After losing his parents in a flood, 15-year-old Andy is forced to live in the Mountain Province with his estranged grandfather. Feeling they've lost everything, the two embark on a journey and start to come to terms with their grief.

"To his credit, Diokno never stoops to caricature or cliché as he highlights the differences between young and old, city and country, modernity and tradition. Instead, he unceasingly celebrates the ravishing beauty of the rural Philippines. Shot at Mount Pulag National Park on the island of Luzon, Above the Clouds provides stunning settings for both Andy and the grandfather to release and resolve their internal turmoil. Carlo Mendoza's camerawork provides a stirring survey of the landscape, while deftly highlighting the characters' relationship to all this nature, while Johann Mendoza's music also helps heighten the drama within.

We all know him as a Pinoy rock legend, but to us, he's a caring grandfafther, a genuine and funny person, a very talented actor. Rock and roll, Piyaps! At the closing ceremonies of the 25th Singapore International Film Festival last Saturday: Pepe Diokno, Ruru Madrid, producer Bianca Balbuena, and one of our most valuable crew members, Malaysian filmmaker Bradley Liew! Brad won the Most Promising Project award for his film-in-development, "Singing in Graveyards," which shall star Pepe Smith!
It was a packed house in Singapore last night! Very interesting Q&A, too. Thank you so much to the Filipinos, the very warm Singaporean audience, the cinephiles (Pierre Rissient, Wang Xiaoshuai, Huang Lu, Kelvin Tong, Kongdej Jaturanrasamee, Bee Thiam, Wan Ping, Woo Ming Jin, Lee Chatametikool, Leon Cheo, Fran Borgia, Bradley Liew, etc) who came to see our film at the Singapore International Film Festival.
Happy 17th birthday to one of the most talented young actors we know, Ruru Madrid! He was only 15 when we started shooting the film, and it's been a pleasure to see him grow. Meet Ruru in Singapore next week at our screening!

Pepe Diokno writes about our experience in The Philippine STAR: "Our screenings took place at Toho Cinemas in the posh complex of Roppongi Hills, and they came with a series of pleasant surprises. The first surprise was that our screenings had sold out days before, with hundreds of people snapping up pricey tickets in advance. The second surprise was that while most of the audience was Japanese, a good number was Filipino: OFWs who came from across town and even skipped work. "Ruru Madrid and Pepe Smith arrived in Tokyo on Oct. 27, in time for the film’s world premiere. It was also their first time to see the film from the audience’s point of view.
"Most of the viewers stayed behind at the Toho Roppongi Hills Cinema 6 after the screening and participated in the open forum.
"A Japanese cineaste asked the actors if the 'generation gap' made things difficult for them to relate with each other. Madrid said Smith was 'like my real grandfather on the set.' Smith agreed: 'Ruru looks like my son!' Pepe Diokno described the 66-year-old rocker as 'a child at heart … very playful off-cam.'
"Throughout the forum, Smith cracked jokes. Kenji Ishizaka, Asian Future programming director, asked if it was all right to introduce him as the 'Mick Jagger of the Philippines.'
To which Smith quipped, 'It’s okay! Mick is the Pepe Smith of England.'"
Hi everyone! I’d like to share with you the first three stills from my film, “Above the Clouds,” which is premiering this week at the Tokyo International Film Festival. I’m getting so nervous. Screening your film for the very first time is maybe like seeing your baby walk for the first time — you can only hold your breath, hope that it finds its bearings, and watch as it grows into a life of its own. Making this film has been such a tough journey (I talk about this in an interview in the Inquirer); distributing the film is another journey itself. I’m so proud of this movie and I can’t wait to be able to screen it for all of you.

Finally, after eight months on hiatus because of money matters, we’re back shooting Above the Clouds. Struggled through a 25-hour shoot this Tuesday with the most uncooperative weather, but I was happy to see the cast and crew back together. Just a few more shooting days this month and next month, and we’ll finally be able to wrap up production. But these involve the most difficult sequences of the film, and the most challenging work of my life so far. But again, finally. It’s been a year since we started pre-production and two years three years since I started writing the film. Almost there. Almost there.
