🎃 Halloween/Samhain Aesthetic ~ Aurelien 🎃
Shades and Shadows
@the-girl-with-shad0ws
“Yes, please do. I am curious about them as well,” he said, giving her shadows permission to climb on him. He was very much intrigued by them, and wondered if they would at all learn anything of him simply by touching him. He and Aurelien had bonded so much in that manner over the years. The mixing of souls with shadowstuffs was quite a powerful thing. He surmised that they would see much darkness in him, but how much exactly, he could not say. If there was anything left of the joy his wife Thelice and the birth of his son had brought him centuries ago, then perhaps there would be some light mixed in with all that darkness. “Interesting…” Sri’hen said, losing himself in the implications of Jordan’s explanation of mutants as he watched her shadows traverse him. “So it would seem that after all this time, the human race is evolving… again.”
“Oh-ho!” Aurelien interjected triumphantly. “Is that the incredible and perfect Sri’hen I hear admitting that his superior Ulaeri bloodlines originated in human ones? I did not quite catch that. Perhaps… you should say it louder, so that we can be sure to understand you. Are you finally admitting that the Ulaeri evolved from humans?”
“Well of course we did. We are a more perfect evolutionary path. I have never denied that,” Sri’hen said.
“And that, Jordan, is what we call a lie,” Aurelien said.
“It is not a lie. It is the truth as I see it and as fits best within the contexts of this conversation,” he said nonchalantly.
“‘Stretched truths and sugar coatings aside, were you to eat me, I would still die,’ said rabbit to fox,” Aureilen recited.
“Call it what you will, paladin,” Sri’hen said with a strange sort of antagonistic affection toward his shade friend. He even ventured to smile. But then he slipped a cell phone out of his pocket, his silver eyes looking this way and that at the screen.
“She is not going to answer you. You are being rude to your guest,” Aurelien said.
“And why should she not?” Sri’hen asked without looking up.
“If you must ask that question, then your mind had truly deteriorated with age,” the shade said flatly.
Sri’hen put his phone away with a frustrated sigh. “Very well, mutant. Welcome to the ranks of higher evolved organisms.
“You only say your superior and evolved because no one has yet challenged that fact or you for that matter.” Jordan deadpanned. It wasn’t the fact that it bothered her but to call someone superior proved that he was arrogant and prideful. Those did not yield good combinations when used together.
Her shadows rustled and climbed on him and instantly, her mind was flooded with emotions. Darkness was prominent along with a lingering joy but.. loneliness was present. As they climbed up and down Sri'hen’s arms, they shuffled and fluttered in sympathy.
Looking up at Sri'hen, she softens her look before gently asking, “Why do you feel lonely?”
Sri’hen did not answer Jordan at first. It was difficult to discuss such things with a total stranger, after all. Also, he knew Aurelien had no problem dispensing his private affairs to anyone he wished. He sighed and merely watched the shadows, finding them fascinating. A gentle furrow appeared in his brow.
“He has empty nest syndrome,” Aurelien said. “His son recently moved out. But really, Sri’hen has been lonely for years. His wife and stepdaughter passed long ago and he missed them still. They were lycanthropes, you see, and so they only had lifespans of about a century and a half. His son fortunately takes more after him with regard to lifespan, and so had a robust three and a half centuries to work with. Being a mage, he was then able to extend his natural lifespan, just as Sri’hen has done.”
Sri’hen did not protest any of this, or even react to it. He only continued to focus on the little shadows dancing over arms, turning his arms this way and that slowly to play with the playful shadows a little.
“And his recent attempts to reconnect with an old enemy have been, as expected, fruitless,” Aurelien continued.
“There is no reason why she should not answer me,” Sri’hen said flatly.
“There are plenty of reasons,” Aurelien said. “And are you quite certain that Channe even knows how to answer her phone?”
“Well if that is the reason why she is not answering, she should be ashamed of herself. I am sure Vincent has taught her how to use a smart phone by now,” Sri’hen said.
“If the old elf knows how to use one himself,” Aurelien added.
“He can ask his god for assistance,” Sri’hen said darkly.
“Do not be rude, now. That god is the reason your son lives at all,” Aurelien said.
