a Rock nâ Roll man! Weâre just a Rock nâ Roll band!
Many wouldnât consider Ryuunosuke a logical individual â to him, âlogicâ was often a matter of opinion. Rare moments such as this where his logic aligned with more rational individuals are probably precious, but checking out the newly opened areas seemed like nothing more than âcommon sense.âÂ
This room is huuuuge!
Standing in the middle of the area marked as the âSHSL Ambassador Research Lab,â he finds himself on a stage unlike any heâs ever experienced before. âŚNot that he was feeling particularly intimidated.
Actually, heâs more preoccupied with thoughts of the roomâs acoustics and the fact that thereâs absolutely no exit to outside the station to be found. âŚBut mostly the former.
âHELLOOOOOOOOOOOOO ZAWAME CITY!!â
Someone please help the eardrums of the poor individual who happened to walk in just now.
Well, now it wouldnât make sense to just spend all oneâs time in only one room -- even if it was dedicated to him. There was more to explore and one should never leave a single stone unturned! Imagine the foolish feeling one would endure when asked to speak on a matter he had simply ignored earlier?
Nearby is an ambassadorâs lab by the looks of their e-handbooks. It sounded like quite the dignified place, the kind of place his father and mother would no doubt like him to at least check out once.Â
He is opening the door, watching the garage door make its ascension up when heâs greeted by quite the loud outburst.
âH-Huh?! Um, hello?!? Wait...â
He clears his throat and starts again, much louder this time though not nearly as loud as his companion.
âHEEEEEEEEEE-LLO?!â
Someone help anyone who might be nearby while the entrance is still raised.
Guiding cards | Orpheus | Chapter 1 | ATTN: Hideyoshi
There was a lot to take in once Orpheus stepped into the research lab that belonged to the Hanafuda Player.
Although not accustomed to such traditionally eastern places himself, he did find himself relax almost automatically. There was simply something tranquil about the tatami mats and shoji doors.
However, this peaceful image was utterly disrupted by the slick bar in the back. To a degree, you could count the sets of armors as well, but at least they fit in thematically. The slick bar, however? It just felt so odd that he couldnât help but wish that it could be removed at once.
All of that aside, his attention had only remained on these things for but a moment, before his eyes lingered on the person already present in the premise. In a sense, it was unsurprising to see this particular man here - after all, a Hanafuda Player would feel right at home in such a place.
Although his smiles werenât as open as they had been prior to the mutual killing game announcement, he still considered it to be a duty to remain amiable and polite - where would they be if everything went to hell?
âGood day, Kishi-san. It is a pleasure to finally talk to you from face to face - even though our circumstances are concerning, to say the least.â
âI do hope you find a bit of solace in this place - it must be comforting to be surrounded by something that is so familiar to you, yes?â
An entire research lab dedicated to him? Hideyoshi honestly didnât know what to make of it just based on what their digital maps tell them. Something for him... would it have records on him? Would it kind of be like a mini museum?
Sure, thereâs probably a lot on him out there but... it was still kind of creepy? But also exciting! It was something just for him after all! Curiosity gets the better of him and he sneaks off to investigate it as soon as possible.
When he gets there, heâs not sure how long heâs been there ( itâs been a while since đ was in here with him, right? ) checking every nook and cranny but he at least isnât so absorbed in his investigation to fail to notice someone else coming in. He pops up from his crouching position behind the bar, looking up above the counter top's surface to see precisely who it was this time.Â
Memories... Memories... He searches them, still trying to get himself acquainted with the roster.
â...Orpheus-san, yes? Ah, wait one second!!!â
He hops over the bar and perfectly lands himself onto one of the stools in front of it as if he had been training for that stunt this whole time. He leans forward, one elbow on his knee and resting his chin on the palm of his hand.
âItâs definitely interesting. Though itâs kind of a weird combination of things... A mix of home and hobby. I donât know if I could blend the lines between those two... I donât know if youâd understand with your job. I bet you work at home, right?â
Chapter 1 | Those We Leave Behind
(tw: blood, gunfire)
âI will not stand for this!!â
You hear a loud yell from amongst you. Turning around, itâs apparent that it is the resident hanafuda player as he continues to yell.
âYou expect me to believe that a tap of the button will determine whether or not someone dies? When all this video is is just of them imprisoned?!â
âYes!â
âWhat kind of fool do you take me for?!â
Hideyoshi scoffs. He turns his gaze back to his e-handbook with a look of disdain across his face and continues to speak. Some of you might even be able to look over his shoulder or otherwise take a peek and see the prompt on his tablet screen: âWill you kill Atsuko Nikolaievich?â with a [YES] or [NO] option below it. Thereâs some small text at the bottom but itâs a bit hard to read from your position.
âI wonât be deterred by a bluff like this. It is nothing, surely. You will not scare me with theatrics and words alone!â
With that, he presses one of the buttons. His expression is stern as he watches but you watch as it drops completely at the sound of a gunshot. Any other audio had been quiet, seemingly nonexistent, from the video beforehand but this is audible to all of you in the dead silence of the station.
âN-No⌠This canât⌠This canât⌠I d-didnâtâŚ! I didnât!!â
His features become marred with anguish, with shock, and as he sputters, failing to come up with the power he did before, you understand what he has become etched with.
Despair.
Heâs trembling but he soon runs off in a mad dash, the clattering of his handbook the last thing he leaves you all with. Monokuma sighs and strides over, picking up whatâs been discarded.
âKnew it. At least itâs not damaged, I guess⌠Yikes.â
âFor anyone whoâs wondering, hereâs what he saw.â
He turns the pad and shows the video currently playing on the tablet. Itâs a small screen, but the sight of crimson floods your vision even if youâre standing faraway.
On the screen is a fancily dressed girl, some of which you might recognize as Atsuko Nikolaievich, a girl who has been admitted into Hopeâs Peak Academyâs winter roster for the 82nd Class. If you had done this research, you would also know her to be the upcoming Super High-School Level Duchess.
Or rather, she was going to be all that. Instead, she is lying against the wall of the cell with blood seeping out of a bullet hole in her chest, never to breathe again much less lead people or attend a prestigious academy.
Monokuma turns the pad away and passes it to A-30N, muttering an order for him to go deliver it back to the boyâs room. With that, the food court cashier whirs away.
âWell, thatâs all we had to tell you. Remember, three days is all youâve got.â
And he too whisks himself away. However, his presence leaving you all is not the thing that haunts this. No, instead if you were to look at the newly installed board on the wall, you would see the following sight:
ATSUKO AINARA - KILLED
