Artistic vision statement

In my opinion, design is not only a presentation of beauty but also a way of thinking and expression. I believe that design has a profound social influence and can be a bridge to solve problems and stimulate thinking. My artistic vision is to evoke people's resonance through design, stimulate their attention to social issues, and thereby trigger positive social change.

As a designer, I believe it is my responsibility to pay attention to social issues and give a voice to them through our designs.

In my daily study process, many excellent designers continue to influence me. There are some very valuable works that have brought me in-depth thinking and reflection. These works have brought substantial positive impact on social issues. , reflecting the real value behind the design.

For example, this work comes from concerns about environmental pollution. This work inspired me to think about the transformation and utilization of space, as well as how to solve social problems and lead a sustainable lifestyle.

This site used to be a huge oil depot. The environment was seriously polluted and the quality of life of residents was worrying.

Designer Richard Hager transformed it into a 'Gas Works Park’ not only to make the distribution of this area more reasonable but more importantly to bring practical effects and meanings behind it. The designer retained the naturalness and roughness of the grassland, embodying the design concept that although man and nature play their respective roles, they must be harmoniously juxtaposed.

Gas Works Park implements the design principle of "less is more". The work he completed under the condition of a low cost but a long period is not only a "static" garden landscape but also ensures the possibility of evolution due to the development and changes of the times and changes in public consciousness. It is a Design that is truly meaningful and has an impact on society.

I believe critical thinking plays a key role in the solution of this problem by designers. In-depth analysis first helps to understand the nature of the problem, and secondly, it can solve the problem in the design.

Beyond environmental issues, social inequality has always been a central concern for me. Based on the yearning for inclusion and equality. I hope that through design works, I can integrate elements from different cultures and backgrounds to bring some strength to all sectors of society moving forward together.

Concern for social issues will always run through my career. This is also my artistic vision to convey my views on social issues through design. I believe that in future study and practice, I will continue to challenge myself and explore more creative designs related to social issues. I hope that my works can also arouse people's thinking and inspire everyone's enthusiasm to participate in social change.

A Manifesto of Critical Thinking Skills as a Designer

In this rapidly developing world, I am not just a design practitioner, but also a social participant, a person who hopes to create a positive impact on society through design.

The design manifesto conveys the crystallization of my thinking and beautiful vision as a designer, and will also always remind me to move in a valuable direction.

My design vision is founded on the intersection of creative practice and critical thinking. Through my creative practice, I explore new design ideas to convey messages in unique ways. However, this does not mean that I blindly pursue originality, because critical thinking skills will allow me to take social phenomena and understand the root of the problem. Therefore, my design not only pursues artistry but also deeply reflects on and calls for social issues.

I respect the tradition of art, but I also dare to challenge it. I believe that we can draw inspiration from tradition and incorporate the wisdom of the past into contemporary design to create new sparks. I believe innovation is also part of heritage.

Regarding critical self-reflection, I know that design will not be perfect the first time but is a process of continuous improvement. I always maintain critical reflection on myself and constantly evolve. Design is a continuous learning process. Through critical self-reflection, I can learn from failures, constantly improve my design concepts, and improve my design level. Every attempt will be a growth.

Regarding artistic vision, as a designer, we should embrace diversity. Draw inspiration from different cultures and integrate diverse elements, because I understand that my design is not only an individual expression, but sometimes a universal language. At the same time, my design vision focuses on holistic human needs and emotions. My artistic vision is not only concerned with beautiful forms, but also the substantial impact of design on life. Design is not only my profession but also a creative medium for me to dialogue with society.

In my designs, creative practice and critical thinking blend, which I believe results in a unique design philosophy. Through this design philosophy, I look forward to leading society in a positive direction through my work.

As our manifesto states, creation and critical thinking go hand in hand, which I believe can give my designs more depth and impact, and bring real value.

Connecting Practice with Society

Art and design are not only a discipline but also a medium to express and influence society.

Our short film project in class is a great example. We use art and design techniques, including photography, typography, music, and visual effects, to present our perspectives and reflect on social issues.

In the process of group cooperation, we chose the topic of environmental health and personal quality. We collect a lot of information and then use images to convey our message. In the process, I also learned the importance of teamwork, as everyone has different insights and skills, which all have a positive impact on the final product. We discussed how to use visual messages to arouse the audience's attention to environmental issues, and learned to communicate concerns about social issues in creative ways.

