i love you so much if you are diabetic, or pre-diabetic. our society treats diabetes so poorly. it's such a readily mocked condition, people often times resort to blaming the individual for having it, even going so far as to pass judgment on the diabetic's character, regardless of what type of diabetes they have.

diabetics are wonderful and deserve to love themselves regardless of whether or not they 'gave' themselves their diabetes. whether or not the person is "unhealthy" whether or not the person eats "right" or knows how to eat in ways that are safer for their body doesn't matter, they still deserve love, respect, and compassion.

diabetes is not a fucking judge of character. diabetics deserve better. diabetics deserve respect. diabetics deserve to be recognized as disabled. diabetics deserve kindness, love, care, compassion, and support. no matter what.

if you've been putting up with toxic or abusive behaviors for months or years and you finally snap - it's not your fault. you're not a bad person. you aren't secretly cruel, you're just hurt enough that your fight-or-flight finally chose fight.

they will tell you otherwise. they will sob to you about how you're the problem. they will suddenly throw a book of sins at you - how you're manipulative, shouty, or whatever other thing fits their narrative. sometimes this will work, and you'll find yourself apologizing - usually for hours, days, months. i want you to write down when that happens, because it will help you let go when it's time to leave.

they will attack you on every front. they will re-write the entire encounter so that you are the aggressor. they will be horrified if you call it gaslighting, but you will know it's gaslighting because it's a stage beyond lying. genuinely, your world feels impossible and fake; like everything they see is somehow different than what you are seeing. (if it's legal in your state and you can get away with it without being caught, consider recording your arguments and listening back when you're safe).

they will try to imply you have mental health issues, or that you're deeply troubled and just unaware of it. it doesn't matter how kind, serene, and well-adjusted you are - they will make you feel crazy.

and the thing is that it works, because they are why you feel crazy. abusers particularly love targeting neurodivergent or otherwise minoritized populations. they love being able to point to any traumatic history you have. they will cite real things you experienced (panic attacks, depressive episodes) as evidence you're unwell.

they will figure out how to trigger you. if the silent treatment gets you riled enough to apologize, they will ice you out. whatever it is, they will figure out how to make you beg to just talk, and then act like it is a gift they're giving you another chance.

and since most of the time you're a regular guy, it's really hard to ignore the above multi-pronged attack. many of us do feel bad when we lash out or snap. we do feel shame and guilt. we spend our time wondering - was that demon inside me all this time? am i the reason this person usually acts like this?

just... stay strong and trust your own memories. write things down after they happen, as soon as you can. trust in your own anger and rage. remember you just aren't the kind of person who would snap like that without true force. "even a worm will turn". a wolf cannot be kept on a chain its whole life: at some point, we must bite back.

When I moved out of my mom's house to live with my dad, I was terrified constantly. I asked for permission to get a glass of water, or food from the fridge. It took me almost a year to feel comfortable doing survival tasks without asking for permission, and I STILL struggle with it sometimes, even though it's been like 7 years. This isn't stuff that just goes away overnight, but it DOES get better, and you are not alone.

I used to be paralysed by this exact thing - and no one has ever put it into words before in a way that makes me think “yes, this person knows exactly what I experience”. It’s been 8 years since I started healing and addressing this problem. I still have days where I find myself with this same old mindset, but I am getting better at employing the techniques my therapist taught me, and sometimes I am able to get out of that trauma trap.

I know I don’t owe any of you anything but I still felt compelled to write about my long term absence. And I feel far enough away from the dangerous spot I was in to be able to make this comic. I have a therapist now, and she agreed that making this could be a very cathartic gesture, and the start of properly leaving these thoughts behind me. I am still, at seemingly random times, blindsided by fleeting desires to kill myself. They’re always passing urges, but it’s disarming, and uncomfortable. I worry sometimes that my brain’s spent so long thinking only about suicide that it’s forgotten how to think about anything else. Like, now that I've opened that door for myself, I'll never be able to fully shut it again. But I’m trying my best to encourage my mind in other directions. We'll see how that goes.

I am still donating all proceeds from my store to Palestinian causes. So far, I've donated over $15K, not including donations coming from my own pocket or the fundraising streams which jointly raised around $10K. In the time since I made my initial post about where this money would be going, the focus has shifted from aid organisations to directly donating to escape funds.

If you'd like to do the same, you can look at Operation Olive Branch, which hosts hundreds of Palestinian escape funds or donate to Safebow, which has helped facilitate the safe crossing and securing of important medical procedures for over 150 at-risk palestinians since the beginning of the genocide.
