I watch hellers confidently proclaim against something that was literally nailed by the narrative repeatedly. Like its the most obvious thing spelled in clear words. Spoken in clear sentence, written and directed in scenes. Sam is dean's default. He wouldn't choose his mom over sam. Why would you think cas even hold a ranking in his book? How do they proclaim it with such confidence.
Dean loves sam selfishly. He sees sam as his own. His own to care for, protect and his own to do what he think is right for sam. He likes cas as a friend but he will happily take him on the battlefield. He would protect cas, but he won't go over the board to keep cas with him. Its proven everytime cas dies. He doesn't do anything. He likes cas, but he isn't selfish about him. He doesn't consider him as his. He sees him as an individual. Dean literally goes above and beyond to keep sam on bench, if he can. If it depends all on him. He would go on the battlefield die but won't let sam even see what war is like, a sacrifice he won't do for cas. He require cas to fight. He would ask cas to save sam, even at his own expense, while reverse is never an option. He will give up his everything so sam can live a normal life without pain but when situation arises where he has to give sam up. He would rather join him in death then live with cas in this world. That makes cas one of many for dean and sam as the only one.
They stick with this one narrative because the writers had Dean say "we'll kill each other, just bring cas back." In 15x19 I believe it was? But you're right. Cas doesn't even hold a ranking in his book because Sam is Dean's everything. He'd let the world burn, before he let Sam go. There's no sacrifice he'd do for cas. None. There was nothing ever shown onscreen where he'd go that route, so what makes them think it's obvious??
