Ronnette looked down at her planner.
Ask around the Fontaine Forensic and Medical Hall
Meet Charlotte
Meet Lady Furina and Neuvillette
"Alright then," she thought to herself. "Let's do this."
She took a careful step inside the Fontaine Forensic and Medical Hall and was immediately ushered into a busy, typical hospital atmosphere - buzzing with anxious urgency. As far as she knew, this branch had been established by the Fontaine Research Institute for medical treatment and forensic research. Of course the Forensic Department worked closely with the Palais Mermonia to assist them in cases.
She could see the scholarly reverence of the Research Institute reflect off of the building's ambience. Nurses and doctors moved past the walls lined with discoveries by various pioneers of medicine. People sat tensely in the waiting room and she could see researchers conversing with the clinicians.
As Ronnette approached the receptionist, somebody else beat her to it, brushing roughly past her without so much as an acknowledgement. But when she tried to confront them, her heart dropped to her stomach.
Gabriel Chavonne.
Ronnette froze. "What is he doing here?" she thought.
She quietly scuttled away to a safer distance - within the earshot. Ronnette knew that eavesdropping on him would have no productive outcome butโฆshe couldn't help herself.
Gabriel banged his right hand on the desk, making the receptionist jump. "I had an appointment," he said coolly.
The receptionist nervously adjusted her glasses. "Um, sorry, what was it forโ"
"I had asked for Dr. Elliot twenty minutes ago. House appointment."
"I apologize sir but he hasn't checked in yetโฆ"
Gabriel's face twisted with anger. "Are you serious?! We had an agreement!"
"T-Then it is likely a private matter between you and Dr. Elliot. I cannot help you with thatโ"
"This is outrageous!" Gabriel snapped. "Do something about this now!" He practically waved his left hand right at the receptionist's face.
"Burnsโฆ" Ronnette noticed. His left hand was marked with grisly blemishes. "The wound doesn't look very fresh thoughโฆ"
"Can I help you, miss?"
Now it was Ronnette's turn to jump. She turned around to face a pleasant looking nurse peering curiously at her.
"Now should be a good time for me to ask about Maeve."
"Yes, actually," Ronnette said smoothly, fiddling with the brooch on her shirt. "You see I am just a budding journalist writing an article and I want to ask about a few things."

An elusive figure walked the streets of Fontaine.
The city was lively as ever. Cafรฉ tables overflowed with conversation, newspapers exchanged quickly, and merchants called out to passing customers.
Only one topic seemed capable of competing with the afternoon bustle.
The Bernard murder.
"โฆDidn't she go by Maeve Laurent? Surgeon from Fontaine's Medical Hallโฆ"
"I heard she confessed."
"After what happened to her father? No wonder she killed him!"
"But that's just a rumor, we can't say for sure."
"You're right. Poor Hughie."
The figure continued walking.
Poor Hughie. Please. He deserved every bit of what happened.
Truthfully, Maeve Laurent had never been intended as a scapegoat.
She had appeared at precisely the right moment.
A stroke of luck.
And honestly that was way better.
They cast a glance at a newspaper kiosk. The headline was impossible to miss.
"HUGHIE BERNARD FOUND DEAD."
The figure almost laughed.
People mourned him now. If only they knew.
The memory returned to them.
It was not a very difficult thing to kill him. He was such a gullible person, so easily lured by a letter of good faith. And when he arrived - quizzically looking around the surroundings - they ambushed him. Pinned him to the ground. Unfortunately Hughie was not one to back down, so he tried to defend himself. But letโs be real, for how long could he do so?
Then came the flames. Honestly, it was purely accidental.
Hughie had recoiled immediately, instinctively trying to protect himself.
That had been the opening.
The syringe and every last drop of it being injected into his veins
The figure's fingers curled slightly.
They remembered Hughie's panic. Remembered him trying to scream.
Remembered the growing terror in his eyes as his body gradually ceased to obey him.
Most of all, they remembered the satisfaction.
At long last, Hughie Bernard had been forced to feel powerless.
The way they once had.
"Welcome to the Bertin's House of Curiosities. How can I help you?" the manager said. "Oh, it's you!"
The figure smiled. "Hello Mequignon. I have something for you today."
They produced a tiny container and placed it on the counter.
Mequignon picked it up curiously.
Condessence crystals lined its interior walls. Geo reinforced its exterior shell.
An unusual object.
"Interesting craftsmanshipโฆ" Mequignon remarked. "What is this?"
The figure merely smiled again. "A specialized capsule. How much do you think it's worth?"
"Yes," the figure thought as they walked away from the shop. "Now I really am untouchable." And so they were. After all, they had taken all the necessary steps to prevent any suspicion towards them. And it's not like anyone saw them, right?
"Wait."
They halted in their footsteps. Suddenly, horror struck them as they recalled one aspect of their getaway.
ย ย ย There was one other person that may have seen themโฆ
A/N: Mequignon is an Overworld NPC in Fontaine city!

