trick or treat!
expositor beauregard, casual
[image id: a full-body drawing of beauregard sitting down with one knee up and one leg bent on the ground. her right hand is up to her cheek and she’s smiling towards the right of the viewer. she’s wearing a similar outfit to her original official art, with a purple shirt, a blue scarf and ocean green pants. her hair is very long, pinned up in a high bun and falling onto her shoulder as a braid. the background is white with a plain light blue circle. end id]

i haven’t drawn him in so long
[image id: side profile of mollymauk, facing to the left, looking at the viewer with a grin. his purple skin and hair have pink and blue highlights; a collar of his coat can be seen, red with gold trimming. he’s wearing a bunch of golden jewelry and his hair is in a loose braid. the background is a rounded square with a pink and blue galaxy motive. end id]

Matt Mercer likes a tweet saying ‘blink twice if your hands are legally tied’ and there are still people trying to badger him to make an official statement against WOTC.
The only thing that comes out of that is Critical Role getting sued for contract violation.
For those confused: Orion D. Black, a non-binary black team member at DnD/WOTC quit and made a statement about the systemic issues they faced while working there, including being a diversity hire, being ignored, being passed over by white cis men for leadership positions and having ideas stolen by higher ups without credit, all while saying they (WOTC) support BLM and whatnot but not actually practicing what they preach. Here's the original tweet.
Now a lot of folks are talking about this and demanding WOTC make a statement, and people want Matt and Critical Role to say something about this/stop working with them (big ask but I get it) but they seem to be unable to because of contractual obligations.
I would also like to add that folks are not only talking about WOTC and the systemic issues within the company that have been brought to light because of Orion's experience, but the culture of racism and discrimination inherent in the lore and history of DnD and its books (just like every other fantasy anything written by white men, go figure).
This includes racist tropes such as dark-skinned humanoids (e.g.: drow, orcs, tieflings) = evil/savage/tribal/demonic. This is one example of many of how DnD perpetuates IRL negative stereotypes even in the fantasy world.
The templates given by DnD aren't always adhered to anymore, but there is that general concept or understanding people have in their heads about drow being inherently evil (or Different or Other) or for example orcs being somehow inherently violent, but they have a naturally 'better' alignment when they're half orcs (mixed with human). There's a bit of a gross comparison there with how white supremacists think about how black and POC folks are inherently bad or violent, along with all that blood purity shit they love so much (white blood is better etc.)
If you think about it, what do alignments have to do with race? Also why is it called "race"? (But that's a whole other chat). Anyway, it doesn't really make sense.
Obviously even in Critical Role, Matt does a good job of demonstrating what many already do.. as in keeping alignment separate from race (Kryn aren't evil, some good orcs) as well as having humanoid NPCs have multitude of skin colors, sexual orientations and gender expressions. But there's still things like calling Kryn "Kricks" (iirc) as a racial slur against the Kryn drow, which bless her heart Jester/Laura called tf out because it made her uncomfortable. It's too close to reality for comfort that the dark skinned drow are 'bad guys' and get called a slur, I felt the same way.
Personally, I've even had the experience in game while playing with white folks and playing a dark skinned tiefling character that I got some snide racist comments in game, and I'm sure many others have had something similar happen. I didn't super care (even though I'm not white) because it was in-game, but it's still like a bit of a slap in the face like... Damn, this is a fantasy game we all play as escapism from the ugliness of the world and where literally anything is possible.. can we just leave racism and discrimination out of it??
This got really long and a bit tangential because I care about this and think about it a lot and think others should be talking/thinking about it more too now. But anyway yeah this is the kind of thing people are trying to fix with DnD, not just how Orion got treated in the company for being black and LGBTQ+.
old clay fambly drawings i thought i might as well post bc they’ve been in my drafts for months……..these are from when i was watching the ep theyre introduced in so. the way i draw them looks different now, except for Clarabelle. she kinda looks the same.
