"The Renaissance took place in chaos", Shane Hollander & Ilya Rozanov [Hudson Williams & Connor Storrie], Heated Rivalry 1.02 Olympians, inspired by this post
Jun 2026
I tried to lighten the image, applied a paper texture, applied shadowing, included overlines, flattened it, hated it, lightened it again, hated it more, darkened it, adjusted the tones, bumped up the watercolour overlay, removed the background watercolour splash I had originally because it was too bright, toned it back, and made it more in line with the Renaissance feel I was going for

hate hate hate how sites are increasingly trying to make right click saving images impossible. facebook, instagram, reddit (app), pinterest*, etc... all make you jump through hoops just to save an image. can you guys not please. how ddo i make them stop. can we get one of those EU regulations or whatever that makes them all comply, or are we going to have to wait for global socialism for that. ugh

Download Right-Click Borescope for Firefox. List all images under your cursor, even ones hidden by other elements
oh look, the exact tool that would have saved me SO much time and energy trying to find images hidden in the source code 🙃
This is all well and good, but as someone who has also had all* their work stolen and uploaded to Pinterest without my consent, please don’t use this tool for nefarious purposes.
Most of the time, if you ASK the artists, they’ll give you a copy that you can use for your phone background etc.

I've been thinking about how Shane has his entire life under control. His career, his diet, his knowledge of the game, his captaincy, his public image—everything is carefully managed. He's the person everyone relies on, the one expected to have the answers and make the right decisions. Being with Ilya must be one of the few places in his life where he doesn't have to carry that responsibility. He can relax, let someone else take charge, and simply exist without having to be in control of every detail.
For Ilya, it's almost the exact opposite. He's living in a country that still isn't fully his own, speaking a language that isn't the one he grew up with, and separated from his family. Even if they were nearby, they're the authority figures in his life, not people he can direct or control. Then Shane comes along and willingly puts his trust in him, handing over the reins without hesitation. For perhaps the first time, Ilya has someone who looks at him and says, I trust you. You decide.
Of course they're a match. They're solving opposite problems. Shane finds relief in surrendering control, while Ilya finds confidence in being given it. They're opposite sides of the same coin, each giving the other exactly what they've been missing.

"I brought flowers, picked her up at five, we had dinner, went to the movies, then I brought her back home. It was really nothing spectacular. I had honestly no idea what I was doing." The memory felt so far away that it could have been somebody else's. A different life. Ilya looked at him with a giddy grin. "Did you have sex that night?" "What? No!" "Why not?" "God, Ilya! We were just two kids on our very first date! I didn't even kiss her on the mouth when I brought her back home! What kind of dates did you go on when you were seventeen?" "The kind that involved sex, obviously." Shane couldn't stop himself from groaning. "Obviously. What was I even thinking?"
Two years into their marriage, Shane discovers that Ilya has never been on a real first date. There is only one way to remedy the situation: Shane asks his husband out on a date where they pretend that they have just met.

A redraw of a redraw of a redraw, with an edit and an overhaul, plus an added "C" for the other two captains and not just Ilya. Please don't look too closely at their feet, I really messed up the skates in this version (then tried to steal those parts from the original, and then messed them up even more so went back to the less messy mess). There was almost a plan to "paint" the inside of each locker in the colour of the applicable pride flag, but it would have been way too busy.
"The Back of Pride Night", Shane Hollander, Ilya Rozanov, Scott Hunter [Hudson Williams, Connor Storrie, Francois Arnaud] from Heated Rivalry, the bonus rear cover from the [REDACTED] zine

I messed up a few things with this one, mostly because it was going to have a big title text over the top of it. Shane and Scott's hands on Ilya's back look horrible (again, they weren't actually meant to be visible), and while I'm tempted to go in and change it, I'm not going to because hey, guess what? People make mistakes too. The little rainbow bit was a colour swatch from another part of the image, and I messed up the layers when I was overlaying it. If you know how hard it is to differentiate between 700+ colour layers, you'll understand my plight right now.
(Also, the first time I did this, I spelled both "Rozanov" and "Hollander" wrong and had to argue with my own brain even after I fixed it because I'd stared at it for so long they'd ceased to be words)