Sri’hen did not respond to that last comment. Instead, he returned to the subject of his loneliness. “It is too quiet. I do not like to be alone.”
“And what am I? Stale bread?” Aurelien huffed.
“You… are gone much of late,” Sri’hen said.
“Because you never want to do anything anymore. I am an anxious shade. I need my exercise,” Aurelien insisted.
“How did your shadows know how I felt without speaking to me?” Sri’hen asked now, looking to Jordan for answers. He was quite impressed.
Questions for Muns of OC Muses

What is the cutest aspect of your muse?
What is the most frightening aspect of your muse?
What is the happiest aspect of your muse?
What is the most tragic aspect of your muse?
Where does your muse see themself in ten years?
For OC muses made for a preexisting movie, book or TV show fandom, how does your muse fit into the story?
What plots/interactions leave you feeling protective of your muse?
What is one aspect of your muse’s development that you hope for? What would you like to see happen to them?
What do you hope never happens to your muse? What would you consider to be the worst case scenario outcome for them?
Is it possible for Aurelien to shapeshift?
I guess it depends on what you mean by shapeshifting. If you literally mean, can he change shape... then yes he can. Usually he’s just a black cloud with eyes, but he often takes a more humanoid shape, still made of black mist though. If you asked him, he could probably replicate any shape he wanted with a bit of concentration.
If you want to know if he can take solid form, no. He will always be made of shadowstuffs with two rubies, heh. And energy. That’s all he is. He can’t possess anyone and control them either. He’s not a ghost or a demon, either a disembodied soul or an incorporeal but living creature, respectively. He’s incorporeal undead, so he is his own separate creature and cannot take the place of a soul or inhabit a human body.
Ask the Mun anything you’ve wanted to know about their character. They MUST answer!

[a-very-proper-shxde] Aurelien floated toward the unknown female, cautiously and silently. He was always apprehensive about approaching people, for they almost always took him for some evil being, or at least one who meant them harm. Really though, he was just lost. he had no idea where he was and needed a bit of direction. Perhaps this female could assist him...? "Pardon me, madam," Aurelien said politely, "but I seem to have lost my way. Have you any idea where I am? Er, we? Where we are?"
Alexa sat quietly at a haven she had found earlier in the day, sketching the tree line while she still had daylight to work by. She had completed a simple hunt and was winding down for the day. So she wasn’t expecting anyone to come along, especially with it getting so close to dark. She jumped up with a gasp, then right out screamed as she looked at the strange… thing floating near her. She grabbed her bow as fast as she could and took aim at the creature, intending to kill, thinking it was a daemon. But something kept her from firing her arrow; well, more than one something’s.
One being that it was still daylight, so that outright ruled it out as being a daemon. That, and it was inside the haven with her, something daemons could not do. And it spoke. Not just fragments of a sentence but clear words, like it had an intelligence. So she simply stared at the creature, unsure what to do but not trusting it enough to lower her weapon. “What the hell are you? And how did you get in the haven?” she demanded, keeping her eyes trained on the shadowy figure.

@corxigne
Aurelien felt even worse for snapping when he heard her apology. “No, madam, I owe you an apology. I am far older than you and I should be wiser and more mature. It is only that I get so frustrated when I am viewed as evil, or as a demon, or as something entire dangerous or unholy, when really I am none of that. Yes, my body consists of negatively charged shadowstuffs that is basically shadow essence that you would find existing residually all over the Shadow Realm… which is populated mostly by shadow-related wildlife and demons. I am aware of that. And yes, I am technically considered an undead creature. However, my soul, my mind, and my no-longer-physical heart are all that of a paladin, a soldier of light, truth, innocence, and virtue. I am and wish to be nothing else, it is only that I have been cursed with this visage and existence and I am wholly unable to undo it. That… was most likely the intention of the man who did this to me. To torture me with this horrible existence for eternity.” He sighed. “So I do apologize if it is a sensitive issue about which I can become quite immature at times. Thousands of years of hearing the same things from people… tends to hurt a man. Er… shade. It is a massively and hopelessly lonely existence, I assure you.”
