Burdock rifled through the plastic bag to see what they ended up acquiring from the Family Dollar. Blue hair dye, aggressively green hair dye, and then bleach. The blue was for Haymitch, the green for him. They’d gotten the idea on a whim and it was better than just doing nothing.

He sat up on the bathroom counter, finally taller than Haymitch for once in his life. He swung his legs idly, stopping and frowning slightly when he actually kicked a drawer with the back of his heel.

“How’re we gonna do this?” Burdock asked, tilting his head. “Like, are we gonna do your whole head?”

Haymitch unboxed the blue hair dye, grinning to himself. "Yeah, that's the plan. I doubt you'll be doing that, right? Just the ends?"

He took out the hairdye instructions, briefly skimmed over them, shrugged and tossed it behind him. "I've dyed Sid's hair before." He smirked at Burdock — an indicator he shouldn't be trusted — "So I'm basically a pro at this."

Haymitch took out the contents of both boxes. He put the mixture into the plastic bottle then shook it back and forth. He'd have to do this for a while before the dye reached the colour he wanted. Luckily for Haymitch, he wouldn't need to bleach his hair for this. He felt greatful that he wouldn't need to do such a thing, he was sure he'd make his hair fall out somehow.

Haymitch put the toilet seat down and sat on top of it. "It's gonna take a few minutes at the very least." He sighed. He had no paitence.

Burdock grinned as Haymitch did. It was almost infectious. “Don’t wanna ruin my whole head. At least with the ends I can cut it off it’s real bad. I saw what happened to Lenore Dove when we were in middle school and I helped her dye her hair. Was not good at all. Tam Amber had to make her nearly bald to make it look half-decent.” That was certainly a time. In 7th grade, Burdie and Lenore Dove had got their hands on some dye and bleach and completely disregarded the instructions and it ended up with Lenore Dove getting a really bad hair cut to get all the damaged parts off.

He snickered. “Yeah, I surely believe that,” he grinned up at Haymitch even harder. He continued swinging his legs, not at all considering anything that could go wrong.

“You’re lucky you’re blond-headed, we could dye your hair with Kool-Aid and I think we’d still get a sorta blue. But we gotta kill mine. Unfair, if you ask me,” he jokingly grumbled, shaking his head. He glanced back over at Haymitch. “Just a few minutes, we’ll be alright. More time to talk, I reckon.”

Haymitch gave Burdock a lousy shrug. "Some people got it more fair than others," he snickered to himself. "And you're not one of them. At least not when it comes to hair dye." He gestured towards the bottle, still shaking it. He paused to wonder if anything would go wrong when they dyed their hair... would he lose all his hair too? Like Lenore Dove? He didn't want that. Haymitch was sure his ma had dropped him as a baby --- even if it was unintentional of her. His curls made up for what he lacked: a round head.

He cleared his throat, leaning against the back of the toilet. "Come on, you don't trust me? I've listed my credentials and you're still being wary of me." He teased. Haymitch criss-crossed his legs and stared at the bottle. He quickly unscrewed the cap to take a peek inside. There it was, blue hair dye in all of its glory...

"You think so? I'd love to try dye my hair with kool-aid." He closed one eye, swirling the bottle around in his hand. "Should I shake it more? I want it to look good." He pondered. "And it's not called killing your hair if it's already dead, the only alive part are your roots." He playfully rolled his eyes.

“I like my hair!” He exclaimed. “Is that such a crazy thing?” He let out an exaggerated huff, “But fine, I guess I trust you.”

Burdock leaned over, trying to peer into the bottle, like how Haymitch was. He wanted to see the dye! He tried to achieve this by putting his elbows on his knees and craning his head. But, he leaned a little too far and almost fell, catching himself right at the last minute and with a little yelp. He pulled himself back up to the back of the counter— no risk of falling off now— and looked back over at Haymitch. “You’re the expert with all your credentials. How am I supposed to know if you shook it enough?”

“I dunno. I heard of people doing that somewhere,” he shrugged slightly. “Reckon it’d probably have to be pretty.. concentrated for it to stay for a while. Maybe we could try?” Burdock grinned. “But only after we do it this time around. Don’t think double-dying it’d be good for your hair. Probably smell weird too. Imagine the mix of hairdye and kool-aid.l

Haymitch playfully put his hands up. "I'm just kidding! Nothing wrong about loving your hair." He reached over, delicately grabbing at a strand of tucked hair from behind Burdock's ear. "You should keep taking care of it, looks nice. Feels even better." He let go of the strand and turned his attention back to the bottle. Feeling it was a good time to start the process, he hops off the toilet seat to stand in front of the mirror.

"Whoa! Don't fall! Wouldn't want you to break something. You know you're incredibly prone to that sort of thing, right?" Haymitch razzed. He gently nudged Burdock, signaling for him to shuffle over so he could get a better look at himself. He tried to push down his simmering feelings about how pretty Burdock looked at that angle. If only he'd grown taller than Haymitch... what a shame.

He tipped it over and began to dye his hair, hissing through his teeth as he poured it over his scalp. "Once I'm done mine," he tilted his head, trying to get a better view. "I'll bleach your ends 'nd help you with the dye."

