In order to offer entertainment to the patients at the asylum, the planners of Norwich State Hospital built this elaborate theatre, with a stage for performances and, later, movies. There was an organ to accompany silent films, and a full projection booth - from which this photograph was taken. On the floor below was a rollerskating rink. Sadly, a few years back, this building was demolished - along with the power plant and two of the most historic buildings on the campus - for little apparent reason. Currently, nothing has been done with the space that millions of dollars were spent clearing these buildings off of.

It is truly a strange thing when a steam pipe bursts under an abandoned building in the dead of winter, but that’s exactly what happened under the Clinic Building at Greystone Park State Hospital in 2007, a month before the building was unceremoniously knocked down. The steam congregated near the ceiling of the abandoned asylum infirmary, condensing on the pipes and dripping down in regular patterns - and creating these ice stalagmites. An hour after taking this photograph, demolition workers came into the building and chased us through the tunnels; we had to hide in an attic in 0 degree weather for hours while cops searched for us. The next time I drove out there, there was no trace that a building had ever stood in this spot.

Oradour-Sur-Glane: This town was abandoned because the Nazis rounded all the citizens up and killed them. France left the entire town untouched as a memorial. The people were buried, but the items; cars, bikes, baby carriages, still remain.

Walking up the stairs and into the main entrance of the Roundhouse was easier this time than it was the last. The steps were a bit slippery from the heavy rains when we had visited last week. After having a few days in a row with nothing but sunshine, things had thankfully dried up, allowing us to easily explore without our shoes being caked in mud.
