Beyond the Lines of Fonda 1
Poems and other pigments of literature are eyepieces to better see the real situation in the society in a creative variety of colors and figures. Marion B. Guerreroâs poem titled âFonda 1â is a native literary work in Mindanao written originally in Chavacano that superficially talks about a âFondaâ or a feast in a small barrio, but it actually transcends to a more profound reality in the youth today. This poem conceptualized in Zamboanga deals about a celebration in which lads and ladies interact with each other amidst the emotional attraction and hormonal vulnerabilities and urges. Guerrero uses metaphors, symbolism, and colorful imagery to illustrate how the youth of today is more susceptible to negative tugs in their feelings that consequently result to their future being compromized. The author incorporated the witty use of rhetoric as well as the use of imaginative language to cater a vivid poem to the youth readers.
Technically, there were three points that support the main idea of the poem. One point that solidifies this claim is the recurring references to teenage romance and premarital relationship. Another point in the poem that ties back to its message is the underlying response of the society with regards to premarital relationships. Lastly, the authorâs use of literary devices and adherence to poetic structure contributed to the overall message of the poem.
Guerreroâs work implicitly tackled about the recurring idea of how the youth should not succumb to the irrational call of feelings and shallow perception of love. This was a point highlighted by the phrase âwishing that nine months after the baptism, they should not be celebratingâ. This evidently showed teenage parenthood. There was also a phrase suggesting teenage marriage and the Filipino concept of âpagtatananâ in the last line of the poem. Moreover, the theme in the poem denotes the social reality of how the youth is exposed to the concepts of marriage and family in a young and inappropriate age. Subsequently, these issues evoke a response from the society and elders.
In the literary work, the highlighted issues were the youthâs careless acts of prioritizing their feelings over more important matters such as preparedness, stability of their future, and security in their choices. The poem talks about how young boys and girls engage in premarital activity which leads to the various conflicts that the society suffers in the present. The poemâs purpose was unfolded in the lines âGrandmotherâs advice, donât stay out late, In the dance your feelings donât demonstrateâ. This tells us that we should be wary not to let our emotions get the best of our decisions. The poem aims to warn us about how teenage relationships with a faulty foundation could result to undesirable consequences. Rampant teenage pregnancy, premarital intercourse, and the lack of sex and family education are the problems in the Philippine society that the poem reflected. These issues are prevalent nowadays targeting the youth and their family, more importantly the society. The burden goes to the youthâs parents and society as instead of focusing on their future, the youth are predisposed to do adult and parental duties. The future of the youth and the society is at stake. Instead of striving for education that will lead to a progressive social status, the youth is pushed to work hard for their unplanned familyâs needs. According to the poem, such issues hinder progress and creates a turmoil of inter-generational poverty.
The total structure of the poem such as the use literary devices contributed to the poemâs entire idea. These devices added color and emphasis on the theme of teenage parenthood and relationship by evoking strong emotions and giving colorful inventiveness on the poemâs lines and stanzas.
In the end of the day, Marion B. Guerreroâs âFonda 1â strives to narrate a warning and an advice to the youth that they should not allow their emotions and feelings overdrive the validity of their choices. The youth should be mindful with what the elders are telling them. We have to recalibrate our actions and rethink our perceptions with regards to teenage relationships. After all, as Rizal stated, âAng kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan,â but with whatâs happening, are they still the hope of the fatherland?
