Halsman believed asking his models (usually well known celebrities) to jump, would remove their rigidness in front of the camera.
In the act of jumping you are thinking more about your take off and landing, hence showing a more candid and natural facial expression. People also jump in very different ways, which on closer inspection can unearth the personality/ mood of the model.
