Critic Report
At first we decided to take on this expo as a team, that didnât last long though as soon as we got there we were asked to enter one by one and split into two teams. The Discomfort Zoneâs overall theme was immaterial labour and they decided to explore this theme by creating awkward and uncomfortable situations for the participants. The atmosphere of the expo was excarly that, awkward and uncomfortable with a few laughs every so often. Although some areas had a more intense awkwardness about it and some were a little more light hearted and jovial. Apart from making us feel uncomfortable, I felt like general offering of the expo was to make us think and see things from a different perspective than we usually do. For example, I chose to be in the red team but was forced to be apart of the blue team and then I had to come up with an argument for them. Although it did not change my mind in the debate, it did open my mind and made me realise why other people may believe in that cause. Another example of this was when we had to order food without speaking. Usually such a simple task was made much more difficult and uncomfortable. This made me think of people who may not be able to use their voice for whatever reason and how they would have to face this task daily. There was a large variety of offerings in this expo that were all on different levels awkward and uncomfortable but also had the ability to think and perceive ideas in a new light.
Participant report
There were two clear collaborations that most of the offerings shared. One being the link between happiness and imagination with youthfulness, and how with a little encouragement it is still deeply embedded in everyone. The other was the relentless bullying of the alien in each group which was confusing and didnât really make sense.

Into the Uncomfortable Zone
A review.
Right from the get go, we were tasked to pick a side: On whether land should be returned to the iwi in question, or if the land should be used for emergency housing; red or blue.
Up on the 2nd floor, it was immediately uncomfortable. Most, including myself, have not even heard of the issue, let alone have had the chance to think about it, but were forced into two opposing debate camps, coming up with statements on the spot to respond against what the previous person has said. The two moderators were dressed like (erratic) judges, frequently speaking in loud tones and driving the debate forward in a hurried pace. This setting had the effect of almost being absurd, where people were making statements on an issue they donât even feel strongly about. In our run, a non-student closed the debate with firstly, an authoritative (as MÄori) yet calm tone, and secondly, with having the accolade of being perhaps the only person in the room who has had followed the issue. He asks: why not have rich people give up their large Golf courses for homelessness? While homelessness is a serious issue, the key issue here is that iwis are and have not been consulted about their rightful land, and that it should be up to the iwi to give up that land, not the government. Homelessness vs iwi rights is a false dichotomy, and a straw man argument enabled by our mainstream media. Talking points in the media are frequently presented between two extremes, which is great for viewership but causes division between people, and miss the real problems.Â
We were then led into a dark room with skewers of fruits presented nicely on tables that people proceeded to eat. Later, a video shows that the fruits were stolen, and asks the audience: were you invited to take them? Implied: Did  you question how it was made? Much of what we consume daily are potentially full of bad ethical choices, perhaps polluting a natural source halfway around the world, or being the cause of misery for an exploited worker. And we are clueless partakers, often because of greed.
A tent awaits us in the other room, with participants crawling through to reach the other side. The meaningless of it, especially with the large spaces beside allowing people to go around it first seemed like a flaw or lack of planning, but on second thought, perhaps speaks to the arbitrary nature of rules and conventions in modern society, as the exhibition seeks to further show.Â
Sweets that I stole knowingly. No, I was not invited to take them. Yes, they were delish.Â
We were then seated at a wedding ceremony between two random participants. Titled Married at First Sight, it was a clear dig at the phrase Love at First Sight, which is what our society, and in particular, Hollywood, frequently sells to the masses. The connotation of such a notion, this seems to say, is that it is divorced from reality.Â
Cullumâs help me face
At a certain point, we willingly queued to go into a room where we were very hurriedly told to write solutions for problems in the world such as âSave world hungerâ, and then almost immediately fired. It speaks to the trivialisation of using mere ideas and innovations to solve the worldâs problems, without addressing the underlying issues that led to it in the first place.
At one of the exhibitions, a lone elderly man sits in a corner using his computer. He does not move nor flinch. Is he a product of our capitalist society? Is he aware of the vast emptiness that surrounds him, or the table just behind him to rest his laptop? Mass media consumption makes us oblivious to the present moment, life happening all around us, if only we just opened our eyes. Or as Bob Dylan puts it, he whoâs not busy beinâ born is busy dyinâ.Â
At another station, a box with headphones are put over our heads, obscuring sight and focusing our attention on the auditory sounds being played. We were asked to draw a representation of what we heard. It was quite a respite amidst the surrounding chaos, and implied how perhaps cutting down on the overload of attention in todayâs world can be a solution to increasing stress and burnout.Â
At the next station, we had to communicate which sweets we wanted on the menu with only our actions. A game of charades that, through how absurd the participants must have looked while performing, perhaps also hinted at the charade that is the transactions we partake in to obtain junk that is temporarily amusing, but in actuality bad for you.Â
Do we (I) know which buckets resemble the type of waste simply based on the colour of it? Nope.Â
Finally, a station requires participants to serve as common appliances such as a clock or paperclip, while the boss walks around flinging insults at them for doing a poor job.Â
Overall, apart from some way-finding issues, such as after the wedding station, where participants were sometimes called to leave their group to go to the next one, or the divergence of paths (which may be in itself a message, but such message has to be communicated clearer), the Uncomfortable Zone left an indelible impression.Â
The stations frequently bordered on the ridiculous, and with it, underscored the sometimes incredulous nature of our society, calling into question practices and beliefs that we have, from a young age, subscribed to. It was uncomfortable, but such discomfort is mainly with confronting the truth of our present conditions, being a reflection upon our reality.Â