Maeve sighed, taking off her gloves after finishing up a surgery. Two days had passed since the interrogation and there was no sign of the gardes. But the news of Hughieโs death had spread like a wildfire. Everyone now had something to say about that murder. She almost felt relieved that they didnโt find out about her past scandal with Hughie. Now she could go on and live peacefully like she was before.
Though, she couldnโt help but feel any remorse at his death at all.
โPerhapsโฆ it is good riddance,โ Maeve thought.
ย ย ย She frowned. Now she was thinking exactly like a murderer. Thank the Archons that there was no one to read her mind, or she would surely have been convicted there and then.
ย ย ย โDr. Laurent,โ a nurse approached Maeve. โThereโs people from Palais Mermonia at the reception, calling for you.โ
ย ย ย Maeveโs frown deepened. Just when she thought things were going good. โMe? Are you sure?โ she asked.
ย ย ย โYes. They request your presence immediately.โย
ย ย ย Maeve nodded stiffly and headed out โ her hand shaking. โItโs okay, Maeve โ have confidence,โ she tried reassuring herself. Reaching the reception, she spotted Captain Chevreuse with a couple more gardes.
ย ย ย โYes, Officer Chevreuse?โ Maeve said.
ย ย ย โDr Laurent,โ Chevreuse began. โNew evidence has been discovered. We would like you to testify for it.โ
The atmosphere in the hospital dropped to a pin-drop silence. All the people and staff there now had their eyes fixated on them. She could see โ no feel their watchful and critical eyes crawling up her back. But why were they calling her? Was it because she didnโt tell them about that incident?
ย ย ย Gasps and hushed whispers filled the room. โI see,โ said Maeve softly. โIโll come then.โ
ย ย ย Chevreuse nodded, her eyes stone cold. Maeve couldnโt read her. She wasnโt sure if Chevreuse suspected her to be the murderer or was she simply stern like that. Maeve wondered what โnew evidenceโ had been found that made them think so. Though, in the hearts of her heart she already knew the answer.
ย ย ย ย Stepping inside Palais Mermonia, her heart immediately filled with dread. There she spotted M. and Mme. Bernard next to the Iudex. She felt her blood leaving her face.
ย ย ย โYouโฆYou killed our son, you witch!โ Mme. Bernard screeched at her. โW-Why โ how could you?! Whatโs your deal with him?! Is there some sick pleasure you got from ruining his life?!โ
ย ย ย โW-What?!โ Maeve replied โ absolutely bewildered. โI did not kill your son; I have no idea what youโre talking about!โ
ย ย ย โOrder,โ Neuvillette began, tapping his cane. โEveryone, please calm down. Mme. Bernard please do not accuse this young lady as of yet. The investigation still persists.โ
ย ย ย โIt's true! I swear! I didnโt do anything!โ Maeve chimed.
Mme. Bernard shrank back to her seat with her equally furiously looking husband.
ย ย ย โThat weโll see,โ Chevreuse countered.

Some time agoโฆ
Among the pleasant breeze blowing over the fresh land of Poisson, Maeve Laurent strolled by, the cool weather soothing her strained nerves. It had been a rather stressful day for the surgeon; the patient she was to operate on had died just minutes before the operation. The patient's family had put up quite a row which had taken a while to calm them down.
She tossed her blonde head along with the wind, adjusting her hat while walking quietly along the green meadows. But her moment of peace was shattered in a blur, when she happened to spot a person lying, his body twitching and convulsing violently, and foaming just as aggressively from his mouth. Maeve let out a gasp at this sight and rushed towards the invalid.
She thought she might have heard a rustle of bushes as well, but there was no time to digress.
She recognized the person immediately. Hughie Bernard, another surgeon from the Fontaine Forensic & Medical Hall, hailing from an influential, rich family. "Oh, archons!" Maeve wailed. "What in Teyvat happened to him?!"
As she kneeled beside him, the convulsions came to an abrupt stop. She hurriedly checked the pulse but lack of sensation from the ends confirmed that he had succumbed to his ailing.
"He is dead?! H-How did this happen?" Maeve thought, panicking. That was when she spotted a syringe lying on the ground, leaking a curious liquid from its needle. She picked it up without a thought.
"An anaesthetic? Someone must have injected this in his veins!" she mused out loud to herself. She looked around helplessly to see if she could find anyone that could help carry him to the hospital. Suddenly, she saw a small figure of a melusine in the authoritative attire of the Marachausee Phantom with a badge with the name 'Tristane,' who blew a sharp whistle through her ears.
"Stop right there! May I know what's going on?" she questioned, pointedly.
"Officer Tristane, this man here just died! I think he has been jabbed by a syringe containing an anaesthetic!" Maeve replied.
Tristane's expression took a grave turn as she observed the pale body of the dead man. "Hmmโฆ" she mulled over the situation. "Step away from the crime scene, right now! Follow me, I'll call for reinforcements and you're coming with me to Palais Mermonia."

โAccording to the judgement of the Oratrice Mechanique DโAnalyse Cardinale, this case has been declared as a hung jury, as the evidence provided by either side is equally compelling, leading to a neutral conclusion,โ solemnly spoke the Supreme Judge, the Iudex: Neuvillette. Giving a bored sigh, the Hydro Archon, Focalors โ or Furina as she was more commonly known as โ slumped onto her throne in ennui.
ย ย ย Maeve sighed as she heard the judgeโs verdict. It settled uneasily in her chest โ neither condemning her nor evicting her from the crime. Her eyes met the sharp ones of the judge himself โ just for a second โ before he diverted his eyes to the shocked audience.
ย ย ย The detective, Ronnette, looking at the Oratrice in disdain, muttered to herself, โA hung jury is not enough! I should have found stronger evidence.โ
ย ย ย โAt leastโฆโ Maeve started helplessly. โAt least I am not a criminal.โ Then her expression changed, her brows furrowed with grief. โWhy did we end up like this?โ
