Week 15

1. What is the purpose of submitting a video in a writing class?

Well, according to the Student Guide…

And according to a PowerPoint slide…

For me, it’s a rhetoric and writing course, not just a writing course. The rhetoric component is important because it makes us mindful of the sorts of decisions that go into play when creating something that will be communicated, regardless of the genre.

We’ve practiced typographic examples in class and iconographic examples on Tumblr. The video assignment was used to expand the rhetorical scope of our decisions.

2. Explain how you composed your message (purpose) in multiple forms.

Well, we based most of our decision from the outline and determining what would be the most effective method to carry out a portion of the plot. For example, if a statistic required a chart to explain the growth rate of certain jobs instead of just plain text, then that would be used as part of the video’s logos. However, if an interview adds a personal touch to the need for funding better than statistics may, then that would be used for subliminal pathos.

3. Did the structure and delivery of the film doc worked to achieve its advocacy? Yes/No. Explain.

I think there are certain aspects of the video that helped to achieve its advocacy. In terms of structure, our outline was centered around the different details that made the lack of funding an issue, thus building the need to fund high schools for STEM programs. In terms of delivery, there were minor editing errors that could have been corrected for the interviews included.

4. Select one of the questions listed and explain the rhetorical choices you made towards answering the question. For the first question, I included screenshots from the Student Guide and a PowerPoint slide for the Film Documentary because the question has been answered previously. However, I used their explanations to formulate my own, followed by a gif featuring an abyss, reflecting on the fact that most of us are extremely foreign to film making.

Week 15

The purpose of submitting a video in writing class is to learn a different way to use rhetoric in our daily lives. In this case the film documentary contain all type of genres / rhetorical appeals.  

I believe that the structure that we chose for film was good. We incorporated videos, picture, and text that presented the information corresponding to our topic. For logos we decided to present different sources of statistics. For our ethos we gathered information from different reliable resources including the interview. Finally pathos was presented on how we tried to represent some of the inside out character to demonstrate the different emotions that some of the bipolar disorder encounter with.  

I do believe that the structure and advocacy achieved their purpose in our presentation on how we showed what bipolar disorder was and the problem that it had in the workplace. Finally we had to choose a solution to the circumstances both the employees and employers can encounter with.

The three points that I will be covering in my argument for my op-ed will be based on the education system, language barrier, and parent involvement found in the border region.

The way that I will be making reference to the point of “language barrier” is by presenting some of the problems students encounter with and touching basis on scandals that refer to ESL student’s academic scores. I will be also explain some of the struggles they go through while learning.

Op-ed

My topic throughout the semester was related to International Trade policies and how these policies affect the countries, therefore I think that the genre that best suits my op-ed is a column in magazine.

A column is the best format for my opinion piece because of the nature of my subject, also in a column I can express my opinion as well as to suggest policy changes to improve the way in how trades are done in between countries as to reduce the economic gaps created because unfair treaties.

I am going to use this image in the column to make an emphasis in how the leaders of the countries sign the treaties only looking after their interests and not at those of the rest of the population.

Week 14

For my op-ed I will be presenting my information as an article or a flyer to present information about the education system in the simplest format. It is still in debate.

The reason that I will be choosing either type of genres will be for the reason that both are appropriate when trying to engage the community. Both will be simple to understand when the information is present to the community.

My stance is  to change or find a solution for this issue is on how i will try to inform parents to interact more in their child education. I will be providing them with basic information about some of the problems the students go through and barriers they encounter when wanting to succeed.

Week 12: Film Doc.

While conducting our outline our group decided that we will be featuring ethos, logos, and pathos in the film documentary. What I found most sufficient to help us was ethos. With ethos our group will be able to demonstrate what coronary heart disease while educating college students about the dangers.

The reason why we chose to focus on ethos was because we found numerous reliable sources that talk about coronary heart disease from health experts, pH students, and doctors. A few of the articles found were about how daily exercise can help, as well as what coronary heart disease is and the causes of this tragedy.

By using ethos, I can see other groups benefiting from this because it will provide validation of what they are trying to persuade their audiences to believe. Without the validation from reliable resources audiences may not be able to  believe what other groups are trying to convey in their film documentary.

Week 12

The rhetorical choices that my group and I are planning to use in our film documentary is ethos and logos. We will be using ethos on how we will gather information from several resources to avoid being bias or present any type of awareness. We will be using logos on how we will present logic information such as statistics, definitions, and solutions.

