I just wanna say working at a non-profit has been the best job I’ve ever had. Mind you, I live in Canada.

I’m a dietary aide that serves food to the elderly. I also prepare some snacks and do dishes. 

I get paid $19.90/h. 

All I needed was Food Safe, WHMIS, and my criminal record check, which was all covered by my employer. I get 5 shifts a week and DOUBLE OVERTIME. That’s right-- almost $40/h if I work on my days off. I also get full time benefits despite working 20 hours a week, and have a union.

So if corporate America can’t afford to pay their employees fair salaries, but my non-profit employer can BECAUSE THERE’S NO CEO, there is a huge fucking problem with the way employers value their workers. There is no reason. NO. REASON. You should be getting paid $10.50/h for a place like Starbucks, a multinational, multi-million dollar company.

We can afford to buy nutritious food for our elders, pay fair wages to the entire kitchen staff (and the other staff including nurses, management, care aides and dietitians), and still have leftover money to maintain the gardens and building maintenance. This is a small business with no CEO, yet we can give all our employees meaningful and fair salaries.

Wake. The. Fuck. Up. Corporate America. It’s possible.