“Eh… The demons from my world… or time – the gods only knows how lost I have become – come in all shapes and sizes, and not all of them are evil. All demons are, are beings whose energies and physical bodies, if they possess one, are comprised of negatively charged and or unholy essences. I have known some creatures taxonomically classified as demons who were little more than one foot tall wisps of smoke aesthetically not unlike myself who loved to play all day and did not bother anyone. On the other hand, I’ve known the bodiless, spiritual sort that will possess a person in order to harm them or others, who toy with minds and hearts, and who cause insanity and illness. And finally I have known some large, physically massive brutes who could tear the head off a man in seconds with very little effort. But what I have learned is that one’s body and energy do not make him good or evil. It is his heart. Water can sustain life, or it can drown. Fire can warm, or it can burn. Creatures made wholly of positive energy can blind with their light or be angels that assist the innocent. So, too, can creatures made of negative energy prefer to be left alone or be entirely misunderstood... … …like myself. Energy itself is not evil. Morality comes into play with the decisions one makes regarding the use of that energy. I take every individual on a case-by-case basis.”
“Intelligence is sometimes an issue. Mindless beings tend to be more dangerous and unpredictable. And of course I understand that I do not know what year this is or where I am right now, and thus the demons you refer to may be an entirely new species or some other state of being of which I am wholly unaware. And you are, of course, entitled to be defensive if these creatures have injured you or those you care about in the past. I am only viewing life from a much different perspective than yours, is all.”
He floated a few feet away, to give her some space, especially after she said she did not want to touch him. “It is perfectly alright, madam, I merely wanted to give you the option. Some find that experiencing things makes them… less scary. Others take my word for it. I shall list you in the latter category, then. “Truly it would not hurt if you did, though. I could choose to make it hurt, but I do not do that unless I am very much threatened, and humans do not usually pose much of a threat. But I am able to concentrate my energy into a shock. Anything from a small bit of static shock to almost at the level of lightning. It is… perhaps the only defense I have against those who threaten me. It tires me, however, and so I save it for emergencies. I wonder if it would work against these demons of which you speak…?”
“Sunlight does not kill me, although it is not good for me to be out in it for too long. My shadowstuffs are cool and moist, and so remaining in strong sun for an hour or too would warm up and burn off much of them. Once… I was held in a magical trap by an unkind person who thought they could kill me with sunlight. He left me there all day only to return to find that my shadowstuffs were completely gone but for two tiny wisps, one attached to each of my eyes. What an unpleasant experience. It took me three days to regenerate my shadowstuffs in full. Fortunately, he did not possess the ability to truly kill me. One would have to dispel my eyes. They are the source of my power, you see, and what binds my soul to this incorporeal undead body. Er… cloud… of shadowstuffs. They are, in actuality, two large rubies that my adversary utilized in the dark ritual that transformed me into a shade. The energy of the spell was infused into the rubies and my spirit was forever bound by it. That is why they glow as they do. What you are seeing is the binding magic of that original dark ritualistic spell. At my age, it would take very powerful magic of dispelling to strip the gems of their energy and obliterate me, but it could be done.” He was quiet for a moment, and then, “I trust you not to abuse this knowledge, of course.”

“I… I was human once, yes,” he said sadly. “A paladin, in fact, in serve to a sun god of sorts. Humans have long since forgotten about him. Such a shame. Nevertheless, an enemy of mine transformed me into the creature you see before you as part of a dark ritual to his own deity, a god of corruption. That is… probably the simplest explanation I can afford you without confusing you too much.”
“You have seen… weirder things than me?” Aurelien asked, truly surprised she had said that. “Well… that is something I certainly do not hear every day. What a breath of fresh air it is to not be screamed at for one. I do not breathe, actually, but if I did I am sure the air would be quite fresh.”
“Pardon me, madam, but I am not familiar with average, everyday teenage activities. I am not a teenager myself, you see, and the last time I was one was… well, almost a millennia ago. I can scarcely be expected to remember such times, now can I? But why were you making up your work? Did you not complete it as required on time? You know, young lady, punctuality and reliability are very good skills to develop early on in life. As you age, it only becomes harder,” Aurelien said in a fatherly tone.
“Well now, see here…” he said when she suggested that he leave. “I am harming no one and breaking nothing. I do not see why I should be ousted with such extreme prejudice. And I do not possess a tail with which to hightail at all, so there shall be none of that,” he huffed. “What do you mean it isn’t the nicest place to observe? I am having a nice conversation with you, aren’t I?”
