What is the Not-So-Mini-Print Exhibition & Exchange?
Each year, the Artist Proof Gallery holds a non-juried show and sale to showcase the work of Alberta print artists, and to raise funds towards A/P’s artistic and educational programming.
For this year’s show, A/P is inviting all interested printmakers to submit and edition of twelve 15” x 11” prints for exhibition and exchange in the Artist Proof Gallery. Each participant will receive 10 prints created by other artists, and A/P will retain 2 works from each edition for sale in our studio and gallery. A/P will retain all proceeds from the first two prints, the artist will receive 60% of the proceeds of the third and subsequent sales and will receive one less print in the exchange package.
The exhibition will run from Nov. 28 to Dec. 22, with an opening reception and print exchange to be held on Friday, Nov 30, 2012 from 6:30 to 8:30pm.
Check out the submission requirements, and our Call to Artists for the November 23rd 2012 deadline, on our website www.albertaprintmakers.ca
My submission is called "The Shadow" and is a two-plate woodcut printed with AKUA inks on Rives light weight paper. I developed the image from a photograph of myself reflected in a store window of stacked bolts of cloth. My reflection looks like a shadow against the patterned material. I tried printing the decorative block with several colours to mimic the photograph but it became too busy once the figure was printed on top. Simplifying the colour seemed to bring it all together.

"FOUR DIRECTIONS" by Carole Bondaroff
My "Etching with Chine Collé" was created at Atelier de L'Ile, Val David, Québec, last August, 2012. I have spent one month each summer at this wonderful, cooperative printmaking studio in the Laurentians for the past seven years. I truly enjoy this "non-toxic" facility as well as the group interaction with French as well as international artists.
This edition is comprised of four mini zinc plates which I etched in a non-toxic, electo-etch, in a vertical submersion bath of sodium sulphate. I hand-wiped (a la poupée) each of the 4 plates and applied Japanese rice paper with rice paste (chine collé) and printed this four-square image on Arches paper, using their Brand press, in the heat of the Québec summer nights.
I have entitled the image: "Four Directions" as a tribute to Alberta's many anniversaries this year. (Stampede, Parks Canada, Calgary Library, my house, etc.) The four mountain areas featured are: Castle Mountain, Rundle Mountain, Lake Moraine, and Lake Louise.

Not-So-Mini-Print Submission by Julie Macbean Available for public sale on Friday November 30th 2012, 6:30-8:30 pm Alberta Printmakers’ Society & Artist Proof Gallery (A/P) 2010F 11 Street SE Calgary, Alberta, Canada
About This Not-So-Mini-2012 Print by Julie Macbean
My work is concerned with creating a poetic space that conveys a numinous atmosphere of both an absence and a presence.
An empty chair is a metaphor that suggests a loss or an absence. When a loved one dies, their personal belongings take on a heightened significance for those they left behind. For them an empty chair has a presence, a sense of life of those who have sat there before.
