“scoot over.”

“Sure, what are we watching?” Henry asked Reece, before he moved to give him space on the couch. They were at the shorter male’s living room that was practically bigger than Henry’s entire apartment. Picking some popcorn from the bowl, the student started eating slowly. He smiled to himself as Reece chose to sit next to him, close enough that their knees bumped on each other. It was a large room, he could’ve picked any other seat.

“i’m cold.”

“Oh? Hold on.” Henry was quick to take out his jacket and put in on Reece after hearing his comment. They were walking home together after a shift in the shelter, talking about a new litter of puppies that had arrived and how two of them had gotten new homes already. It seemed like a natural thing to do, he didn’t even think much about it. The jacket looked a bit big on Reece, duo to their height difference. “Better now?” He asked, smiling softly.

reece finds the pout quite endearing. there was a playfulness to henry that he enjoyed and it often showed itself in cute ways such as that. “i guess i will.” the wink, though he knows is just for fun, makes the male blush and forces him to look away. the last time he’d been this coy was when he first started dating eden. he’d hadn’t feel these kinds of nerves in a long time apart from his boyfriend. mostly, he chucked it up to the fact that he’d been stood up and just wanted to feel nice. he didn’t want to think about it too much. almost as though god knew he needed a distractions, the umbrella was doing a good job of making him laugh as henry struggled with it. the rain wasn’t letting up either so as henry tried his best to fix the umbrella, they were getting soaked. “well we can’t just stand here.” the shorter male looks around for a second before pulling henry along with him to stand under the overhang of a door to a closed store. “if i knew we’d be getting this wet i would’ve stayed back at the bar.” he teases the other with a light laugh, and shakes his hair to get some of the water out of it. “

“It’d also be cool if you said that I recommended the place, that could make me win some points with the manager.” Henry said, smiling. Looking up at Reece just in time to see him blush, the smile on his lips got bigger. The student enjoyed getting that reaction from him. Following his gaze as Reece was looking for shelter, Henry nodded and walked with him until they were under the overhang of the door. There wasn’t much space available, which made them stand close to each other. “I’m getting wet too, in case you haven’t noticed.” Henry countered, laughing a bit. “And we’re closer to your house now?” He asked, laughing more as he watched the other shake his hair to get the water out. “Hey! Don’t spill more water on me, that’s not helping.”

“oh i can definitely tell them to pile on the work if that’s what you want. just say the word.” reece jokes. he wasn’t wrong though. they always found it best to not give volunteers too much to handle before they got the hang of things. it was best to get a little help rather than no help at all. “the good place. hm~ I don’t think I’ve been there before but i’ll definitely check it out sometime. hope you’re not lying to me, henry. liars don’t get tips.” he teases. it was strange how comfortable he felt in the other’s presence despite barely knowing him. he wasn’t the type to let his guard down very often, let alone this easily. maybe it was the fact that snow had liked him too and the kitty was very picky with the people she liked. nevertheless, despite the rough winds, reece had nearly forgotten about how bad the weather was. he ‘awes’ as he hears more about snow- but his mind goes elsewhere as henry’s umbrella get’s turned inside out. “oh my-” he stifles a laugh because this really wasn’t meant to be funny. not when that was the only thing separating them from the rain.

“That’s not what I meant!” Henry chuckled softly shaking his head. “I’m quite happy with my workload at the moment. Don’t be mean.” He teased, sending Reece a small pout. “Great, my shifts are usually in the afternoon. And well, I guess you’ll have to find that out on your own.” The student countered, sending the other a playful wink. Who would have thought he could have such a great time just talking to Reece? But their talk was suddenly interrupted when a strong gush of wind makes his umbrella turn inside out, making them both get instantly soaked. “Ugh, I’m sorry!” Henry exclaimed, while trying to fix the problem, pulling down the stems one by one. Getting frustated as that wasn’t working, the student sighed in defeat as he looked up at Reece and started laughing as well. It shouldn’t be funny, they were getting drenched, their umbrella didn’t work and he was really feeling the cold now, but somehow it still was. “What do we do now?”

