We read lots of good disturbing shit in hs or in the writing groups I joined in hs but somehow the top of the heap for shit that haunted me’s still indisputably Ethan Canin’s “The Palace Thief”. It’s not horror as such but it freaked me the fuck out. 

There was another O. Henry short story we read that was also really alarming but I had to google a major spoiler (which is also a warning) to recall the name – “The Furnished Room”.

Reasons for euthanasia:

Being so senile that you don’t recognize your family most or all of the time Being so disabled that you can’t express yourself or take care of yourself Being brain dead, being a vegetable If you’re put in hospice If you choose to be euthanized

I remember when being trans meant if you wanted to live as yourself, you had to up and leave your home and move to somewhere no one knew you. You had to cut ties with your family and every one you knew. Then you had to hope that no one in the new town you moved to figured it out or you would be onto the next one. That's why the bar for "passing" was so important. It was the difference between eating. It was the difference between being homeless. It was the difference between being accepted, not being abused, not ending up in an asylum, not ending up dead.
