No because I’m sick of it. Everyone at my school assumes I’m a lesbian because I’m a fem-presenting person who wears button downs and has short hair. When did dressing masc make me a lesbian? While lesbians are peak obviously I just don’t like people assuming my sexuality just because of the way I dress, especially when they’re wrong.

And even when I have to do the whole ‘I’m bi actually’ the amount of people who don’t believe me is ridiculous. Because they’re willing to accept the fact that I like women but the fact that I might not fit into the mental box that they have shoved me into in their head? That is where they draw the line. Why is my sexuality where you draw the line?

I shouldn’t have to do the whole ‘I’m bi actually’ thing at all. It is no one’s place to assume anyone’s gender, sexuality, or any other part of their identity. It’s not your business. It’s not a fact until they confirm it.

I used to dress the way I was expected to. Even when the scratchy clothing made me uncomfortable, even when my long hair always made me hot and was a pain to take care of. But back then I was perceived as someone who was ‘capable’ of liking men. Cause yeah. Apparently long hair and a skirt is the definition of a straight girl.

Fuck off.

I am a teenager. I should be allowed to express myself without people making assumptions and generalisations about who I am.

So yeah. Fem women can like girls and masc women can like guys. Fucking news headline for you.

This doesn’t just apply to women. It applies to all genders, to all people who have had a part of their identity assumed because of the way they looked. It’s not just about queerness. It’s about how eager society is to shove all of us into boxes.