Hear me out...
[Just kidding, I know you're taking a break, so I'm not actually going to say what my latest 'Hear me out' is actually about (unless you really wanna know) but I had start my ask the way I always do LOL]
I just wanted join in the chorus of love and support because you deserve it. And I need to express my gratitude for the kindness and creativity that I have had the privilege to enjoy since January. I have already spoken to you privately about this, but I think it bears repeating on a more public forum. And I love seeing the support you have been getting not just in response to the AI Witch Hunt but also just since you started posting your art.
Oh my god, seriously, you're gonna make me cry!
I'm genuinely shocked and surprised by how many people have reached out, both publicly and privately, in support. As someone who has never had much support in the past (and especially with how many people who chose sides in my recent personal life issues), you have no idea how much it means to me.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
(PS You will be one of the first to know when I come back from my break)

fanfic writers deserve better
if we post too fast, we get accused of using ai (no, you don't know how fast someone can write. you don't even know if the "too-frequent-to-be-human updates" you see are something that have long been finished and sitting in an author's drafts for god knows how long. just because it's recently posted, doesn't necessarily always mean it's recently written too. a lot of writers finish the whole thing first before they start posting it chapter by chapter).
if we take "too long to update", we get people pressuring us to "update faster" even though fanfics are our hobbies and we write for ourselves first and foremost.
if our works are grammatically correct, we get accused of using ai (some of us just love correct grammars).
if our works are not grammatically correct, we get insulted/criticized (mind you, not everybody writes in their native language. kudos to writers who write in their second, or third, or fourth language — I'm willing to bet a lot of people who criticize fanfics because of poor grammar can't even speak other languages besides english).
if our paragraphs are "too long and too detailed", we get accused of using ai.
if our paragraphs are "too short", we also get accused of using ai.
if we are autistic and we write in ways some deem "too robotic", we get accused of using ai.
some people just don't use their brains to think "ai was trained on human-made works, it was trained to look human-made. ai writes this way because the way it writes is the way real humans write — real humans whose works it was trained to mimic". instead they somehow disregard this logic and think "hmmm this work looks ai-generated. I will engage in witch hunt, be a bully and harass writers whose works I don't vibe with".
You're a book binder! That's so cool! Any advice for someone who is thinking about getting into it?
Yes! I have a lot of advice, first is to join the Renegade book binding discord server and ask them for help. Watch the DAS YouTube videos.
I took several days off work so I could figure it out. You don't need expensive supplies to get started, but expensive supplies get tempting after you make a few books, so watch out.
The hardest thing for me is all the terms. I am crafty so the skills are tricky but manageable but you can't research how to do something if you can't figure out what it's called....
Bookbinders are super nice and will love helping you. Don't suffer alone! Just ask!
This is basically how it feels to look at a book you've made by hand:
Or maybe this:
As the owner of several of @zenaidamacrouras1’s bound books (their stories AND MINE!!), I can attest on how amazing the work turns out 🤩
Art for the amazing @zenaidamacrouras1's Hollanov AU fic Untouchable Face. Thank you for being such a good friend and supporter, Z.
He stands at the water’s edge and scans the beach, which has a few people lying on the chairs provided by the hotel, a family under an umbrella with some kids digging in the sand, and, unmistakably, Ilya Rozanov wearing a black swimsuit and a gold Rolex, walking toward him.
So, Shane successfully negotiated Ilya out of any props for this photoshoot, and he stands by that, but now wardrobe has taken things to the other extreme: Ilya is currently sauntering from the makeup tent to a section of beach framed by aesthetic rocks on one side and a wall of light reflector umbrellas on the other, and he’s wearing only a watch.
Okay, he also has on very small, black, silky briefs.

Photoshop elements (where photoshop is used as the verb), overlays, overlines, textures... I had a lot of fun with these!
Y'all. I am the luckiest possum in this compost bin, I'll tell you that much.
If you’re the possum, I’m the racoon 😂 but we’re definitely in the compost bin 👌
Hello dear I just want to say you are lovely and your work and presence in fandom has brought me (and a million others) so much joy. Sorry you have felt the need to explain your process for making art, but it is actually really cool to see and learn about your process, so also, thanks for sharing about your process for how you make your art!
You are way too kind to me 😭

just wanted to say your art is gorgeous, and I'm sorry you're dealing with all that stupid shit!
Thank you very much 💜 I actually have some work being posted later today that I made as a gift for a friend for their fic, and it is people like that who make this fandom worth it
Heyo! I just saw your post about getting AI witch-hunted and I wanted to say I'm so so so sorry. Your art is beautiful and oozes passion, it is so painfully apparent that you hold a deep veneration and love for creation. It is not correct or fair that your art is being accused of AI use, and it is especially egregious that people have stolen it to put through AI detectors. I'm so deeply sorry and no one should blame you for any break or exodus you take from any platform.
It has become a struggle to get excited about posting any of my artwork, knowing that someone is going to try to force me to prove its validity. That’s why I’m taking a break.
I do this because it’s fun, because I enjoy it, because seeing other people react in positive ways and sharing in my enjoyment and enthusiasm is part of what makes it fun. And when I find myself bracing against what comments I’m going to get, and I’m hesitant to post because I don’t have the bandwidth to argue for myself, it’s taking the fun out of it.
Thank you very much for your kind words 💜 you’ve helped brighten my day.