He glanced over at Burdock, flashing a grin. "We're gonna look so cool."

Burdock leaned into Haymitch’s touch against his hair. He would probably admit he was very fond of this at some point to Haymitch, but that was not right now. He smiled what he thought was a little bit, but he was actually beaming at the compliment. “Thank you, Hay!”

“Oh, be quiet,” he half-grumbled as he pushed himself farther up on the counter. No way to fall now. “That was one time!” He paused for a few seconds, thinking, “Okay, maybe a few but that doesn’t mean anything. Everyone breaks things at some point.” Despite his endless efforts of defending himself, he stopped and scooted over when Haymitch asked him to. He got an even better view of Haymitch from there and couldn’t help but think about how pretty he was. Haymitch was just as handsome no matter if Burdie was taller than him or not.

He grinned at Haymitch as he watched him pour the dye over his head. But as he saw him tilting around, he piped up: “You want me to help? I can if you want.” Before Haymitch could even answer, Burdock climbed down from the counter and stood beside him. He would be nearly no help from here. Damn being short.

When Haymitch was concentrated, he would stick out his tongue. That's what he was doing— focusing. The starchy gloves got in the way, rubbing against itself as he applied the dye. Annoyed by this, Haymitch set the brush down into the dye and slipped off his gloves. So what if it dyed his hands?

"And," he reffered back to their previous conversation, "it is true that people break things, but you've really got a knack for it. We're talking, what? Several fractures?" He glanced at Burdie. "Do you have any long-term problems?"

Burdock stood up onto his tiptoes to at least kind of see the top of Haymitch’s head. “Yeah, you’re the professional here. Fifty billion years of experience and you don’t even let me help,” he huffed, not being serious in the slightest. He crossed his arms and rolled his eyes. “Wow, I see how it is.”

He pulled himself back up onto the counter, swinging his legs off the edge now. He couldn’t help but watch Haymitch. He’d seen him do the concentration thing plenty of times before, but he’d never really focused on it. It was admittedly kind of cute though. Burdock probably wouldn’t admit that though. But he wasn’t entirely sure.

He huffed, bringing his knees to his chest. He glanced up at the ceiling though. “Four times, I reckon. Ain’t too many. And anyway, you’re just saying that ‘cos you’ve never broke anything. I don’t think. Have you?”

Haymitch cocked his head, he hadn't realized he was sticking out his tongue. He briefly paused before putting it away. That was weird. Somehow, Haymitch had stained his teeth with the dye and hadn't noticed. He flashed Burdock a toothy grin.

"Nope. Not a single broken bone in my whole life! One of us drank his milk growing up," he flicked Burdocks nose with a finger, "and it wasn't me," he mocked.

There was something heavy behind Burdock's gaze. He could feel it even if he wasn't paying attention to him. It made uneasy, well, not really... but he couldn't come up with a better word for it. He almost felt... flustered? That was a stupid word. But Haymitch could feel the tips of his ears getting warmer and he could only be thankful the dye was already getting everywhere and providing a cover-up.

Maybe it was from concussion he got a few days ago. He wouldn't admit it but Haymitch was equally prone to head injuries as Burdock was to breaking his arms.

Burdock grinned back, nearly giggling now. It was so hard to be nonchalant ever for him (since he was so extremely chalant), but it was especially hard around Haymitch. Just being around him nearly made him giddy. He hadn’t exactly said anything about it but he assumed Haymitch and everyone else had no clue about his very tiny crush. Well, they would have no clue if they were lacking all of their senses, anyway.

“I drank milk! That’s how I can climb up shit real fast. And anyway, I only break stuff when I’m bein’ real dumb and I—” he paused and felt his face get hot and a stupid smile forming when Haymitch touched him. He knew he didn’t go red or anything, but he still felt warm and giddy now.

He shifted to put his legs under him and sit crisscross on the counter. “Well, I think you hit your head as much as I break stuff. Even more probably. But I guess you gotta trade somethin’ off if you’re so good at everything else.”

"Whatever—" Haymitch rolled his eyes and playfully scoffed. Haymitch knew he was in no position to be making fun of Burdock when he himself was so susceptible to injuries of his own. It was hypocritical and Haymitch knew it. But he really couldn't help it, he enjoyed making fun of Burdock whenever he could.

"No you didn't. 'Else you'd be strong too. You can only climb so fast because you grew up in the forests. Practically born in the trees!" He exclaimed, laughing. "Pssht, besides. My concussions got nothin' to do with this conversation." He stuck out his blue tongue.

Haymitch applied the rest of the dye on his head, making sure to spread it evenly across. It looked pretty good! All he had to do now was to wait and rinse. In the mean time, he could work on Burdock's hair. "Hey, ready for the bleach?"

“I’m plenty strong!” He fake-huffed, crossing his arms. “I wouldn’t be able to climb if I wasn’t strong. And the woods are better than out here! Believe me—” Burdie’s face fell a little bit at the concussions mention. “How many times you done that?”

“Looks real even,” Burdock chimed in, leaning on his arm propped up on his knee now. He sat up straighter at the mention of the bleach. “Ready when you are. Do we just gotta.. put it on?”