As a designer, I hope that my works are not only creative, but also able to connect with society, convey information, and trigger thinking. Therefore, I strive to incorporate this belief into my practice.

The process of creating this short film made me realize that visual media can be a powerful communication tool. We learned how to use visual stories to convey an important social message, and also realized the connection and impact that practice can have on society.

Connecting Theory and Practice

Design is not just about beauty, but also about conveying message and meaning.

The connection between practice and theory is important as it demonstrates your ability to use evidence to increase your understanding of key concepts, justify your decision making, and inform future practice. The strength of this theory-practice connection also contributes to the evidence of your critical thinking and growth.

For example, in class, we learned various design theories and principles, which provided us with the basic knowledge of design. In practice, I try to apply these theories to various projects, which allows me to continuously consolidate theoretical knowledge and exercise my creativity at the same time.

Creativity is constantly exercised in practice. I am able to expand my creativity by trying new methods and techniques. In craft classes, for example, we are often encouraged to try different materials and media, which helps stimulate new creative thinking.

Classroom activities also play a key role in linking theory and practice. In the CTSB classroom, we are often organized into practical projects. We can better understand theoretical knowledge through practical creations, and it also stimulates our creativity. Additionally, critical thinking skills have impacted my practice. Through it, I learned to examine works of art, ask questions, analyze meaning, and be inspired by them. This way of thinking makes me a more insightful designer and better able to communicate my points.

Connecting theory and practice is key to becoming a successful designer. The theoretical knowledge learned in the classroom is just the beginning, real growth occurs in daily practice. I think interacting with classmates, mentors, and the arts community, as well as participating in various design projects, were important steps in helping me shape my personal creative identity.

Creative Practice and Critical Thinking

Creativity is closely related to critical thinking. In class, we often make our works public and share our opinions and suggestions, which helps us see the shortcomings in our works and find ways to improve them.

Critical thinking permeates every aspect of creative practice and creative development. Creative practice is catalytic in the acquisition and growth of the skills, dispositions, habits, values and virtues central to growth in complexity of critical thinking. 

In the design profession, these two are very important skills. Designers need to innovate but also remain sensitive to audience needs and design principles. This requires us to constantly reflect and adjust during the creative process. For example, when designing posters, I try to use bright colors and bold typography to attract the audience's attention. However, I also have to consider the clarity of the message and whether the audience can understand my intention.

As art and design students, we often need to imagine, conceive and put our ideas into practice.

For example, in this class, in the process of creating this story, I not only had to use creative ways to construct plots and characters but also considered how to use critical thinking to delve into the root causes and solutions of environmental pollution. I did some research on environmental issues to make sure my story was accurate in conveying its message.

Through story creation and sharing, I realized that creating a unique piece of art can draw attention to something, and critical thinking ensures that the idea can actually be applied to solve a problem. This reminds me that we need to make sure our ideas actually solve problems and don’t just stay on the surface.

Both help us express ourselves in innovative ways and make a positive impact on social issues. I will continue to develop both abilities to continue exploring and creating.

Poststructuralism

The core of post-structuralism opposes the centrality of meaning, and it faces a pluralistic and open world of meaning.

It held that language is not a transparent medium that connects one directly with a “truth” or “reality” outside it but rather a structure or code, whose parts derive their meaning from their contrast with one another and not from any connection with an outside world.

The field of design also has its own language, so this thought made me think that the completion and interpretation of a final work may be affected by many ideological biases, such as gender, race and class.

Design calls into being as a medium of communication configured by design elements that are channelizing signifiers towards the rest of the world; therefore almost any kind of the product of design becomes as reality through which the addressee and designer communicate; referred as an 'interface '.

Based on this idea, people's interpretation of the work is like a free space where they can move, so I need to consider how to connect the design language together with the Receivers to engage in meaningful communication. I believe that actively obtaining feedback and always paying attention to the projections generated by the audience should run through the concept development process of my entire design project.

When my partner and I combined the pictures and words we took together, although they were not originally related, they had a wonderful meaning. Although this person is not healthy, he may feel a little comfort when he is bathed in the sun in the corner. This is my interpretation projected from the perspective of the audience.

In a work, designers can deconstruct and reorganize objects and spaces, expressing design concepts and spiritual pursuits with a powerful sense of space.

Post-structuralism brings the focus back to the content itself. Instead of pursuing a definite meaning, we accept and embrace the multiple meanings that a work may bring.