The topic that my group and I will be present is on how some people who have a bipolar disorder struggle in a working environment. As well present what are resources that could help this the support of special cases like this.

The resources that I think that could help us succeed with the film documentary is having a variety of reliable resources. As a group we are planning to interview an expert psychologist, a business boss, or even a person who has a bipolar disorder.

Week 10

1. What patterns did you find in the development, or enhancement, of your research skills? 

Before this assignment I had never in my life written a literature review, and I have to admit, that for me, it was a huge challenge! Before this assignment I did not care about the variety of resources. I used to believed that only using scholarly articles for my papers was the best way to support my ideas. However now I know that is the complete opposite of the truth! 

By only having one form of resources I eliminated my credibility instead of enhancing it. Another thing that improved my research skills was, to make sure that the sources were credible. Whenever I write a paper I make sure my sources have some form of credibility however the literature review showed me how a strong source can easily support the purpose of my paper, whereas a weak source only makes things more problematic. This assignment took me out of my comfort zone and in return helped me improve my research skills

  2.  Did your assessment/evaluation of the sources change? If so, how?

Yes! Completely! When I first started I had picked my questions and my sources but the more I worked on the paper the more I changed my mind. As I was writing I realized some sources where not good enough or some sources would be better at answering a different question. Once I was able to find the perfect sources for my questions, everything fell into place.  

3.  Do you think the methodology described in questions 1 and 2 work? Yes/No. Explain.

Yes, the best way to have an unbiased paper is to really focus on the sources. No matter how great of a writer someone might be, if they do not support their claims no one will listen. For that reason it is important to have a method that involves good research skills and strong sources. Once those factors are perfected everything else will make sense.

For my second question I used pathos. When I answered the question I did not want to be informative, I just wanted to speak freely based on my experience. I also included a gif that expressed how I felt once I understood everything.

Week 10: Literature Review

The patterns that I found while developing my literature review was that it more like sequence of events. I had to provide an overview before going into details. This was the first time I had ever done a literature review paper and I found it quite challenging. It was challenging not to be bias and really hard not to be argumentative about the topic. I was just overwhelmed.

My sources did change drastically because I had several scholarly articles which was not a good choice from my part. Then the other resources that I had at the beginning did provided an overview of the topics but they all sounded pretty much similar. Once started writing I notice that this references also did not provided the accurate information that I was really looking for and need to continue conducting this research. I immediately restarted the hunt for more accurate resources which I believe it help.

I do believe that the methodology does provide a description of question 1 and 2. For the reason that it provided information for every question presented. It also provided a guideline to follow during the process of writing. Finally it help me break down all the information and resources that I had for this paper.

The rhetorical choices that I chose for question 2 is ethos because I am being honest in how it was challenging getting the appropriate resources for this literature review paper.  I had to try and get the right and adequate sources to provide good ethics that could transfer to the paper.  For this question I used a GIF that described my reaction while going over the resources that I gather at first.

Week 7: Source Research

When looking for resources its always important to decide if your resources are going to be reliable. Before picking a source its good to check if there are any educational credentials, if the source was published in a scholarly journal, or if they even did research in a University/Institute.

The process of finding resources is to determine which type of genre research you want your information to come from. For example, if you wanted a video resource a good database would be Ted Talks, or if you wanted an online article a good website would be The Washington Post. If your even looking for a resourceful book the University Library will help as well as the University Library online database.

Once having found your resources its always good to review them to make sure they are not bias, argumentative, opinionated, and unreliable. Make sure to see if there is a reference list at the bottom of the article to show proof of being valid. Depending on the type of topic you have it will decide what type of databases you will use, because the resources you pick may not have any beneficial information to help you causing it be more difficult to conduct your research.

Week 7

The process in searching through multiple platforms/database is challenging for the reason that they’re certain steps to complete. I first started by reviewing my questions. Then I went through the google search to have a general understanding of what to expect. Then used the library databases to narrow down the material.

In obtaining different type of sources it helped me break down the information to obtain the material needed. At first I was concern that I was going to struggle in the research, but it was a matter of time to break it down to what was necessary. The main focus was on the material presented, then the source, the credibility, finally the date when the article was published.

The Multiple perspective for the Literature Review is worrying and frustrating, for the reason that there is a lot to cover and a lot of standard to meet.  The main concentration of this paper is being able to present a credible research with the appropriate information and in a formal/organized way.