❝ Uh..okay. ❞ Veronica was admittedly, and rather noticeably confused with the explanation, but she didn’t press the matter further. Instead, she focused on Aurelien and nodded, giving a little shrug as she spoke up. ❝ Yeah. You aren’t the scariest, or weirdest thing around here. ❞ She didn’t exactly seem keen on explaining herself, judging by her brief, and vague answer. At the mention of her work, the girl chuckled a bit upon detecting the fatherly tone of the creature in front of her, but otherwise gave a nod of understanding; Veronica had manners at least, unlike most people around her age, let alone at this school.
❝ No, I’m punctual with my work. I was just absent the other day; don’t worry, I don’t scramble to do everything last minute like most. I’m kinda shooting for Harvard, Duke, or Brown so I’ve avoided the bad habit of late work. ❞ This student was seeking education at prestigious colleges; she was a fairly intellectual gal at that. She couldn’t help but smile in amusement for a moment, but that smile faded when she realized she’d have to explain Westerberg to this stranger.
❝ Well..thing is, I might be nice but a good chunk of the students here aren’t like that. If you wanna watch jocks smack lunch trays out of a student’s hands or pin a kid down in the hallway, then I guess this is a suitable place. People here aren’t the friendliest with eachother, that’s all. ❞
“Oh. Well, then. Good for you. It is so nice to hear about a young person who is studious and cares about his or her future. It is becoming increasingly rarer and rarer nowadays, if you ask me,” Aurelien said. “Keep up with your studies. Education is one’s greatest weapon and defense in life. That was true centuries ago, and it is still true today.”
His shadowstuffs pulsated nervously around him. “Um… But… Now let us talk a little bit about why you want to shoot these Harvard, Duke, and Brown fellows. What have they done to deserve your wrath? And you know… crime will put a stop to whatever plans for the future you might think you have if you end up getting arrested for it and going to jail… I encourage you to reconsider,” he warned, the true meaning of what she had said flying right over his misty head.
“Well that doesn’t sound very nice at all,” Aurelien said, surprised to hear about other students’ unruly behavior. Does no one discipline mean and disruptive children here?” He thought for a moment. “Hmm… very well, I suppose I should leave. Have you any suggestions on where I might go? I am bored, you see. That is why I came here in the first place. It is not a good thing when I am bored, no madam, not at all. When I become bored, I become… mischievous. In an attempt to alleviate that I thought to occupy my mind by exploring here, but if you say that here is… not an ideal place to explore, then where would you suggest?”
[a-very-proper-shxde] Aurelien floated toward the unknown female, cautiously and silently. He was always apprehensive about approaching people, for they almost always took him for some evil being, or at least one who meant them harm. “Wait!” Inwardly she cursed herself for speaking up, but she could not just let it go out by itself, especially so close to night. “I.. I didn’t say I wouldn’t help you. Just that I don’t trust you. You can at least stay here for the night. In fact, you should stay. There are dangerous things that come out at night, and if what you say is true and you’re really not from around here, then it’ll be that much easier for them to pick you off. So… just, stay the night and tomorrow… well we’ll figure it out.” She lowered the bow to her side, still keeping a tight grip but trying to look less intimidating.
She half could not believe she was doing this. Who cares what happened to it? It was not human and was most likely not of this world, so why should it bother her if daemons got it? Well, it did bother her. For stupid reasons she did not care to think about. She just knew she could not let something as kind as it seemed to be out alone with no protection of any kind. She was a bitch but she was not that heartless. “I promise, I won’t harm you so long as you promise to do the same.” she vowed sincerely.
“Oh, now you wish to offer a bit of kindness, do you?” Aurelien said, whirling around. As soon as he said it, however, he knew he had been a jerk. “Forgive me… madam… that was… uncalled for. It has been a very long day and I am embarrassed that I have not only lost myself geographically but apparently in time as well, and… and I am a wee bit perturbed at the moment. I did not mean to take it out on you.”
