"Uh, thinkin' out loud. I must have a quarter million on me right now."
Se Tu M'Ami
aaron-hilridge
A week they spent in each other’s arms, tearing out softly spoken apologies, some not spoken at all, yet they still understood. They’d made a true mess of things, hadn’t they? Effy could hardly say she was surprised. She allowed it to happen, she allowed herself to once again allow it all to build up to the point of no return. She’d dragged him right down with her, and he went willingly. Effy Stonem was strong, she was a woman with a dark past who’d fallen for just the right type of wrong. He didn’t make her feel mental but he drove her mad with anger. Aaron Hilridge, sitting beside her with his bright blue eyes reflecting her own, he was the one she loved, the one she craved. His lips like a drug and his eyes like venom, Effy found that the longer she was with him, the more she needed him. It had never been like this before, not with anyone, not even Freddie. She never thought of things as ‘forever’ and yet she could picture an eternity where she was right then and there.
And yet they still couldn’t make sense of it. How could they so easily jump back from where they were? How could Effy so easily forget the sting of his hand across her face? It was a glorious pain, the kind she’d always craved in her life. Pain she’d once begged for, on her knees in the forest, strung out and desperate.. But she was older now, she didn’t have to beg. His hands reminded her she was alive, she was there, present and breathing, a constant mess of insanity and clarity. They’ve done nothing for a week but be one together, and yet Effy still felt a million miles away. She kept her face stone cold as usual, denying herself the indulgence of closure. The two had not spoken a word of the incident since it had happened. They’d simply woken up the next morning, a stiff and sore pile of limbs and mess. They’d poured their hearts into their hands and now they had nothing to say, nothing to resolve the pain they’d caused. Effy looks at him for a long moment, her eyes mentally tracing the spot along his nose that her fist had only a week ago damaged. There was no physical evidence, but Effy would never forget it. She’d never forget the feeling of the contact of flesh and the spark of life it had given her.
No words left her mouth for a long while as she reaches her hand out to tangle her fingers into his own. She knew on some level that in order to resolve all that had happened they would need to talk, to get it out there and get over with, but the words never came to her lips.
"We’ll be okay."
It came as no surprise, the inevitable outburst that could’ve ruined the couple that now sat with their fingers laced together, but it didn’t, and the question now was how they were going to get past what they were avoiding. They had managed to go without talking about the entire incident for a week, but they filled that space with time together. They made love, made breakfast, ate extravagant dinners, watched movies, and did anything that their hearts desired in the moment. Aaron couldn’t even remember a time when he had called into work so consistently during a one week period. Still, their time spent together in the last week didn’t diminish the giant elephant in the room, the unavoidable discussion about their biggest fight yet, and without a doubt, the most intimate.
Aaron couldn't help letting the fresh memory of their raw encounter to coarse through his mind as he returns the stoic gaze back at Effy. He could still hear the crack of the silence as his hand met with her soft cheek, and his nose pulsed with the pain of her punch, but did it matter now? The words she spoke were simple, yet they still held plenty of meaning behind them. A week had gone by and nothing was said about the entire incident. Was it healthy? No, but they were doing fine now, weren't they? They had spent the last week marveling in each other's company, and Aaron had never called into work so many times in one short week, but it was worth it, and that had to mean something, didn't it? He knew, and he supposed they both knew, that they would eventually talk it all out. Whether it was this moment current moment or not, he didn't know.
His eyes stay fixed on her as they flash between her lips and those memorizing blue eyes. The silence keeps the moment frozen, her hand with his. Still, he knows he will have to give a response, one with meaning and reassurance, love and enough room for him to back his words up.
"I could lose all my money, this house, our cars... everything, and I'd still be okay as long as I have you, darlin'. We have all the time, don't we? We can even afford to spend another week away from the office," he winks, squeezing her hand in his and stroking her fingers gently with his thumb while his words flow from his mouth.