Week 6: Rhetorical Choice

The topic I have choose for my research is Cardiovascular Disease. Heart Disease is the main cause of death in the world. So it is important for people to understand what it is and how it can be prevented.

I will explain how diet and medication can help in coronary heart disease. Then I will explain the differences in surgical treatments and finally long terms effects on coronary heart disease.

 So over all the rhetorical choose that I will be using is logos.  By using statistic, studies and comparisons. It would give an idea to the audience on how to prevent, treatments and long term effects.

Week 6

The topic that i chose is Elementary ESL Students because it is related to my major, Elementary Bilingual Education.

The reason that i chose this topic is to inform the readers some of the struggles ESL students go through while they are in the process of learning. people often have a misconception that ESL students are dumb and don’t have any future.

in reality ESL students are really smart the thing that is affecting them is the language barrier.  i believe that a student should never think that he or she is dumb.  Everyone is unique in their own way and have the chance to reach the stars. 

my goal is to provide the information to the best of my ability. as of right now i need to improve the structure of the research questions  in order for them to flow properly.

Week 5: Genres

1.What did you know about genres before this assignment and what impact do you think studying genres may have on your writing? 

I had only associated genres with different types of writing or movies like romantic, horror, comedy, etc. I think studying genres impacts your writing greatly because it helps really dig into a specific genre which makes you think beyond the face of it.

2. What are the complexities of using genres? 

The complexities of using genres is finding a genre that relates to your topic and can be analyzed. Any genre can be analyzed but finding one to be very specific with and can be addressed to the audience of your topic was the hard part.

3.What is the value of studying and/or writing about genres?

The value of writing about genres makes it easier to break down the genre and truly understand its message so it can be easier to understand. It helps us open our mind to a new way of thinking and see what others don’t usually analyze at a first glance.

I choose to answer the first question and use a gif. Since it was constantly being said that we need to be more and more specific, I immediately thought of this gif. I just kept thinking that I need to be keep digging into the genres to be as specific as possible. Once, I started getting into it I realized it wasn’t that hard at all. Gifs are also fun to interact with.

Week 5

1. At first i did know about a type of  genres. genres that you would find when looking for a movie of a book. Little did i know this was not the type pf genres found in a RWS course. when i completed this assignment i notice that the genres that i knew where not the most appropriate ones for the course. the impact that i notice while studying genres is that i learn and was able to understand the appropriate genres used when writing.

2. the complexities of using genres is now “ piece of cake,” for the reason it is now easier to determine the type of genres and classify them as typographic iconography and oral  genre

3. The values of studying and writing with genres is that it allows you to separate the type of classification presented when writing making it easier to write a paper.

for question #1 the reason that i choose a GIF is because it allows the viewer to make a connection with the gesture. for example in the GIF in question 1 it show a lady  preforming an appalled gesture toward something. this corresponds on how i first reacted to the general analysis assignment and how i had to choose two type of genres.

WEEK 2: Genre Analysis

Genre chosen- Video from Doctors without Borders youtube channel. The audience intended to be targeted here are both people who may not be familiar with the organization as well as people who do know what they do and want to see what it is like to work for the organization.

Purpose- To inform viewers of the conditions people around the world are in due to lack of medical care. 

Logos- The audience can see that other parts of the world are in bad shape due to the lack of medical facilities as well as other thing people in poverty lack such as clean water and nourishing food.

Ethos- For an audience of people that are up-to-date with the organization as well as those who have worked for Doctors without Borders may be able to relate to what the video content shows.

Pathos- This video may trigger an emotional response from the audience by showing what bad conditions other people live in.

Genre Analysis

I chose Iconographic as one of my genres.

Purpose: The Purpose of this visual is to demonstrate that not all students learn the same way as their peers. Each individual student have their own way of learning and understanding the subject.

 Audience: The primary audience is toward  some of  the community and the government who have a special way of thinking that all students have to be treat the same way.  

Rhetorical Aspects: 

        Ethos:  In this visual  it demonstrates a type of policy where they try to equally treat the students the same as if they are a form of robots. This picture I found it in memecenter.com. 

        Pathos: This image makes you think in what type of society we live in that instead of helping one another we try to destroy each other.It is sad and  to see this among our society.

       Logic: Throughout our life we have all encounter a type of struggle while being in school. Being in the border one of the biggest encounters that the student confront is the language barrier. This means that these ESL students are smart but have a different way to demonstrate it. 

At the end these ESL students think their not smart enough because of the language barrier and often seem to be lost.