“To be clear, you aimed an arrow at me first without me doing anything to you, so I do not overly trust you either. I assume it is laced with some sort of… incorporeal creature… repellent?” he asked awkwardly. He groaned in frustration. “Very well, if you are concerned about my welfare, I shall remain here, although I have battled my fair share of demons in the past and have always come out on top. Beyond that, the advantage of looking like one usually affords me some anonymity with their kind, or at least, they lack the interest or annoyance to attempt to kill me.”
“Right.” He spun around, the red glowing orbs that were his eyes facing this way and that as he inspected where he was. “Um. By… ‘stay the night…’ you mean… what exactly? I do not sleep, nor could I lie down anywhere if I tried, so… could you perhaps direct me to whichever corner of this establishment you would prefer me to hover in until morning. I will not cause any problems at all. I am not looking to be shot with any magically-laced arrows tonight.”
“My name is Aurelien, as you already know from my disgraceful outburst,” he said with a bit of embarrassment in his voice. “If I asked your name would you give it? You see I am not a demon, for having a demon’s name gives one some dominion over it. Thus, it will never tell, unless pressed through magical or religious means. I care not who has my name, for it does me no harm to give it. Yet still you probably do not believe me. Am I right? Hmm… What else could I do to prove my harmlessness to you? Feel free to touch my shadowstuffs and see that they are not harmful. It will feel like a cool, misty, cloud. It is an odd feeling to have humans just… stick their hands in there, though, so be quick about it. I certainly promise I will not harm you. I never had any such intention in the first place.”

“Right. So. This has. Already. Gone. Massively downhill…” Aurelien said, the disappointment clear in his tone. “Firstly, my good woman, I am not from hell. And I got in by floating… obviously. All I can do is float. Although if you prefer me to appear more like you, I shall try my best.”
He concentrated on organizing his shadowstuffs to making him appear more like he had a head, arms, and legs. It was quite the waste of energy, but perhaps like this he would seem less threatening to her.
“There we are,” he said when he had finished. “I am a shade, madam. A creature made of shadows and dark magic. My shadowstuffs consist of negatively charged energy, moisture, and shadow essence. Before you go labeling all of that as something… from one of the many layers of hell… I will share with you that I was once a paladin, a servant of the Lord of Light, a sun deity. A priest of one of my lord’s enemies overpowered me and transformed me into what you see before you during a dark ritual. That was centuries ago. I may have been created by evil, but I am not evil. I am trapped as a shade forever, and currently, I am lost. Now, the former I can do nothing about, but the latter… that could be alleviated by your good help.”
He made no attempt to move closer to her, but rather stayed right where he was. “Now… a haven, you say? For what? Or whom? You see I truly have no idea where I am at the moment…”
No, she did not want it to appear like her, she wanted it gone. Immediately. Though despite her wishes the shadow shifted around anyway, morphing into some semblance of a human form. It was… increasingly unsettling. Her hands tightened on her bow that much more.
“What…?” Alexa did not have a good response to what she just witnessed. “Lord of Light? Sun deity?” What the hell was a shade? None of what he said made sense to her. There was no ‘Sun Deity’, there was the Hexatheon. The only thing she could think of that could possibly fit his description was Solheim, and that existed some two millennia. It was extinct now, nothing but old dungeons and dust remained of the ancient civilization. Then again what she knew about it was extremely limited. Still…
Lex glared at shade. “None of what you say makes any sense. This is Eos, and nothing of what you’ve told me exists here. How do I know this isn’t some trick? You could be a new breed of daemon for all I know.” It did not seem dangerous, but then again neither did a chickatrice till you got too close. “The thing you’re standing in?” She gestured around, pointing at the flat stone they were upon. Glowing blue symbols covered the rock, ruins used to ward away demons and create a safe space to rest at. “It’s supposed to keep the things that want to kill you outside. But apparently, it’s defective if you’re in here.” Even as she said the last bit she grew more doubtful of it being a daemon. That did not make it trustworthy of course, no matter how sad it’s past may have been.
“And nothing you just said makes sense to me either. I have never in my nearly fifteen hundred years of existence heard of a place called Eos.” Aurelien sighed in abject despondency. “It appears that I am even more lost than I thought. And… that… you are quite unwilling to help me. Well, thank you for your time, madam. I shall attempt to solve my predicament elsewhere, so as not to upset you further. I apologize for any discomfort or aggravation my presence has caused you. Good day.”