“you’re a busy man, aren’t you? i’m glad you’re liking it there though. it’s tough work sometimes but it’s fun being around all the pets also. anyway, where do you work?” reece was amazed at how henry was able to juggle a job, volunteering, school, and a new pet all at once. the shelter alone sometimes took all of reece’s energy. he couldn’t imagine having to manage all of what henry took on at once. he’d be too stressed out to function. reece’s eyes lit up as henry began talking about snow. oh, how he had missed her. she’d always been his favorite since he’d met her but he was glad she had finally found her forever home with someone who seemed to be generous and caring. his excitement skyrocketed at the mention of pictures. “please?” he eagerly pleaded. “I bet she’s grown a lot by now. not so tiny anymore, huh?”

“I guess you could say that.” Henry replied, sending Reece a shy smile. “Don't know if it's because I'm still new and they didn't want to scare me away but they've been taking it easy on me so far.” The student said in a playful tone. He really wasn't giving that much work at the shelter yet. “Oh, I'm a barista at The Good Place, it's a small café down at North Avenue. You should come by, rumour has it we have the best signature drinks in the region. I'd say it's worth checking out.” As they talked, he momentarily forgot the discomfort of the strong wind blowing and the loud occasional thunder rumbling above. Being with Reece made him feel better. Looking up at the other, Henry grinned as he saw how the shorter male's whole face seemed to lit up at the mention of Snow. “Of course, I'll show you the recent ones. She did, quite fast too. I miss tiny Snow, she could fit in the most improbable places. One of her favorites was between the couch's cushions.” He gushed, as they kept walking forward towards Reece's place.

“Thanks.” he’s grateful not only that henry had been so kind to offer to bring him back home, but that thankfully there was enough space under that umbrella for the both of them. “we can just keep going straight for now.” reece replies looking up at the other- almost not wanting to look away from the other’s smile but he forces himself to. “um-” shit. the sight alone had left him dazed to the point he couldn’t even for a single thought or sentence. he chuckles and shakes it off. “good. keeping busy at the pound i guess. i see you didn’t bail on me. i was worried you’d never show yourself again. it’s really kind that you’re helping out.” he praises. “but how have you been? how’s snowball?” 

Henry nodded in acknowledgement as Reece thanked him before speaking again. “Copy that.” The way the other was staring at him made a small blush appear on his cheeks which, in turn, had Henry looking down for a moment to try and conceal it. “Oh no, I wouldn’t have done that. Just took me a while to come over because I was adjusting to a new working schedule. But I really love helping out at the shelter. It’s therapeutic even, spending some time with the pups and cats.” He grinned. “I’ve been good as well, just been kinda busy with my final exams coming. And Snow’s great! She likes cuddling and sleeping on my arms these days. She’s also really curious and likes to explore and find new places in the apartment. I think she adapted pretty wel.” Henry talked as they kept on walking. “I have new pics, can show you once we stop.”

Reece was hesitant. What if Eden was just running late- really late? What if he showed up soon and he wasn’t there? Reece could come up with a dozen more reasons to stay, namely bc he was hopeful Eden would show. But the truth was this wasn’t the first time a date had slipped his mind and Reece knew he was just being blindly optimistic. It was best to go home. He reaches out accepting the help and in that moment he hears the thunder’s roar which makes him flinch and squeeze the Henry’s hand. “sorry.” he chuckles nervously. “my house isn’t far from here. just a couple blocks down.” he reassures the other. 

Henry was glad to see Reece take his hand, he wouldn’t have felt good about leaving the other on his own when there was a storm coming. “No worries.” The student reassured him, chuckling as well as he thought the shorter’s male reaction was cute. He moved to the side to give Reece room to stand under his umbrella before they started walking. “Alright, where should we go first?” Henry questioned, smiling. “How have you been lately? It's been a while since we last talked.”
