.JESSICA BELL.
Community1 by jessica bell- mixed media 2011
Jessica Bell
Vancouver, British Columbia based artist Jessica Bell has a series, entitled Housing Estate, in which she works in collage and incorporates textiles and paint on birch. I like how there’s a subtle reference to the house like shapes in the work. Using sequential collage imagery is something that I am interested in incorporating in my own work.
My chosen subject area relates to the bigger picture of my own expertise in the sense that I am able to take this concept down a number of different paths-and therefore mediums. I’m especially interested in developing my work through photography, college and image making, these being some of the techniques I have gained a greater understanding on so far and wish to continue developing with this new project.
Leo Rubinfien
Photography references
i feel that it’s important for me to look at the work of different photographers who have acknowledged the notion of capturing a sense of place, environment and experience. (Especially ones which are different from my own) During my recent ‘home sweet home’ project, I discovered the work of Leo Rubinfien whose work encompasses this idea and thus I feel it could be useful to draw on this in more depth.
The photographer highlights the importance of aiming to evoke, and I feel this is something of significance.
Systems and communication exhibition.
Contextual references
Systems and communication; Tate
‘The exhibition brings together a number of artists who explore ideas around organisational systems, communication and mass media. The term ‘systems art’ echoes the 1968 essay systems aesthetics’ by the critic Jack Burnham, who argues that we are now in transition from object-oriented art to a systems rented culture.’ Thus in this case, art does not reside in material entitles, but in relations between people and their environment. ‘Such works could examine the ways in which ideas and images are circulated within society.
I feel that this could open up new ideas in terms of the relationship between people and environments. not only could i gain an understanding of how this different between environments but also an outlook on the different ways this may be interpreted.
Contextual references
I have considered the different sources that will allow me to develop a further possibilities for this project
‘RSA INCLUSIVE CITIES BRIEF’; Inclusive design
‘Inclusive design goes well beyond simply satisfying the requirements of government legislation or regulations, it’s about understanding people- their needs, their concerns and what they really want. Whether you call it inclusive design , universal design, or design for all, inclusive design is all about socially sustainable design, which provides acknowledges diversity ad does not prelude anyone. Design of al scales can and should be inclusive- the bit environment before anything else is for people. recognising that people can be disabled by their environment through inaccessible services , by the barriers in society, including peoples’ attitudes (stereotyping, discrimination, prejudice) and by organisations can help us to think about how a place or space can be inclusive.’
I found this brief interesting in the sense that it draws attention to the importance of inclusive design, this being something that I could perhaps draw ideas from in terms of considering how specific decisions may not only benefit us as individuals but also as a community.
Electronic superhighway exhibition
Electronic superhighway (White Chapel)
‘An exhibition bringing together works to show the impact of computer and internet technologies from the mid 1960s to prevent day. The exhibition features multi media works, together with film photography and drawing.’ Looking at the impact of technology could perhaps play an important role in regards to taking into account the ways in which we increasingly interact by today.