He let his shadowstuffs pulsate and radiate around him as they would now as he turned as floated away. As he did so, he grumbled to himself. “I don’t know why I bother, honestly. It is always the same. ‘Oh, Aurelien, you are so scary! Oh, you are so evil! Be gone foul creature of blah, blah, blah…’” He sighed again. “Blast and confound it all! By the gods, all I want is a map or a kind word, is that too much to ask? When I find out who caused me to slip through a time rift, I shall promptly and vigorously shock them in the backside!”

“Right. So. This has. Already. Gone. Massively downhill...” Aurelien said, the disappointment clear in his tone. “Firstly, my good woman, I am not from hell. And I got in by floating... obviously.
Before you go labeling all of that as something... from one of the many layers of hell... I will share with you that I was once a paladin, a servant of the Lord of Light, a sun deity. A priest of one of my lord’s enemies overpowered me and transformed me into what you see before you during a dark ritual. That was centuries ago. I may have been created by evil, but I am not evil. I am trapped as a shade forever, and currently, I am lost. Now, the former I can do nothing about, but the latter... that could be alleviated by your good help.”
He made no attempt to move closer to her, but rather stayed right where he was. “Now... a haven, you say? For what? Or whom? You see I truly have no idea where I am at the moment...”
Shades and Shadows

“Hmm… Let me see if he is at home. This won’t take but a minute or two. I shall return momentarily.” Aurelien flew toward the dark, shadowy corner of the room and into the shadow on the floor, disappearing into it. A few wispy trails of his shadowstuffs were left behind briefly, swirling around and dissipating until they were gone. He was gone all of three minutes before returning, rising up out of the very same shadow on the floor through which he had left. “We are in luck! He is at home. I could take you to his apartment right now, if you wish.”
“He is not happy about having this sprung on him, but you must understand, if we had chosen a date for next week he would have found some other reason to complain, so… do not take it personally or think too much about it. Also, I feel I should warn you… Sri’hen is… well he’s a typical bachelor. His son moved out into his own apartment recently and well… he has let his own place go a bit. It is not so bad as moldy cheese in the refrigerator or underwear hanging from the ceiling fan, but… it is perhaps not as tidy as I would like, were it I who was having the company over at a place of my own…”
“Right, so… to do this, since you are not a shadowwalker yourself, I shall have to take you there myself. If I may, I will wrap a tendril of shadowstuffs around say, your wrist. It will not hurt, mind you, it will only feel cool and moist and perhaps it will give you some goose pimples on your arm. I am sure you know from your own shadowlings. I shall draw you along with me and we shall pop in that shadow over there and pop back out in Sri’hen apartment. Hopefully he will have put on a shirt and shoes by then, as I suggested to him. Does that sound alright to you?”
“Shadow walk? You mean porting? Cause if so, then I can do that easily!” Making a shadow hole and porting all around him before settling down again. “Sorry but I love to do that!” Sri'hen sounded… like a typical guy in her mind. She knew thay not all guys were messy and were quite organized but from what she saw with Darius and his clothes everywhere, she hoped that it wasn’t the same thing. “I am ready when you are Aurelien. And worry not about Sri'hen and his home. I have male friends and have experienced some unclean rooms and such so I won’t be taken back from whatever sight greets me.”
“Porting…?” he asked, not familiar with that particular term. As he watched her bounce around for portal to portal, however, and seeing how new ones seemed to open up for her wherever she had a mind to go, he became very excited, indeed. “No, actually, I do not know what it is that you are doing. That is more than just jumping from portal to portal. You appear to actually be able to… create portals. Well, now, how interesting is this?! Sri’hen cannot do that… I can, being what I am, but I have never seen a mortal do it before. And it is called porting, you say? How lovey… Sri’hen will be jealous that a mere human can do something he cannot. I do not mean to put you down, by the way, I am only introducing you to his arrogance ahead of time so you can prepare. He thinks his race is far superior to humans, elves, and whatever else he might encounter. Do not worry, though, he never does anything with it beyond the occasional moment of blatant superiority complex trickling into his speech.