Immaterial labour -Â
The expo addressed the theme of immaterial labour through making the participants feel uncomfortable. A pretty fun way to approach designing an expo because its not really hard to make a couple hundred students feel uncomfortable (it could almost be a game) the hard part is bringing the idea back and relating it to immaterial labour. Off the Bat i was uncomfortable at the entry i was made to pick a side in the current Ihumatao Debate - no brainer i chose to side with Maori and that the land should remain the original owners BUT the ticket lady told me to take a blue sticker - i was disgusted, was it a joke? was it a test? i said no but i really had no choice . so i uncomfortably took a seat with my blue team and slowly watch more defeated people join me in my blue team. we then got taken into a hot debate about the issue and four speakers had too volunteer from each side - which was uncomfortable because nobody wanted to support land theft?!?! Our large group uncomfortably filtered through the rest of the expo and awkward dispersed and scattered after the marriage ceremonies. once we dispersed into the open space the rest of the offerings were a bit more light hearted and easier to grasp the idea of the immaterial labour we were participating in.
Most awkward debate, i had to sink towards the back, couldnât debate for my blue team sorry
is marriage uncomfortable in the 21st century? technology has taken away emotion and feelings. does anybody even know anyone anymore? what has happened to society?
oh its a tv show.
had to perform office tasks while getting yeld at- the guy yelling was probably more uncomfortable then all of us to be fair.
fun another dimension bending game where the user has to draw what the other dimension looks like.

Critic at the Discomfort Zone
The Discomfort Zone was true to its name, right off the bat we were put into a debate about a very controversial topic, and forced to create an argument on the spot. We then awkwardly filed into the next room, already nervous from the first offering to be pleasantly surprised by a spread of fresh fruit kebabs. We helped ourselves not knowing what we were getting ourselves into. As we snacked a video played of someone shopping for the ingredients for these delicious kebabs, when suddenly he took off out of the shop, stealing all the produce he had collected in his bag. The end scene simply asked, "Were you offered those [kebabs] or did you just take them?" which left an array of reactions from horrified glances to nervous laughter. These first two offerings were important because they prepared you for what was to come, from impossible job interviews to marrying a total stranger we were thrown into the deep with this expo. The system of exchange seemed to be offering uncomfortable experiences which had the participants much more engaged with the expo as a whole. All of the offerings addressed the theme well with creative offerings that differed from the last, though some were perhaps too discomforting. The debate one was a clever offering and a good way to get people engaging, however, I felt as though the IhumÄtao land battle topic was too intense when the nature of a debate is already very tense. It could have been just as effective if the discussion was a little more humorous, or something that relates closer to uni students rather than the serious political topic. I felt I didn't know enough about the issue and was I worried about unintentionally offending someone, though I had unquestionably stepped into the Discomfort Zone.

Expo of immaterial labours - what i learnt from this expo was idea that fun isnât produced with money or flashy overproduced events, its more natural and can be found in more organic processes like painting or engagment and interacting with friends. Most of the teams had related there offering back to being young because youth is mostly associated with having fun and playfulness and then there was a confusing idea of bullying aliens added to the expo - Unlucky Ken