“Hmm… well, then you should be able to follow me without much of a hassle. Simply tell your shadows to do so and then… well, I assume you can follow them yourself? Right, so… I will create a portal that will take us directly there. We shall emerge… probably in the TV room of his apartment. Take care not to damage his flat screen TV. Although I am certain you cannot tell, I can assure you that I am rolling my eyes right now. Anyway… here we go!”
The shade flew to a shadowy area near a wall and opened up a much large portal than he usually did for himself. He wanted to make sure Jordan could see it, after all. He then passed into it, feeling the pull of the shadow realm. They were not going to stay this time, however. He could show that to her later. For now, he continued immediately on to Sri’hen apartment. As predicted, Aurelien emerged in the corner of Sri’hen’s TV room.
He peeked around first before entering the room, hoping Jordan would not be far behind. If she got lost, he could always go back and look for her.
“Sri’hen!” Aurelien called. “Turn the lights on, for the gods’ sake, you have company!”
“I prefer it dark,” said the Ulaeri male as he reclined on his couch. He seemed wholly unconcerned.
“There you are,” the shade said. “Darkness is rude.” He flew over to the light switch and pushed his shadowstuffs up into it, flicking it on. “Sit up, at least, so you can properly meet Jordan.”
As he sat up, Sri’hen long, straight black hair cascaded over his shoulders, reaching almost to his waist. His silver eyes glinted in the light. His ghost white skin was accentuated by the black t-shirt and dark blue jeans he wore. He reached for the remote and turned off his TV, running his fingers through his hair as he considered Jordan. “So you are a shadowwalker?”
“Or ‘hello.’ ‘Hello’ would be nice, considering this is your first meeting…” Aurelien interjected. “Your manners are abhorrent.”
Sri’hen merely grinned at his friend, the shade’s nervous nagging having amused him thoroughly.
Jordan had followed Aurelien and was now standing in Sri'hen’s living room. What she didn’t expect was for him to be so… handsome. Sri'hen looked young but she knew better than to let that thought sink in. His hair was as black as hers and no doubt longer with skin just as pale as her own. So many similarities already! Sapphire met silver as her shadows pooled around her and regarded him with great interest.
“Yes, I am. Though I prefer to be called ‘mutant’ but my name is Jordan. And no worries Aurelien, I have plenty of friends who are rude at first glance. He is no different although it seems to encompass his character completely.” Easily setting the mood. Shifting a leg and moving her hip, she sizes up Sri'hen in case he retorts her words.
Sri’hen watched Jordan for a moment… then the corner of his mouth curled upwards into a smirk… and then he was laughing. “I like her already,” he said to Aurelien. “Very well, mutant. I myself prefer to be called a shadowwalker. We shall respect each other’s chosen titles, hmm? Would you like something to drink? Water, tea, wine?” he offered. He ran his fingers through his long, straight, silky black hair as he rose from the couch.
Sri’hen was strong but not very bulky, standing at around six feet tall. The black color of his V-neck t-shirt lay in stark contrast to the pure white skin of his face, neck, and chest. He did not appear to have any facial hair – not even any stubble – and his skin was free of blemishes. An almost surreally crisp and clear white, he was, except for the blackness of his hair. His silver eyes continued to look Jordan over.
“Aurelien tells me that you have some interesting skills that I do not possess. I am always open to learning. I am curious about these… shadows of yours. I possess no such things. Unless you count Aurelien…”
“I am my own shade, thank you very much, not an extension of your rude self,” the shade said, following Sri’hen as he began to move into his tiny kitchen.
“And that is why I don’t count you among my own powers,” Sri’hen confirmed. He started to brew some tea for himself. “So, Jordan… How is it that a human has such abilities and I do not?”
“There are plenty of humans who are shadow adepts and you damn well know it,” Aurelien said dryly.
“Yes, but not with her abilities,” Sri’hen insisted.
“You make it sound as if you are somehow special,” Aurelien said.
“I am special,” Sr’hen said with a playful grin.
“Good gods,” Aurelien said. “If I had eyes, sir, I would be rolling them with extreme vigor at this moment.
Sri’hen chuckled as he set a teapot down on the stove. That done, he leaned against the counter, folding his arms. “Unless you wish me to tell you about myself first,” he said to Jordan. “Fair is fair in any exchange of information. Both parties should walk away satisfied in their quest for knowledge.”

Aurelien was both lonely and bored, once again, and that was an unfortunate combination. When in this sort of wandering mood, there were really only two things to do: explore or play a prank. Since he was much to sedate at the moment to muster the energy for a prank, Aurelien decided to go exploring. It was easy enough to do with his ability to move through walls, floors, and ceilings. Indeed, any shadowy corner might obscure him well enough, save for his glowing red eyes.
He chose a school. At least, he thought it was most likely a school, due to the sheer number of young people that congregated there, although back in his day schooling was nothing like this. Waiting until all the kiddies - kids, well… more like young adults it seemed - had left for the day and then moved underground and up through the floor of the building, ready to have a look around. The curious shade was amazed by what he saw. There was a library, and numerous classrooms, as well as laboratory equipment in some of the rooms - of course he was too honorable a chap to peer into any of the bathrooms, though - and he was having great fun floating around observing them all.
There was hardly anyone at all inside the school and that suited him just fine. His appearance was… less than conducive to making friends with most humans he met and he was in no mood to give anyone a fright. Keeping his shadowstuffs condensed int a tight cloud about the size of a person but with no bodily definition whatsoever, he flew through a wall and came out the other side a little too fast. He came face to face with a young human female.
“Oh!” he exclaimed, coming to a hard stop. His shadowstuffs pulsated both with embarrassment and nervousness. “My sincerest apologies, madam… I did not see you there,” Aurelien said immediately and without thinking, before realizing that he had been caught and was probably about to be treated to a loud scream right in his face. “Oh dear… Please do not be afraid. I mean you no harm…”
Veronica halted in her tracks as the dark figure appeared in front of her, with piercing red eyes that were quick to shoot a chill through her body. She had stayed after school to finish up a test and a couple of assignments, and had been heading out to return home. The teen stood there in numb shock for a moment; it almost seemed that she wasn’t going to budge anytime soon - that was, until she finally managed to muster the courage to speak, to whatever this strange, unsettling creature was. Surprisingly, she didn’t even utter a single scream in the process. To be fair though, in a way, she had seen worse.
❝ ..Damn, I really am going crazy. ❞
Well, that wasn’t a very terrified response, now was it? The sight of this…thing, no longer seemed to faze her as the initial shock wore off; yet, it seemed the girl was brushing Aurelien off as some odd hallucination. But, Veronica was both sober and clean; her mind was in no way disrupted by the effects of alcohol or drugs of any kind. She hadn’t had either since the Remington party, a few weeks ago. Veronica couldn’t pin this on anything except a deteriorating mental state, but..a part of her told her that it wasn’t the case. The girl shifted uncomfortably where she stood, hesitating before she glanced around and took a step back, her gaze returning to the unsettling form of the being in front of her. She wasn’t screaming, nor was she running. Peculiar.
❝ Scratch that, I’m probably sane. What are you, a ghost or something? I don’t know what the hell you’re doing floating around a school but this isn’t the best place for you to be hovering around. ❞
“You are quite sane, my good woman. I am as real as you are. I am not a ghost, however. Ghosts are the disembodied spirits of dead humans. I am a shade… the important difference being that I am not dead. At least… not in the traditional sense. Although I was once human.”
He was very surprised, indeed. Usually humans screamed when they saw him, especially women. “You are of stout character, madam. Thank you for not screaming in my face. I hate it when that happens.” His shadowstuffs calmed down a bit, swirling more slowly until he thought to do something to perhaps make himself a bit more presentable. After all, his shade condition was no excuse for rudeness or lack of good grooming. Concentrating for a moment, he organized his shadowstuffs to form the semblances of arms, legs, and a head… distorted and gangly though they might be. “Ah, there we are. A more traditional look is called for when addressing a lady,” Aurelien said.
“I was merely curious… and bored… and that is a bad combination. It makes be restless, you see, and so I decided to observe your wonderful establishment here. It is a very nice place, if I may say so. And yes, I am aware that I am trespassing. Why do you think I waited until everyone had left. Well… almost everyone. What is your excuse for remaining long after your classmates have vacated, hmm?”
